Next Gen: So Far, So Boring

On 02/28/2013 at 01:45 AM by Casey Curran

So the PS4 was revealed last week and I’m just posting my thoughts now. There was something that made me feel like it didn’t feel like a next gen reveal. I didn’t want to say it was the graphics, because we’re at the point where it’s a bit unreasonable to expect another huge leap. Still, there was something about them that turned me off until I thought, “Kind of funny how Destiny and Watch Dogs, the two which actually feel new are also on current gen systems.” Then it hit me: These games are the same old shit I’m playing now. Outside Knack look at what they announced. Killzone 4, another Infamous, game that looks a lot like Forza/Gran Turismo, a Capcom game that looks like Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Diablo 3. Translation: sequel, sequel, another driving sim, could go either way, and a game I already own.

Where’s the ambition in these new games? Last gen I kept seeing something new at every turn, I saw Uncharted, Mass Effect, Too Human, Gears of War, Uncharted, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Lost Planet, hell, I’m having trouble remembering all these new games. Even though I had not owned an XBOX (my first console ever) for a year, I knew even though I’d have to wait, I was excited for what the next generation of systems would bring.

What the PS3/360/Wii reveals felt like

Even the games that were sequels to current gen games had something going for them to make them exciting. Halo 3 was the going to finish this big epic sci-fy trilogy, Ratchet and Clank were boasting visuals which made them look like something out of a Pixar movie, Final Fantasy’s next installment would be split into three completely different, yet somehow related games and Mario was going to space. They were familiar series, sure, but they were venturing into new territory that shook up the formula or felt like it was really moving to the next level.

Some of these were flops. It has to happen, but it kept gaming feeling so fresh for a while. The only games really bringing that kind of ambition now are Destiny and Watch Dogs, and I can play that on my PS3. The only PS4 exclusive that had real interesting ideas was Knack, which starred a main character with a very interesting new power that has a lot of gameplay potential. Infamous showed off a new conduit, but I didn’t see any evidence that his new powers won’t resemble regular weapons like rockets and grenades. Killzone had more colors, but no sign that it wouldn’t be more than just another Killzone.

Right now the only console I’m sold on is the Wii U. Wind Waker HD is the main reason, but The Wonderful 101 and Lego City at least show signs of an interesting new IP and an interesting new take on an existing one respectively. It could definitely use more new ideas and IPs, but it's a start. It makes me glad the system launched with Zombie U, at least the game had the balls to be different. And I’ll still play it when I get a Wii U because what it does different is something I want to try whether I like it or not. That’s the thing about taking a risk: Almost every time, it’s going to alienate some people. But there are others who may love it.

What the PS4 and Wii U's reveals felt like

I’m not going to start saying that gaming has left me or count me out of next gen. I’m just saying even though we’re getting quality software, game development is becoming boring. Games like Dead Space 3 and Fuse look like well-made games, but they’re taking no risks, they’re not doing anything that convinces me they’re going to be something really special. I want a next gen system to change that, where games like Destiny, The Last of Us, and Watch Dogs take all the buzz away from things like Call of Duty and Fuse.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I don't care if a game does something new or different.  I really only care about the story, the experience and if I enjoyed it or not.

I get that. It's just the best way to get me excited for a new system is to show a bunch of games with new ideas that don't look like anything I've seen before. Because if games feel the same and hardware's not that big of a leap forward, what's the point of upgrading?

Honesly, when the current gen systems came out, I kinda felt how you do now. That, and I didn't see a huge graphical leap with the launch titles.

Also, and I'm not saying this to be a dick, but none of the games you mentioned were available for these consoles' (PS3, 360, Wii) launches, and looking at the wikipedia entries regarding their launches, it looks like a lot of what you're talking about, sequels, generic sports titles, etc. were the norm for the last console generation at launch as well.

How close to launch they came out afterwards, but if we're judging based on the announcement for a system's launch, this really doesn't look any worse than the previous generation, though I can understand that you feel the Wii U is doing more new stuff out of the gate.

I'm willing to wait and see what console I will pick up or won't, since I skipped this gen.

