I've Hit Rock Bottom! Somebody Save Me!

This is a late night rant, so it might be incoherent. Apologies in advance...

I started writing a blog in defense of mundanity of gameplay mechanics in games, and not in a satirical way either. If you've been following my blogs, you'll know that I was considering giving up gaming for a while. Part of the reason is the number of releases that I can't seem to keep up with, but there also doesn't seem to be a lot of originality in new games with the exception of a few and maybe a handful of indie games, although I do feel like indie games are getting too comfortable with 2D plaltformers/puzzle genre and really need to move on from this. Aside from the few new game releases that I played this year, I kept falling back to the same repetative quest grinding of free-to-play MMOs and the gem/loot collecting of self-playing, no-thinking-required mobile games.  As much as I like to consider myself open minded and wanting new ideas from games, I fall back into comfortable habits because I already know I'm going to enjoy the experience. The redundancy in gameplay has really just become filler, a way to keep you into something that is actually quite empty-- and I keep falling for it? I wonder if this addictive design of reduncy and instant reward-for-doing-nothing system is seriously harming my judgement when it comes to new game experiences that are well...different or is it a negative side effect of binge gaming.

Does anyone else feel this way? Are you okay with redundancy?  I know that this type of argument has been made against MMOs, but also includes franchises, like GTA, Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, Mario and Pokemon games.

Update: I should have been more specific.By 'redundancy' I mean there is no point to gameplay aside from keeping you playing without 'meaningful rewards'. You aren't necessarily becoming stronger or learning strategies like in a MOBA or a hard raid in an MMO or a fighting game. It's just there to keep you from finishing something for as long as possible--unnessary basically. Grinding in certain types of games like a Final Fantasy game does make you stronger if you are having trouble beating a boss for example so it can be a resourceful tool, but some mobile games give you a time out unless you wait an hour or buy 'gems' or whatever bullshit currency to keep playing like old arcade or pinball machines. Even with the arcade/pinball analogy, you can make a quarter go on forever if you become skilled at a game so even arcades/pinball do it better. Cool

(Divinity Original Sin is quite hard to get into at first, possibly due to the streamlining and consolisation of other popular RPGs? )

Okay, firstly, since you're in an MMO mood, would you like to play Guild Wars 2 together? My guild kinda disbanded unfortunately, so it'd be great to find another person to play with. Secondly, I feel you on the indie game front. They're starting to move away from it but now they seem rather comfortable in the roguelike genre, or the 3D narrative experiences.

Thirdly, I fucking love MMOs, so I feel like that answers your question :p

Yes. I'd love to play Guild Wars 2. Is there a particular class or race that would compliment your character?

Divinity Original Sin is still and Indie game and a damned great one. I think these types of Indie games deserve more recognition and praise as opposed to whatever 2D thing is nowadays. Indie just needs to evolve already.

I also love MMOs and was sort of defending the grindiness of them which I find relaxing.

Depends. I have a few characters, and am always ready to roll a new one. I haven't maxed a character yet, but my two highest characters are a ranger, an engineer, and I want to level my thief up a bit as well. We're friends on steam aren't we? I'll talk to you on there should we want a game. Also, what's your steam name again?

I don't feel like that but I definitely see ur point. The sad thing is developers stick to what sells. Some are afraid to try new things for the fact that their hard work might get criticized harshly from others. If they stick to what sells then they have have a low chance of harsh criticism from players and even review sites. I tend to not stick with MMOs thou, I just don't get into them as much playing alone and half the time that's how it goes. I will say thou I do miss archage   :(

Speaking of MMOs the expansion for ff14 announced the new race. They don't look all that different I think from one of the races already available but then again I haven't played the actual game in forever so maybe I'm wrong. It's also still priced 60$ which I'm hoping is wrong, I don't think 60 is fair for an expansion especially since the game is orginally 60 and u have to pay a subscription fee.

$60? Seriously? This isn't some game changing expansion? It's just adding a new realm and some new mounts, possibly a few more classes or jobs, but $60 is a bit excessive. I know Star Wars just put out an expansion, as did WoW  and LOTRO charges a lot as well, so I guess it's just a sign of changes?

I haven't heard anything else regarding it but I'm hopeing that's  the new players price and ones that already got the original game get it cheaper. I guess we will have to let it get closer to know for sure.

I would imagine that that is the full price for new players, or maybe the cost of the Collectors Edition. Interesting.

Not gonna lie, I tend to like simple 2D platformers that could have been made over a decade ago. You grow up with something ...

