contemplating a 2DS...

Plenty of people see entirely different things when they look at the 2DS. Some see a headache filled holiday season. Some see a questionable business move. Some see an ugly hunk of plastic. Some see a beautiful hunk of plastic. I see an ecstatic 7 year old.
Over the past week I have been tossing around the idea of getting a 2DS for my godson, Andrew. This is a new idea that only surfaced when the 2DS was announced. I was never planning or even thinking about getting him videogames for his birthday or Christmas. Now I am contemplating it... What changed? The price is definitely a part of it. A $40 price difference is pretty significant. Especially since that money can go right into getting a game or two. The last thing you want is new tech and nothing to play with it. The ugly design is definitely another big factor. A lot of the things that were cut, or changed for the 2DS will not matter to him. He will be super excited with just having the device. From everything that I have read, the 2DS is built very solid and should take a beating. Why are people worried about the fact that the 2DS does not close shut? Plenty of toys and gadgets have not had the ability to close shut, but are still around and kicking. I for one still have a bunch of different gameboys lying around that all work, assuming that I have batteries.
I think that he would love having a handheld console, and I apparently am too cheap to get him a proper 3DS. I just think that the 2DS is a little bit more practical. He is child number 3 of 4, and I can somewhat relate to his place in the family. There were just a few more in my family, I was 4 or 7. With an older brother he gets quite a few things second hand and he somewhat lives in a shadow. I think that the 2DS would be an awesome way to get out from that shadow and have the coolest toy(s) in the house.

In other news, I finished two amazing games, Fire Emblem Awakening and Steamworld Dig. I am currently working my way through Link's Awakening and hope to actually finish it this time. My mind is becoming muddled with many thoughts, so I best walk away from the computer for now...

I am seriously thinking about buying a 2DS for myself. I can't see the 3D effects due to vision issues and as a frugal yankee born and bred, I just couldn't bring myself to buy something that had a feature I can't use as a major selling point. I think your godson will be very happy to have something cool that his older siblings haven't had first. Everybody deserves to be first for something.

I am definitely glad that I got an XL, but I am sure that I would have gotten a 2DS if it had been an option.

How old is your godson?  If he's really young, I'd recommend a LeapFrog device over a 2DS.

But if I didn't already hae a 3DS, I'd get a 2DS right away myself since I've been blind in my left eye since birth and can't see the 3D effects.

Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game.

He will be 7.  I believe that his family already has a couple of the leapfrogs lying about.  I may end up holding off and get him one next year.

A Link to the Past is my favourite Zelda, but Link's Awakening is currently tied with the Oracle games for 2nd.

I think that sounds like a pretty sweet idea, though that's still quite the present. I think the 2DS would definitely be up to the beating any kid would give it. Also, Link's Awakening is great Smile

The one thing that I just thought about.  I think that he would definitely treat it as a treasure, and nobody goes around destroying a treasured possession.

Sounds like a great idea. I mean folding Nintendo handhelds didn't come along until the GBA SP did they? I want an XL but I don't really use the 3D so is the 70 buck difference worth it?

I could care less about 3D but I am a fan of the size of the XL.  Being an adult, I think that the XL is great.

Oh is the 2DS a small screen too? I haven't been paying that much attention. If it is I'm holding out until I  can get an XL

It has the same screens as the original 3DS

I heard Steamworld Dig is awesome!

Awesome is an understatement.  I think that they did a wonderful job on the exploration aspect of the game.  I could not stop digging deeper into the mine.

Honestly, if it weren't so frivilous an expense for me right now, I'd consider a 2DS as well.

Despite already having a 3DS, I don't have any problem with the 2DS, so as long as Nintendo doesn't discontinue the 3DS, and like you said, it's great for kids. Oh, and wherever there's anyone saying that the 2DS doesn't close shut, remind them that so didn't the original GameBoy and the PSP and Vita too.

If you go with it let us know. I'm curious to hear if indeed that age range is interested in the 2DS. My "Little One" is a bit too old for that kind of model.