I never said any of them came out at launch. I said they were upcoming games that were exciting. Whether they were launch or not is completely irrelevant.

Hmmm... ok, looking it up, I guess you're right, there were a lot of games you mentioned that were announced before those systems launched but that came out a while after launch, and actually Resistance was a launch title, so my mistake on saying "none" of what you mentioned fit the category.

That being said, I'm still willing to see where PS4 goes from here, and don't think the announcement is a good barometer for what games we'll be getting in the future when it's had time to come into its own.

How close they came out after launch, I don't know* sorry, it wasn't letting me edit my comment for some reason.

I feel what you're saying, but in my memory most of the time systems don't launch with very exciting games.... *cough Perfect Dark Zero cough*.  But it's that hope for new games that sustains them.  I think we'll see more games and here more announcements around E3.  I am personally not interested in Killzone, but the graphics look great.  The gameplay looked pretty standard run n gun shooter though.

Knack looked interesting.  Maybe Xbox will have more original IP's but I doubt it.  But who knows. I haven't been very impressed with the Wii U lineup, and the only game that excites me, Wind Waker, is an HD remake and is coming out almost a year after the release of the system.  Still no other major 1st party Nintendo games like a 3D Mario or Zelda in sight.

I have hope for the future.  It might take a while before great, NEW type games come out, but they will.  That's why there's so many blogs on this site talking about people moving towards PC, where the catalog is a little more expansive and filled with more risk takers and indie games.

Personally, I'm ready for a new system, and I want one with great graphics. I'm not a graphics whore by any means, but I want to see that uptick no matter how small.  I don't know if I'll get a Wii U or a PS4 or an Xbox first. Probably a Wii U for Windwaker.  Sealed

Wind Waker HD will be amazing. I'm sure if I'm patient we'll see some exciting things, I just thought they should have pulled one of those out for the reveal.

I'm not surprised by the slim pickings pre-launch (or the presumably slim post-launches), but I'm not forgiving of it either. That may be unfair, but I know I won't buy a new system until something really makes me say "we aren't in Kansas anymore". I know it takes time for developers to unlock a console's magic, but early adopters always seem to get punished for taking the 1st leap.

It took ES4: Oblivion to get me to cross the threshold to 360, but that was a completely new experience for my Morrowind-less mind. A generation of Season Passes later and I'm not sure what the next wave will have to come up with to really enamour me.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 02:43 PM

Yeah, the only current gen system I got at launch was Wii and I'm sure I wouldn't have if I owned a Gamecube. Waited for Mass Effect to get a 360 and Uncharted 2 convinced me to get a PS3. Both well worth it. Hopefully something will sucker me into next gen.

Casey, I hear you. I have to say that there are only a few games in the last couple of years that have gotten me super-excited. Every month, the Game Informer mag arrives, I flip though, and usually end up thinking "same old, same old". There's a new generation of hardware coming up, you'd think they'd come up with some new and exciting IPs for it!

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 02:44 PM

That's why I'm so excited for Destiny. It's one of my favorite developers who's been stuck on the same series for ten years into risky territory. That's the spark I want to see for next gen.

I wasn't impressed with the ps4 launch at all. Nothing but the same old crap. It seemed like they were turning the ps4 into a social device with all the talk of sharing. I just want to play games dammit. I'll probaly get a pc next time I go to buy a new gaming platform.

Agreed Aaron! Companies need to use the time they spend coming up with buzzwords in better ways, like creating quality titles! Sorry, Sony, The Playstation isn't an "Ecosystem". The rainforest is an ecosystem, the PS4 is a CONSOLE.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

I could not be any less interested in the social media aspects. I mean, I'm sure some people will like it, but sites like 1up and Pixlbit are the most I want from a social media.

TripOpt55

I get the complaint of the PS4 games they showed being disappointing, but the conference spent most of the time talking about games and tech. The share/social stuff was actually very minimal.