I dont mind nostalgia. I was referring to the overwhelming number of Indie games that use the same formula. It gets tired after a while.

Ah. Can't comment there, only indie games I've played recently are Limbo and Fez (Fez was a while ago).

I hear what you're saying about redundancy, and I tend to seek out new experiences found in indie PC games.  But there's always going to be redundancy in some form, I mean every novel is made out of sentences, if you know what I mean.

well, also its ok if you keep playing just because it's fun...  you don't grind levels by playing pacman, but u play anyway because u just enjoy it.  I dunno, it's complicated.

Yes. You can play for Prestige (beating your best score) or just to kill time. I'm just saying is that mundanity is everywhere, and I don't like it.

I play for challenge, ultimately. If a game doesn't provide it, it is redundant and mundane to me.  An interesting aesthetic and catchy music rounds out the package. So that means only about 5% of games interest me. Divinity: OS is one of them, but I don't have time for a large RPG now.

asrealasitgets

12/21/2014 at 05:43 PM

Ahh, so you play for Prestige. I don't mind a dumb hack-n-slash or button mashy game here and there, but not overwhelmingly everywhere.

I don't know about prestige, but challenging games engage me more. They require more focus, thought, and attention to information..  Right now I'm playing Armored Core V: Verdict Day, and some of the missions are kicking my ass, but I keep playing them over and over to complete all the subquests, trying out different combinations of parts.  I don't get that kind of intense involvement with Shadow of Mordor, AC: Unity, or Dragon Age Inquisition, and thus their simplistic systems and shallow content feel redundant.

I'm okay with redundancy, as long as its packaged in a manner I jive with.

I'm looking at you, Souls franchise.

Can't seem to get enough of that shit.

asrealasitgets

I don't think Souls games are redundant, they have very good one-on-one combat where there is always a chance you can die. I was mostly referring to games like Diablo 3, where you are just clicking endlessly looking for loot, and that is the bulk of the game. Even that game can be more challenging in harder levels, but a lot of new MMOs are guilty of this. A lot of the game is locked away until you reach level cap. I love Diablo 3 however, so thus my defense of redundancy in certain aspects. this is a weird subject matter.

12/21/2014 at 08:59 PM

Ahh.  I understand better now.

Yeah I gave up waaaay before level cap in Diablo 3.  Good game, but I felt like I was just holding down the buttons and advancing the story.  I guess it gets harder at higher levels?  I don't have the patience to hold down R2 for 20 hours to find out.

asrealasitgets

I'm playin on PC, and my finger is going to fall off from all clicking. I definitly would have remapped my actions to ABXY buttons, and not R2 if I was playing on console. I would kill myself with that R2! On normal level you are basically advancing the story through Act V, if you got Reaper of Souls. Then the game gets harder on repeat with higher difficulty and it becomes about stats and gear. I still find the repetativness of the game relaxing though, if that makes any sense, but honestly dude, REMAP to face buttons OMG! Cry

I've been sensitive to the manipulation of games lately. Those that throw endless new things at you to keep you there. Borderlands was doing, and still is doing, that to me, but I've really burnt out on it and can't stomach another Borderlands thing. GIven the length of many games these days, and my regular burnout after a lot of gameplay, I think I might skip DLC for a while. The last few season passes I've gotten, I never played because I got tired of the game.

I wasn't going to mention Borderlands because I like parts of the new one, like the setting and laser guns, but there is a lot of grind in between, and I wish they would get away from that and just give you a more focused story or at least give you mounts and crafting earlier. I read some of their dungeons are very creative and fun. Why hide them in the end of the game. They could have included them during the campaign. I stopped playing after I unlocked the Stingray mounts. The game just ran out of steam for me after starting off strong.

I played it a lot and loved it, but any game starts getting to me around the 100 hour mark, no matter how good.

I think everyone has to decide what they're comfortable with and recognize what it is they're looking for. I don't mind formulaic approaches to game design as long as the end result pushes my buttons the right way. I try to bounce between different genres so as to not spend too much time on one (for fear of overfamiliarity or boredom; there was a point in the late '00's where this happened to me regarding FPSs).

I have a different view than yours when it comes to some of these games. If the user is enjoying their experience where is the harm? There are a lot of other games that offer something fresh, something new that can be experienced. What does bother me is the "freemium" model moble games offer where they do time you out. If the game is good I don't mind spending a couple of bucks on it, instead of having this timer feature.
