Middle-Earth is B-O-R-I-N-G and Borderlands is too.

I normally don’t enjoy bashing on games, especially when I know that there are real devoted fans of certain franchises and genres and you can’t come off as anything less than a clueless jerk when disliking anything popular, but I must. Usually when I don’t like a game I just don’t bother writing anything about it at all, and I don’t bother to finish it either. I’m not a games reviewer and I have plenty of options out there so I don’t feel an obligation to spend more time with a game more than I want to. How am I supposed to know when to give up on a game? Answer is: when I’ve just stopped playing for a long ass time and don’t feel like playing more of it.

Middle-Earth: Something, Something, Mordor

I’m really surprised at how many good reviews this game is getting because this game is truly awful. I should point out that according to the in-game stats I’ve only covered 20 percent of the game in about 10 hours so it’s too early to pass harsh judgment on the game, but I really don’t like what I’ve played so far. For starters the game is ugly. It takes place behind those giant gates leading to Mordor home of the Orcs where Sam and Frodo were trying to sneak through in the movies. A lot of what is behind the gates is not very eye pleasing. It’s mostly brown and devoid of any other color. While this might be an accurate representation of a desolate ruined world from the books and film, it just isn’t fun to look at or run around in for tons of hours. It isn’t exactly what one would imagine when you think of Middle-Earth and it’s gorgeous landscapes and regions like Rivendell, The Shire, or Minas Tirith, etc.

The world is mostly populated by ruins and groups of orcs and slaves running around everywhere with the occasional mutant wolf/sabre-tooth thingies, Wargs I think they’re called, showing up now and then.  The combat is really dumb and simple. You are really underpowered at the beginning so the most you can do when being ambushed by Orcs (which happens a lot) is run. Otherwise you’ll be jumping and evading around everything merely getting a couple hits in here and there hoping for something to go down (hopefully not you), it’s very repetitive and boring.

It’s not all bad though. I was actually enjoying what little story and NPCs there are to interact with but those story missions suddenly disappeared off the map until I do more side quests, which I don’t like doing. That’s the other good thing. The game is open world and lets you take missions in any order you want, assuming you enjoy doing these missions. The “Nemesis” system is also very interesting. If you die fighting an Orc they get promoted to higher ranks and become more powerful, thus harder to fight the next time you encounter them and they will remember you even if you don’t remember them.  Sometimes enemies retreat when they know they are about to be defeated which can be a bit frustrating at times.

So, this game started off with a bad impression for me. I really don’t like the world and I find the combat and action to be too repetitive, cheap and boring. Most of the side missions appear to be very similar in objectives, stealth, arrow attack, etc. I need to see and play more if it to really get a good impression of it, but I’m just having a hard time wanting to do so. Another game, Borderlands Pre-Sequel managed to grab me and pull me in with its opening missions, visuals and sound design enough that I wanted to play more of it, but towards the middle it’s also getting a bit repetitive and boring now.

Next time…

Borderlands is B-O-R-I-N-G too.

I hear you. That's what happened to me with the first Assassin's Creed, except that it was a beautiful game, but the game play was just so freaking boring. It's also happened to me with other games that other people seem to love. I can't think of any specific ones off the top of my head, though.

As for games based off The Lord of the Rings, I don't play them. Most of them are inspired by the movies, which I loathed. Especially since I love the books so much. The one exception was Lego LotR. And even then, I kept thinking "but that's not what really happened!".

I thought the movies were pretty decent, though they obviously didn't tell the fulll story.

I was disappointed that they couldn't work in Tom Bombadill.

I know, for some reason Tom gets left out of just about everything. As for the movies, Peter Jackson just didn't get the mythology that made the books so powerful for me. Over-emphasis on romance that didn't exist (Arwen was such a minor character in the books) and dramatic war scenes of events that never happened also annoyed me. I don't mind that people like the movies, I just can't stand them.

Hehe, I actually love the films and keep in mind i've read the books (atleast the first two on each medium). The thing is, I honestly think making an acuarate adaptation of LOTR (almost word by word) is downright hard and I don't mind some of the changes, because I still thought the films felt like Tolkien.

I should have emphasized that I don't like AC games. The only exception was 2, but because Venice Italy was just gorgeous and that alone was worth running around and exploring. Never cared for the gameplay. Here the gameplay is similar, except you can use mounts sometimes, but the world is butt ugly.

I enjoyed the LOTRO movies more than you I guess. I do love the novels and I think the Lego games are super fun. This game does have some flashbacks of Mordor in it's better days, kind of looks like Rivendell populated by elves which is neat I guess? I actually like seeing Mordor before it fell apart, but the game is very button mashy and hack-slash.

In terms of games I think the Lego games capture the spirit of adventure more and the LOTRO online MMO captures the world the best, the Shire, Tom Bambodill, Gondor etc.

I'd still want to play it, but  know what you mean about bland, boring environments.

Wonder how KnightDriver will take your next blog. I forget how he feels about the original.

I'm going to take it BAD!!! Ha! Just kidding. I'm actually interested in what he'll say. There's nothing like a good debate.

This isn't about  "I'm right, you are wrong" type of article. By all means I do think there are progressive gameplay ideas that are very next gen present here. For starters, it's open world. You can take on quests in any order you like, run in any direction you like, that is great. You can fast travel, so you don't have to walk long distances all the time. That's great for an open world game. The story is kind of cool. You see Mordor before it fell, I think? The AI is pretty unique and new too. Enemies basically hunt you down with their own little armies, and when you fight a captain they usually get a lot of back up make it kind of hard. The combat is very much like AC and Batman games, which I've never really loved. There is a lot of it here. A lot. After about 10 hours, I'm kind of meh with combat. I do have powerups though, so it gets better I guess. Oh, and the Captains have unique personalities and talk a lot of shit, which makes things interesting.Cool

Yeah, I love Arkham combat, but I can easily see how it gets old quick for you.

I've heard the repetitiveness criticism for the Mordor game. I'd still love to experience the AI in the game though.

Although I bash the game at the beginning, I do point out the positive and think there is enough to check out. I do think the combat is Ad Naseum here which is my real issue as well as the ugly world, but thats more of a  personal taste. The bad things just bother me a lot more than most and I was wondering why people have defended the game so much?

Heh, I already looked at Totalbiscuit take on it (he liked it BTW) and Julian's review here on Pixlbit and i'm already sold on it. I'm also going to take Julian's word that the game gets much more different once you progress more.

At its core the game is mostly combat focused, and as I'm progressing through the game I still find the combat repetative and tedious. The stealth is okay, but the constant need to search for health items and arrows is really annoying. The game has a lot of content but it honestly feels like it's all just endgame content. I'm aware of Julian's review and that's the reason I'm playing through to the end, but I'm finding it very difficult to do so.

I've been back on forth on this game.  I saw a trailer for it, wanted to play it, and then lost interest.  I watched a friend play it a few days ago and now I want to play it get it again.  I'll wait till it's under $20 before I pick it up.