I can definitely see where you are coming from. In some of my upcoming posts I am going to be working through a backlog of games I wanted to play but never got around this gen. Some of these were HD collections of older games and I am finding that these titles - while older, get me so much more excited and tense while playing than most recent games that I have been playing. I was really excited to see the Playstation 4 being announced but after watching the conference - I must admit I was most excited by the opening montage video with Monster House playing in the background. Everything else were things I had seen before or have little that quipes my interest.

@sneenlantern Yeah, PDZ wasn't great but I remember when I got my 360 how excited I was to play that game and months before I got my new console -drooling over screenshots of Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Call of Duty 2. I do agree however that there is plenty of time left to wow me before the console is even launched - seeing as this was just the announcement and not E3 - and I think it is safe to say that I am still pretty excited about this generation.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 03:03 PM

There is definitely plenty of time left. I just got the feeling they weren't trying hard enough last week. The 360 was touting Gears as the next big thing and Perfect Dark Zero as the next Halo. Even though the second was wrong, you could just tell they were excited for next gen.

I watched the PS4 reveal recently too, and I felt the same way. I think there is typically an established line between derivative and re-hashed ideas, and sometimes I don't mind when something isn't fully realized & fine-tuned as long as there is a strong concept and the developer & publisher have the balls to take a risk.

This is how I felt about Mirror's Edge; I was enthralled by its evolution of platforming principles, and it actually had an immersive quality that got your heart pumping as you jumped across roof tops, and took death-defying leaps off of buildings to grab a pipe 40 feet below.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but the leap between Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World, or The Legend of Zelda to A Link To The Past seemed/seems absolutely massive - a true expansion of an IP in a way that both enhanced creativity and refined what already worked. Perhaps because of the increasing cost of development, studios just don't fine-tune titles as much, and that way that publishers breathe down a studio's neck doesn't allow for much "what if" concept development time.

And if I hear the term "Playstation Ecosystem" one more time, I'm going to Silvia Plath myself...

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 03:05 PM

I feel the same way. Mario Galaxy was able to achieve that as well without an increase of graphics just by the brilliance of the space physics. It's less about the increased power and more about the new ideas they do with it.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 03:34 PM

Exactly. If you look at the Legend of Zelda: The Legend of Zelda - A Link To the Past - Ocarina of Time - Wind Waker, that is a pretty significant evolution, so is Super Mario Bros - Super Mario World - Super Mario 64 - Super Mario Galaxy. It's rare to see those kinds of leaps, especially amidst the current gaming landscape.

Crossing my fingers for metroid 5 on the wii u.

I'm hoping they get their shot at their own IP personally. Something that screams new and is very gameplay focused.

I feel the same way. Nothing was really, omg gotta have that. Not to mention that I have the feeling that Sony is scrapping all of their already existing infrastructure like the PSN and backwards compatibility for this new console. As far as the Wii U, I only have a lukewarm feeling for it so far. Feelings. Nothing more than FEELINGS!

Casey Curran Staff Writer

Wii U could definitely be better, but Wind Waker HD. Love that game so much.

02/28/2013 at 03:29 PM

I'm not sure why it is that I'm not excited about the next generation of systems. I think the primary reason is that I can't afford to be excited at the moment.

That being said I am more excited about what is supposed to be coming to the Wii U than I am about anything I saw from Sony's presentation. I kept waiting for the WOW! and it just didn't happen.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:36 PM

Pretty much. That "wow" is nonexistant right now.

The Last of Us and Watchdogs are taking risks in what areas specifically?   I'm looking forward to Watch Dogs as well, but it doesn't seem like it's doing anything new to the open world genre other than adding a new wrinkle with the hacking abilities.  It seems as if most of the positive press for that game was based solely on how good the original demo looked.

You don't want a PS4 because you can play similar games on the PS3.  Yet you want a Wii U mostly because of Wind Waker HD which improves the graphics of a game that already exists.  Seems a bit hypocritical.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:35 PM

I just love WW that much. You can call it that, but tha'ts part of being gamer. Everyone has a series they get bored of for being more of the same, but another they love despite being more of the same for instance. I don't think that makes them hypocrites, just that they like certain things more than others. It's pretty much the same instance with me.

