Another week, another...wait, what have I been doing?

Man, the week+ since my last blog has been very busy. New baby, going back to work (plus an overtime day), and my wife has had some trouble with her stitches (she tore a little during the birth). I've played a little Monster Hunter on PSP but that's about it. Been reading a lot of comics lately (courtesy of the library, of course) because that's so much easier to do than play a game. I finished Sandman 3 and it was really good. I've started vol 4 and it looks like we're back to main story again (vol 3 was just unrelated short stories, though very good ones). I'm just in the first section of that but so far it's really interesting.

Batgirl covers

I read the first two volumes of Batgirl and those were pretty good. The writer really nailed her inner monologue. She seems like a complicated but sympathetic character. I was also surprised to find that they didn't sex her up in the artwork. Well, other than a few choice panels at the end of vol 2, but they put a lot more confidence in her character than I expected and it's a stronger series for it. I do wish she'd fought at least one familiar badguy but the villains were still quite interesting. On the flip side of that I read the first volume of Batwoman and it was very different from Batgirl. The main character is a total jerk, for starters, and the story had a heavy supernatural bent. Looks like the long arc might be more political your typical Batman story too. I'm going to give the second volume a try and see if I can stand Kate Kane for another 80 or 100 pages or whatever it is.

But first Sandman!

That's not all I read this week, though we have to go back two years to get the context. On Free Comic Book Day (the only time I've ever gone) I got the first issue of the Mega Man comic from Archie and it was pretty good. I tried to find issues 2-4 but it turned out to be more trouble than I was willing to go through (my local comic store was unable to order them). Well I finally got around to ordering the trades for the first two volumes from Amazon (no, my library didn't have them). They didn't take very long to read (got through vol 2 in one sitting) but they were just so...enjoyable. They have an earnestness and sincerity that you just don't see anymore. Definitely my favorite thing I read this week. I'll be picking up the rest of the trades sometime. This is a series I'm glad to own.

Since I mentioned it last week too, what'd you guys think of Dr. Who? I thought it was probably the best episode of the season so far. Yeah, the anti-Clara bunch aren't happy but I thought it was great how she had to walk a mile in his shoes, so to speak. The doctor hasn't always been real nice this season but she found out it's not as easy as it looks. And we finally saw a little of the old doctor when he sent those monsters back where they came from yelled that he protected this plane. I've enjoyed this whole season but it just gets better each week.

Now let's see...I've got a crap ton of old blogs to read O_O I make no promises!

Agree on Doctor Who. The episode was great and fuck the anti-Clara bunch, she gave a great performance as Clara The Doctor. It's probably as close as we'll ever come to a female Doctor.

Clara has been great. I'll be sad to see her go at Christmas. As for a female doctor, have you forgotten about Donna Noble? Tongue Out

This seaon has to be the best season of Doctor Who yet.  I have loved every episode.  I may find The Doctor, not Capaldi, to be a little grating, but Clara is top-notch.

I don't know how they keep coming up with these crazy plots. I love 'em.

The writing has been great this season

batgirl seems cool.  I've heard good things about that comic.  I picture her more as the paralyzed character these days than as her crime fighting self..

I had been under the impression that the New 52 was a reboot of all of DC's various comic lines but that's obviously not the case, at least not for Batman. This Batgirl run happens after her time as Oracle. Some radical new neurological surgery has given Barbara Gordon use of her legs again. There were several flashbacks to The Killing Joke (when Joker shot her and she became paralyzed; I've actually read that one, thank goodness) and she even freezes up a couple times like she has PTSD. She's an interesting character.

What do you think of the New 52? I haven't read much, but I've heard rather mixed things about it.

I've only read Batman-related stuff, so I can't speak to the New 52 as a whole and I'm fairly new to comics in general, for that matter. But I've enjoyed what I've read so far. The main Batman run has been good (I've read the first two volumes) as well as Batgirl, like I said. I'm hoping to read Nightwing, whenever it shows up at the library again, but based on the Night of the Owls collection I'll be skipping Batwing, Batman Inc, and Birds of Prey. I'm going to give Batwoman another chance because the story was intersting but man, she's a butt munch.

Holy crap, I feel for your wife! That has to have hurt!

I never knew about the differences between Batwoman and Batgirl. Interesting.

I need to read Sandman and I've heard the Mega Man and Sonic comics are both pretty solid, so I'd love to read those crossovers.

Don't watch Dr. Who yet. I keep telling myself I'll get through the episodes I started on Netflix, but I haven't yet.

I didn't know there even was a Batwoman until recently. She actually doesn't work with Batman, so I'm not sure why she picked that name.

Sandman is really good. There was a very unexpected development right in the first story; I can't wait to see where it goes next. Mega Man is also great, of course, and I know that the same guy writes the Sonic comics (hence the crossovers), so I'd like to read those too.

You gotta watch Dr. Who. So good! Just start it on Netflix. That's a good place to begin.

I read the first Batwoman comic. I wanted to like it with J.H. Williams doing the amazing art and a great writer in W. Haden Blackman, but like you said, she was a jerk and I didn't follow it.
Gail Simone I've heard of from Saga and when they announced her doing Batgirl I thought it was perfect, but I've not read either.
I also get so confused: Batwoman, Batgirl, Catwoman. . . is there a Catgirl?

I'm willing to give the next Batwoman book a chance because it's free (yay, library!) but I'd drop it if buying was my only option. I definitely recommend Batgirl though. Simone doesn't a great job with her character. As far as I know there isn't a Catgirl, though that sounds like a serious missed opportunity. Just as long as they never make a Catboy Sealed

Ha ha. Catboy. Since it seems to be a trend lately to change a superhero's gender, why not?

make sure to check out Wonder woman if you can, it's her anniversary now. plus a book of her creation was just released.

Busy life, I understand completely. Just make sure your child gets their hands on a controller if only to build the muscle memory.

Doctor Who?!?! Pah! I've washed my hands of it, even after giving it a third chance. Interesting to see that the viewer ratings have gone down a bit since the intro of this new Doctor...

Wonder Woman? I know almost nothing about her but maybe the library has her New 52 book.

My older son has already shown a healthy interest in controllers and recently took a liking to Kirby. It's a good start Smile

I think this season of Doctor Who took longer than usual to get going but I've really enjoyed it. There have been some great stories. The first half of the season finally that aired this last saturday was really good too.
