Lightning Returns Demo. Well what I think about it is...that it is really fun and great!

The Lightning Returns Demo should be up on X360  & PS3. I just tried the PS3 demo this evening and I'm really excited for the full game. I should note that I really enjoy the 13 series and felt that the party system and open world of the 13-2 was an improvement. I was anticipating the release of the new game and what I took away from the demo was:

1. No more party system.

I could be wrong, because I think I've seen gameplay further into the story where Lightning is being assisted by other characters, but what I love about this game is that you don't have to worry about healing your whole party anymore just yourself.

2. No more paradigms

Paradigms have been replaced with Schemas, or something like that. You can switch between 3 different sets of gear by pressing the shoulder buttons on the controller. In the demo they had presets of Dragoon, Black Mage, and Red Mage and they mix combat up quite a bit. There were some more slots in the customize menu but were locked in the demo, but I think you are limited to 3 at a time.

3. Staggering

The stagger system is one of my favorite parts of the combat in the 13 games. You are able to fill a second boss meter by attacking it's weakness with magic, doing so will make your physical attacks more powerful, thus giving you an edge in combat, but also make the fights difficult if you don't have the right job equipped.

4. Overclocking

This seems to be a new addition to the combat system from previous games. It's like a super meter in Street Fighter games that slows down time and increases your attacks or something. Quite cool!

4. Outfits

I love how Lightning switches crazy outfits at the touch of a button. Seeing that crazy Dragoon armor, flash change to a Black Mage hat, flash change to A Reg Mage hat, really it's quite fun to do!

5. CGI

I know this has no impact on gameplay, but the cutscene is just so gorgeous. I don't know if there will be more of them throughout the game, but that opening fight with Snow and Lumina just looks so damned nice!

And that's it. The game includes a small area to fight some random enemies which ends with a boss fight. Really is way to short for a demo, compared to something like the 15 hour demo that is Bravely Default on 3DS. Also, there is some Social Networking system that lets you post screenshots to facebook and twitter, but I didn't set that up.

Over all, I see this game battle system as an improvement, but I don't know how I feel about losing the 3 party system. So far so good!

Update:
I played around with the Twitter settings in the game menu and was able to post screenshots into my Twiiter feed from in-game. I didn't think I would have had as much fun as I did making poses and stuff. I had lot of fun! Here are a few game pics from my Twitter feed:

I'll go look up some CGI videos of this.

I only saw the opening cutscene. The one where Lightning fights Snow at the disco. Not sure if youtube has HD version, but the in-game looks crisp!

I was also digging it, so far.

I'm pretty stoked to play the full game

Wow Final Fantasy sure has changed since I was into it.

Only cool thing about Lightning is she has pink hair.

Haven't played any of the XIII series, so no idea about any of it. I just thought I'd stop by and say hey anyway.

Hello! I hear you. 13 is probably one of the most polarizing game in the series. But I like the action style combat and open areas.

I downloaded it last night but I was busy playing Tales of Graces F so I didn't get around to playing it.

I hated XIII. Doing Paradigm Shift every 10 seconds was exhausting and ultimately about as much fun as a root canal.

I played the demo of XIII-2 and didn't like it much either. As always I'll give this a shot but I'm not holding my breathe

Looks like Red Mage is a pimp.

LOL! And the starting area in the demo is a night club!

They are probably going to have to cram all the data on one Xbox 360 DVD, so like XIII-2, I imagine there will only be CGI at the beginning and end. It's a shame, but I imagine those pretty CGs cost too much money to be worth it anyway (the game engine still looks pretty great).

I think 13-1 had more CGI than 13-2. I'm not expecting lots of CGI throughout this game. I played on PS3, so I don't know about xbox?

The only problem that I have about this game that I also noticed in 13-2 and towards the end of 13 was that everything looked very bland and the colors were very mushy, unless it was a cutscene. Sqare knows how to make cool cutscenes.

I would rather play 13-2 and 13-3 than the first game even if it has a higher visual quality. I think 13-1 had a longer dev time as well. Anyway, these games are all about the combat for me so the visuals didn't bother me too much. The customization of the gear sets is really great too.

Those cutscenes on the demo are pretty amazing, a staple for the FF franchise. I will pick this game up eventually...after I finish the first two games, lol.

That Red Mage suit it awesome! I still have to finish XIII-2 so not sure i'll ever get around to this.
