Trine 2: Director's Cut (WiiU) - A fantasy platformer on a little screen

Cooperative gameplay without being on-line. I don't know why I've never purchased Trine 2 or Trine for that matter. It has a fantasy theme. It's puzzly. It's visually appealing. It's nice and short. It has all the elements that appeal to me.  It's on the WiiU eShop and playable on the handy gamepad, and there's a demo available too.

Off-TV play is such a luxury. I plugged in my headphones into the WiiU gamepad and tried out the demo for Trine 2 recently and I was very impressed with the experience. I played marioU and nintendo land which have their own quirky uses for the gamepad, however Trine wasn't designed with the gampad in mind but I'm still surprised with the way it was implemented with the hardware technology.

The game starts off with a story book which is being narrated on the screen. It's a nice feeling to have an open book on the gamepad. Through out the game you are swapping out between a Mage, Ranger and Knight using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and attack enemies to proceed across the 2D platformer. The mage can levitate objects by simply tapping and holding the screen and draggin the object where ever you like, or draw a box and one wil apparate so you can reach a ledge. The ranger has a bow and arrow, also a grappling hook, so you tap a ledge and she'll cling on and you can swing across platforms, over pits for example, or just press and hold her bow and arrow and arch in an angle to shoot enemies. The knight can defend with his shield when you tap and hold the character on the screen.

The game makes very clever use of the game pad screen to make the game interesting. Some screen touch controls don't work so great though. I'd still prefer to use the controller, but the mage has the best use of this screen tapping.

I enjoyed the demo enough to purchase it. I think it looks better on the gamepad than on the TV. Not to say that the TV graphics look bad at all, I just prefer the visuals on the gamepad. I like playing it off-screen and I think the puzzles are fun. I was very surprised with the title.

I'm actually not surprised that the small screen looks better than the TV, I've watched movies on my tiny Android and said "holy shit, so this is what HD looks like!" Yeah, we still have SDTVs, but even still, it's quite incredible.

And those screen shots look great as well. Co-op sounds interesting.

Coop is interesting and "switches" up the gameplay to keep it from getting boring. Looks good too.

I have had my eye on Trine for awhile now! I played the PSN demo for Trine 2 and thought it was great. The only thing I'm waiting for is physical copy of the games. Someone please make that happen.

I DL from WiiU eShop. I don't think there is a physical copy available. Maybe for PC on amazon. I don't know.

"you can play this on the gamepad?"

That's what I said when I first heard about it. It's a really nice platformer second to maybe MarioU at the moment. Since Rayman is delayed...

I really enjoyed this game (see: review). I have yet to kick it back on to check out the updated graphics that FrozenByte recently released. Really, I thought the stuff from the Goblin Menace DLC really made this game. Those levels were so inventive and interesting they really surpassed everything done in the core experience.

It's going to be hard to play the first game now on the PC without the GamePad. That really made the game a completely different experience. It's practically made for it.

The reason I played it this time was because it's available as a free DL from the eShop and it's on sale for 15 dollars. I feel like the gampad gameplay, away from TV made it special along with the touch screen control. I don't feel like playing it on PC really.

I bought the original Trine 2 from Xbox Live and then PSN+ plus gave it to me for free. So I have it in two places and haven't played it in either unless you call 10 minutes playing. LOL

The gamepad game play was a big draw for me.

Still want to play Trine 2. I'll probably purchase it off Steam! Hopefully it has controller support.

Why don't you just download from Xbox Live if you want controller support?

I still have to beat the first Trine but I have the second one purchased already during the Steam sale. It's something I plan to pick up again soon.

I think the game is neat no matter what choice of platform. It's very unique and clever. It's good. However, I read that Trine 2 had an update that made it really great.
