Game Trading An Addiction or Resist

So this logo is evil for a family man like myself who doesnt have alot of cash to buy games, then this game releases that you have been waiting all year for and then you find yourself at your local GameStop etc trading 10 games to buy one and if your not careful you will sitting there with half your collection thinking what the hell was i thinking.

Beleive it or not it can become an addiction and can damage your game collection big time, were all guilty of doing it some more then others but at the time your doing it your not really thinking about all the money time and searching yoi did for the games you traded. I personally have learned not to do this any more and although its tough for a guy like me with four kids and very little budget for games my prioritys change daily when it comes to my games. Matter of fact just recently have i wised up and decided hey it took me a while to get my games as big as it is and i assure you it will get bigger not smaller in the years to come.

And you see these adds talking about so much off with trades etc, but one good thing may come out of the next gen systems and that is trading in games will be a thing of the past, which for someone like me is a good thing, cause when that awesome new game comes out that i want, instead of grabbing 10 of my games and running to gamestop to trade in for the game that temptation wont be there allowing me to keep my games which i should have done in the first place, its really hard you all, i have a big family and im the sole provider of my family so getting that new game is hard to do, so deals like gamestop, buy back etc is my evil, and like i said just recently have i decided that no matter what game releases or how bad i want that new release i will not trade my hard earned games, after all some of them although may be released on the 360 are still hard to find especially in the great condition i buy.

Me too. I think one time I traded in almost my entire collection. I bought a lot of that stuff back again, so I try to resist the urge now.

You're stuck in a bad position.  I'll try to explain.  Your desire to build a game collection is at odds with your desire to play new releases.  If you don't have the money to do the latter, you have to eat away at your game collection to buy new games.  Yet, you seem to be far more interested in playing new games over the games you already own.  Of the games you've traded in - say from the PS1, PS2, and 360 - how many of them did you play through?  If you did play through most of them, and you felt that you got as much as you could out of them, then it makes sense to convert them into something new.  Yet, if most of the games were unplayed/unfinished, perhaps you didn't need them in the first place.

Of course, the flipside to all of this is that the new releases are too much of a distraction, and they are drawing focus away from your collection.  I mean, you did buy these games for a reason, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't to resell them (especially to GameStop).  According to your Backloggery page, you have over 100 PS2 and 360 that you've marked as unfinished.  That's a great deal of games to work through, so perhaps it's time to start playing them.  As you do that, you could create a game budget to figure out how and when to get the new releases that catch your eye (without using your games as currency).

Still, this isn't an easy problem to sort out.  Time is the main resource being spent here, and it's your decision to use it towards past or present releases.

lol no it was a problem im not trading games period heres an example i saw Knights of the Old Republic II the  Sith Lord my first reaction was i gotta have it and was going to trade for then i started thinking kinda like what you just said why trade a game i bought unless i really didnt want it to begin with so with that said im proud to say i did not trade and that same day i did a brake job that paid just enough for the $32 dallar game but im proud of myself cause the only game i traded was Tiger woods 14 and first i got it free and second its a sports game wich i dont keep anyway.

I actually never had this problem. I tried trading in Luigi's Mansion shortly after its release cause I'd beaten it, and they were only going to give me $10. No thanks. That's honestly the only trade-in deal I remember having, and it did not go through.

Be glad cause all you do is turn a $40 game into a $10 trade in lol!!!

I use to do but now I keep my games. I only trade or sell them if I know I wont touch them. If I cant afford a game with the money I have then oh well Ill just have to wait on it. I personally like the Gamestops close to me. They have helpful friendly staff working at them that know me as a regular shopper there.

I don't trade it my games.  You can count the number of games I've traded in on one hand.  My problem is buying games and when I see GS' buy 2 get 1 free sales I lose my mind.  It's a good they there hasn't been one in a while.  I've been asking around and my friends that work at GS don't know when another one will come up.  I'm hoping there's a sale for father's day.  There are at least 6 games I would like to get on the sale.

I used to do the buy 2-get-1 free sales all the time. Now that I've put my game spending into my budget, I've tended to save up for new titles and only buy very specific used ones. No more impulse buying for me I'm afraid.

yea Im more selective of my games now although if i have five or six bucks sometimes i will go buy an old xbox 360 game in hopes that i missed a good one.

I love buying the old 360 games and trying all sorts of genre's I don't normally play. Thing is, I'm finding less and less time to keep up with the new stuff, so I'm trying to resist the retro urge right now.

I have the same problem.  By the time I get to the new stuff, it's retro. Laughing

I haven't been in a Gamestop since 2007. It's a good thing there are other video-game retailer choices in my area (like Game-Xchange), otherwise I'd do everything through the Internet.

Any games that I've ever traded in the past where ones I were sure/satisified that I played through enough to never use them again or titles that I knew would be easy/cheap to buy again if I was inclined. Truth be told, I do this more with movies (and the titles I trade in are ones that I plan to upgrade to their blu-ray version).

I was guilty of this for a long time. But hearing your thoughts on it changed my tune. I grew tired of buying back games I'd traded at a higher price than I paid before. Now I simply wait for new ones til I have enough cash at payday. It's just not worth it anymore because Vintage Stock really screws you on exchanges with games.