I never said they were taking risks either, just that they looked unlike what we are playing currently. Watch Dogs and Last of Us may just end up being another sandbox and action game respectively, but their takes on the genre at least look interesting. Just compare them to another Killzone and Infamous unless we see real signs they're doing something different.

Honestly, I think the days of gaming revolutions are pretty much done. You might get an occasional surprise, as I did with Valkyria Chroncles, but the industry has matured. Even the much-vaunted indie scene is largely retreads of 1980s game design.  You can only repackage game design concepts so many ways.

I think the last new system I was excited for out of the gate was the PS2, and before that, the N64. The PS2 lived up to the hype, the N64 not so much before I jumped ship to the PS1, a system that had nothing I cared about until two years after its release and which went on to become my single favorite platform of all time.

I think that as more developers get their sea legs on the PS4 or Wii U we'll see better games. Very few consoles have great launch titles, and even the better launch titles end up being deemed as overrated several years later once better games start coming out.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:38 PM

Yeah, I think it's a bit ridiculous to see another Mario 64/FFVII. I just wanted to see a few new ideas.

TripOpt55

02/28/2013 at 05:41 PM

It just seems like a bit too early to react this way. I think if games continue to look this way after E3, then yeah. A lot of those exciting games you mentioned for the PS3 weren't a part of the initial reveal. Cross-gen titles are going to be more plentiful than ever though, so I think with third-party stuff the "I could get it on PS3" issue will continue to be a problem. Though the next gen versions may be vastly superior. Watch Dogs has only been show on high end PC for instance which I imagine is the next gen version.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:40 PM

I hear you completely, that's exactly why I'm not even considering writing next gen off yet. But you have to admit, another Killzone and Infamous are not exactly the kinds of games you want to see introduced with a new system over something fresh and new. I'm hoping E3 will be the best one since 06.

chocobot

02/28/2013 at 06:06 PM

I think you just need to give it more time. The majority of the exciting current gen games you mentioned weren't announced near the reveal of the consoles. I understand not being ready for next gen, I feel that there's still so much life left in the current consoles and its a shame the industry is ready to move on already. But I wouldn't worry too much yet about no ambitious new games being made.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:41 PM

Why I said, "So far." I guess I just expected some kind of game to really blow me away.

Serraxor

02/28/2013 at 06:15 PM

Yeah, I kinda get you. But then again. I'm "the gamer that time forgot." I'm stuck at last gen and below, because the games just had more soul to them. They didn;t have stupid microtransactions, they didn't need a million patches. You didn't have to buy the freaking ending to them after buy the game itself (whatup, Asura's Wrath?)

I can say without hesitation, the gen we're in right now is probably going to be the last generation I'm staying on. Andmaybe the WiiU. Who knows. It's getting too expensive and I have a good 30 years of imports from the eras I love most that I can play. And that will likely last me to the end of my life.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:42 PM

This gen has actually been my second favorite after last gen so gaming definitely hasn't left me behind. And I hope it won't.

BrokenH

02/28/2013 at 06:30 PM

To be honest, I was happier during the PS2 era in my gaming cycle. More risks were taken to make original games then. (Everything from Odin Sphere to God-Hand & Okami) There was also a better selection of "good" jrpgs. I also miss Onimusha. It was my favorite capcom franchise for awhile then it just died. (Not to mention survival horror games then were actually survival horror. Ah, the days of Silent Hill 2-3, Fatal Frame 1,2,& 3, and RE4! Good times! Heck at this point I'd even welcome a 3rd Obscure!)

On the pc side of things I had greats like Kotor, Half Life 2,Jade Empire, and VTM: Bloodlines.

Last gen was definitely my favorite.

jgusw

02/28/2013 at 06:32 PM

I'm not too excited about gen.  Many of the early release games aren't that great anyway.  Hell..., in the beginning, the PS is usually used more as a device to watch movies than it is to play videogames.  I wonder what movies we'll watch on the PS4 for the first few months. :D  The real games will start showing up in a year or so.  I plan to get excited then.

And damn, a lot of you guys are really into Wind Waker.  You guys sure it's not just the same game with hd graphics?  Or is that enough?
