This Halloween sale was actually a very good sale I found 3 games that I bought, so my first one I had on the 360 but for $7 I got Catherine

Then for another $7 I got The Walking dead survival instincts

Then I got this one for $7

So I finally found a horror game thats right there with Fatal Frame 2 yes you heard right this game is a total trip and scared the crap out of me, but this is easily the best game I got in a while so I will a little of what its all about.

Known in Japan as Siren: New Translation, this game was the first decent survival horror title available for download from the PSN. Until then, we had only really enjoyed the occasional horror game on Blu-Ray, such as the accomplished F.E.A.R.; the main franchises, such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil wouldn’t see the welcoming light of day until 2009 at least.

But being first to the PSN doesn’t automatically make a game good, so what is it about Siren: Blood Curse that leads us to start our 20 Days of PSN with it?

Siren: Blood Curse was made available as a series of twelve episodes. Of course, you could also purchase all the episodes at once to save a little time. These episodes tell the grisly tale through a linking set of stories, with different scenarios and various playable characters intertwining as you progress through the game.

The plot focuses on a US television crew that have travelled to the Land of the Rising Sun to investigate and document the legend of Hanuda, a village where – 30 years prior – it is said that human sacrifices had taken place.

The zombie-like characters in the game are called the shibuto. In the original Siren, these characters were originally the residents of Hanuda, now soul-less and subordinate after being forced to take part in a blood-baptism ritual.

Unlike these characters, Siren: Blood Curse won't leave you feeling blue...

Controlled as a third-person survival horror game, with a fixed view just over the shoulder of your current playable character, Siren: Blood Curse’s defining feature is the ability to ‘sightjack’. Sightjacking allows you to see and hear what is going on from the perspective of nearby shibito, humans and other creatures.

The clarity of the images you see when employing the sightjack mechanism depend entirely on your distance and position to your player. Sightjacking can be used to highlight a shibito’s position or to give reconnaissance of locations and items of interest. Key to the strategy within Siren: Blood Curse, however, is the fact that a player is not able to move while sightjacking, making them vulnerable to attack.

In addition, Siren: Blood Curse features an environment that can help, and hinder, your progress. Many of the objects you see are able to be moved. Which means they are also able to be disturbed, attracting nearby shibito to your whereabouts.

Much of the time in Siren: Blood Curse, you are rewarded for avoidance of the shibito. Stealth is definitely a better strategy in the game than trying to fight your way out of problems. Because of this, you often find yourself on the edge of your seat as you attempt to pass silently within a few feet of the dangerous and scary characters you’ll discover along the way. Much like a scene from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, shibito that have been alerted to your presence will shout to draw others to your position, making it even more important for you to avoid conflict.

Theres a full American cast as a news team doing a story on this town which is cool for a game made by the same creator of Silent Hill, the models for the characters were actually taken from real actors and another interesting fact if you look at the creatures in the game none look the same and in most games the creatures wonder aimlessly to where in this game they go on like they would have when they were alive its very creepy. One thing that sets this aside from every other horror game is the feeling I got playing it has you tense and nervouse but at the same time the behavior of the creatures is disturbingly realistic.

By far this is one of the best Horror games I ever played and im not far enough into it to say better then Fatal Frame but just in the first episode its close very close and pixlbit if you like Horror games then I beg you to get this and tell me its not one of the scariest games you ever played. Happy Halloween. .....

Catherine is easily the best of the 3 games up there.  Tough as nails and with an interesting story to boot.

I didn't find Siren to be anything special...then again, I don't really get wowed by anything in the survival horror genre.  Just not my cup of tea.  For the price though I'm sure it's a steal.

I heard about the original Siren for PS2 a while back in EGM. Good to know the sequel is also scary apparently.

I played the first Siren and I dont remember it being that scarey, maybe since I survived Kuon I figured it couldnt get any worse, lol. I played Kuon first before the original first Siren game even though it released first before Kuon. Kuon.....omgee...my nightmare filled horror that I dont think I ever wanna play again.

Siren is a fantastic horror game it literally tripped me out not to sure if was just the combination of being weird and creepy as much as scary but none the less a great game I really wanted Catherine in physical form but 7 bucks vrs 30 no brainer and I like the walking dead series so I wanted Survival instincts but wasnt going to pay 20 plus for a game with crappy ratings but 7 bucks was worth the risk.

I passed on those first two titles you spoke of. I already own Catherine as a PS3 disc based game and I want the second game on disc.

I already bought Siren long ago and indeed it does hold up well over time. I still need to replay it to unlock some of the things I lost when my console died. Also I need to replay it again to unlock more goodies in the game. I really like the episodic narrative of the games. Perhaps I should re-introduce this game in a future Octoberween Game Title List blog given how I spoke of it so long ago....
