Tomb Raider 2013

At announcement, my interest in the Tomb Raider reboot was about a 2 on a scale of 10. Couldn't put my finger on it, but something about the Tomb Raider series never really appealed to me. Well, now that's all in the past.

It started a few years back, about 2001. My uncle was playing for the first time what I would eventually come to acknowledge as the second iteration in the Tomb Raider series, aptly named Tomb Raider II. (Originally released in 1997). My intial thought was, "why isn't there any music?...." And "why is this old guy following her around?" Naturally, all this was taking place at Lara's tutorial-like mansion, and that old guy? Winston. Her butler. But being about six years old, I knew none of this. The thought of this old guy following her around with nothing but the eerie sound of cups rattling was quite frankly, a little disturbing. The humor was completely lost on me, and I was thoroughly creeped out. Therefore I returned to my aunt's side to continue watching her play Final Fantasy X.

No wonder people always wanna lock this guy in the freezer...

Fast forward a little over 10 years later, and I couldn't be more excited for the newest Tomb Raider game.

I hadn't been tracking the progress of this game until very recently. 5 days ago to be exact. Since then I've watched every trailer, gameplay demonstration, and preview. I've even managed to secure $60 from a friend (aka ex-boyfriend who owes me big time) so I can procure the game on launch day. (March 5th)

The reviews are starting to trickle in and I'm glad to see it's doing well so far. Can't wait.

I'm in the same boat as you, Tomb Raider just hasn't appealled to me until now. This game looks as if it's going to take a woman and release her inner survival instincts.

Yup. It's pretty brutal. I literally cringed when in one of the trailers she fell from a high height and landed right on a sharpened bone from a human skeleton. Or when she got her foot caught in a bear trap. Or many of the other horrifying situations she seems to end up in haha

I hope this game is good. Lara Croft was like Mario for me. I sort of got back into gaming with Tomb Raider series after Mario. I've played all the tomb raiders, I have the HD collection for PS3. I really want this to be successful.Cool

Hmm...I might have to invest in this HD collection you speak of

The controls for lara are much better in the HD collection than the old school. Much easier to play. Even the swimming parts are fun. I recommend. Might be on sale.Cool

And I'd like to add that Tomb Raider Underworld was an underrated gem. Gorgeous graphics and I really dig the Norse mythology at the core of the story.

Agree with this.Laughing

those original tomb raiders were nuts. I had a friend who got obsessed with them.  He quit playing video games though because he was too compulsive about it.

I don't know about the new one. IT looks fun, but $60 is a lot of money.  I will probably wait.

My uncle played them all pretty compulsively for a while, and I could never really understand why.

I thought about waiting, what with all the other March releases coming up, but I just can't help myself!

That butler in the mansion used to drive me nuts.   I could never get used to him following me around, even if it was supposed to be humorous.

Even now I still can't find the humor in that. Maybe I'm just scarred, but I still find it highly disturbing. And the fact that there was no music to speak of just made it worse. I always get a little uneasy when all I can hear is the character's footsteps and/or random sound effects. It's eerie.

One of my most anticipated games of the year. Pity I can't afford it. Undecided

Funny story-the woman who owned the indie game store I worked at loved Tomb Raider. I remember when TR 2 came out and she was trying it out in the store, just running around the mansion. She rounded a corner and ran into the butler, and jumped in alarm. She later said that moment was scarier than Resident Evil.

Hahahaha it really is creepy!

You had to know the reviews were going to be positive considering the game is a week from launch.  I'm interested, but I'm not positive that I'm buying it yet.  Maybe just a rental.

From what I've seen, it's a pretty "rentable" game, because you'll see everything you need to know in a short while

I got a chance to try the game at NYCC. Unfortunately, the demo was in Alpha and it ran kind of below par, which put me on the fence with this one. Looks like they fixed it up a lot though, and I'm pretty excited to give this one a try. Hopefully its good.

GamerGirlBritt

I was on the fence without having played any type of demo, so I can't say you're unjustified there. We'll just have to see

I have to admit not liking the original. The camera movement made me incredibly nauseous and all I could think about when I looked at Lara was "why don't her boobs give her a black eye when she runs?" and "I didn't know they made sports bras in that size!"

That said, I'm looking forward to the upcoming game, although I'm going to have to wait to buy it until I have some money coming in again.

Haha I'm glad to see she's more realistically portrayed here.

I'm curious as to the length of it. I doubt i'll pounce for $60 but $40 I would do. I pumped a lot of hours into Tomb Raider 3 back in the day. That game was tough

GamerGirlBritt

I've heard 10 to 15 hours, without all the collectibles and side stuff

So happy to hear this game turned out well, it had me worried for a bit. It's something I'll eventually pick up, but not right away as I have plenty to keep me busy

I hear ya. My backlog is getting harder and harder to keep up with lol

Uh oh, what'd the ex do? lol

And I never once played a Tomb Raider game, but this new one looks awesome.

Ohhh it's a longgg story. And not one which bears repeating. Just know, he's a douche, and I hate him hahaha

I want Tomb-raider badly but it's hard for me to get games at $60.00 a pop sometimes. I'm not saying it's not worth it, just that I'm broke. lol.

I remember this game came under a lot of controversy for silly nonsensical reasons so I'm glad it's now doing well in spite of that.

I am actually looking forward to this game. As most people probably have mentioned I never was a tomb Raider fan during the first games, yet this one is certainly appealing. I was excited about it when they showed it during E3. Can't wait to eventually play it!

I've never been big into Tomb Raider, but my brother in law was. Of course, he's one of those die-hard purists, so he won't touch the new one with a 50 foot pole...

Conversely, the new Tiomb Raider looks neat to me, so who knows? Maybe I'll check it out...

I haven't played through any of the Tomb Raider games.  I did play the demo of TR II back in the PlayStation days.  I liked it, but I never got into the series beyond that.  The new Tomb Raider seems to explore just how much physical abuse from the elements she can endure.  Also seems to enjoy showing how much pain she can inflict on men.  Interesting.

I just picked it up at GameStop a few hours ago. Played the first 45 minutes and it is spectacular! Action packed and exciting with very fluid controls. Lara is reborn and it starts right now.
