Cooperative gameplay without being on-line. I don't know why I've never purchased Trine 2 or Trine for that matter. It has a fantasy theme. It's puzzly. It's visually appealing. It's nice and short. It has all the elements that appeal to me. It's on the WiiU eShop and playable on the handy gamepad, and there's a demo available too.
Off-TV play is such a luxury. I plugged in my headphones into the WiiU gamepad and tried out the demo for Trine 2 recently and I was very impressed with the experience. I played marioU and nintendo land which have their own quirky uses for the gamepad, however Trine wasn't designed with the gampad in mind but I'm still surprised with the way it was implemented with the hardware technology.
The game starts off with a story book which is being narrated on the screen. It's a nice feeling to have an open book on the gamepad. Through out the game you are swapping out between a Mage, Ranger and Knight using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and attack enemies to proceed across the 2D platformer. The mage can levitate objects by simply tapping and holding the screen and draggin the object where ever you like, or draw a box and one wil apparate so you can reach a ledge. The ranger has a bow and arrow, also a grappling hook, so you tap a ledge and she'll cling on and you can swing across platforms, over pits for example, or just press and hold her bow and arrow and arch in an angle to shoot enemies. The knight can defend with his shield when you tap and hold the character on the screen.
The game makes very clever use of the game pad screen to make the game interesting. Some screen touch controls don't work so great though. I'd still prefer to use the controller, but the mage has the best use of this screen tapping.
I enjoyed the demo enough to purchase it. I think it looks better on the gamepad than on the TV. Not to say that the TV graphics look bad at all, I just prefer the visuals on the gamepad. I like playing it off-screen and I think the puzzles are fun. I was very surprised with the title.
