Contra 4

Not having access to a DS for the longest time meant that I missed out on this game. It's always been there lurking in the back of my mind though. When my brother got me a 3DS for Christmas, owning this game suddenly became top priority. Having completed the Arcade Mode and most of the Challenge Mode recently, I can say that it was worth the wait.

Contra 4 was developed by WayForward Technologies and published by Konami Digital Entertainment in 2007 for the Nintendo DS. Despite that four in the title, this is actually the eleventh entry in the Contra series. They named it like that because it's a direct sequel to Contra III: The Alien Wars on SNES. WayForward is no stranger when it comes to playing on nostalgia. Just look at Double Dragon Neon and DuckTales: Remastered for proof.

The year is 2638. With the defeat of the vile Red Falcon, Earth is once again at peace. Peace doesn't last long unfortunately. An alien entity known as Black Viper appears and begins launching catastrophic attacks against humanity. Unwilling to sit back and casually accept this hellish fate, the Earth Federation sends a strike team of their most elite Contra Force commando units. Their mission is to destroy Black Viper and it's vast legions of aliens, robots, and mutants.

It won't be easy. Contra games are renown for their punishing difficulty and relentless pacing. This one is no exception. If anything it amps up the difficulty to extremes at times. Practice, practice, practice and memorizing enemy placement will help immensely. Different soldiers are available. Lance Bean and Bill Rizer return from the original Contra. Mad Dog and Scorpion are also introduced. Granted, they are all basically the same except with different palate swaps. The important thing is they are all muscular, shirtless dudes with bandannas. Five hidden characters are also unlockable through the Challenge Mode.

Contra 4's Arcade Mode is the meat and potatoes of the game. It consists of nine stages. Some of these are remixes of classic levels featured in previous games. Like the Jungle, Waterfall, and City levels. Pseudo 3D base levels from the original Contra are back as well. These place the camera behind your soldier as you push forward through alien bases destroying everything in your path. Most of the action takes place with a side scrolling 2D view. Touching an enemy or enemy gunfire kills you instantly. Tight, responsive controls are a blessing. Plus you can gain extra lives through score and have four continues.

This level looks familiar...

And so do those aliens!

In order to combat Black Viper's army you'll need weapons. A pea shooter is provided as a default weapon. It's rather weak, however, so thank the Maker different kinds of weapon upgrades are doled out via flying orbs that pass by. You can equip two different weapons and freely switch between them at any time. Weapons can also be leveled up by collecting them again. This is extremely important for survival. A powered up Machine gun can tear through bosses with ridiculous ease. Spread makes a welcome return. As does Flame, Laser, Crush (missiles that explode repeatedly) and Barrier. Which renders you invulnerable for a brief period of time. There's also Homing missiles and Smart Bombs.

Of course this wouldn't be Contra without some epic boss fights. Some of the bosses are huge, menacing, and quite powerful. Towering aliens that take up both screens. Giant Robots threaten to smash you into a bloody pulp with their mechanical fists. Tanks, Spider Droids, some kind of weird alien fish thing, and more! Black Viper is no joke either. I try to avoid spoilers in my reviews, but let me just say that this hideous alien mofo didn't disappoint. In the end it's all about learning patterns, adjusting your strategy, and perseverance. Leveled up weapons also helps out tremendously.

Base levels are back!

Look out Bill!

My only real beef with this game is that the action takes place on both screens. A grappling hook is used to navigate back and forth between them. Enemies will be raining death from above, behind, and all around you. Having to look at two screens simultaneously takes a bit of time to adjust to. It's not too bad, but anybody interested in this game should definitely be aware of this. There's no hand holding here. Your thrown head first into the madness and it never stops until that final triumphant jingle plays when Black Viper goes down.

As for the visuals, this game looks quite nice. Slowdown is nonexistent despite a ton of action going on almost constantly. Everything looks vivid, colorful, and the chunky sprites have a nice amount of detail. Animations are silky smooth. Base levels are a bit on the fugly side, but that didn't bother me much, or detract from the overall experience.

The music was composed by Jake Kaufman. It's intense, ominous, sometimes creepy, and sounds fitting. Sound effects are mostly recycled from earlier games, but that's completely fine, and even adds a nostalgic touch. Characters have voices that can be turned off. They spout cheesy one liners when you respawn. Like: "Let's Party!", "Take em out!" and don't forget about those dramatic death screams. Here's a couple of my favorite songs.

My Score: (9/10)

Contra 4 is a hardcore game. I probably wouldn't recommend it to everybody. I would definitely recommend it to fans of this series, or anybody looking for a good 2D action game on DS that will put up a challenge. Once the main campaign mode is completed there's a ton of fun little challenges that can unlock hidden characters and bonus content. Even the original Contra and Super C on NES! I wouldn't recommend buying it for that alone though since the emulation is off.

That's my opinion anyway. Thanks for reading.

I only played Contra 4 a little.  I bought it long ago.  One of these days I will play through it.  I need to play through Metal Slug 7 (DS) too.

It's not that long of a game. Well, for a portable action game, maybe it is. It took me a while to beat it, but that was mostly because it's really hard. I'm still debating Metal Slug 7. It's kind of pricey online. Undecided

art design looks sweet man.  I'm not a contra man myself, but I respect the series.  I can't handle the hardcoreness of it, but I envy those who can.

I hear ya Snee. These games are intense and demand practice and a lot of patience. I've always had a soft spot for the series though. Contra on NES is one of my favorite games of all time. I don't think I could ever possibly get sick of playing it.

I did not play this game but it looks really good. I know the games are pretty hard. I remember playing and early game and not getting very far.

It's a great game Pete, but definitely not for everybody. Just about all the games in the whole series are pretty hardcore when you get down to it. I think this one takes the cake though with the dual screens and how weak your default gun is. It was intense, but so satisfying.

I'm awful at Contra games so I never got this one. WayForward is awesome though.  Have you ever tried their Shantae games, DuckTales Remastered, or the Wii version of A Boy and His Blob?  Those are my favorites.

Yeah, WayForward is great. I was really happy with what they did with Double Dragon Neon. I've never played Shantae but am planning on buying it on the 3DS VC soon. I have Risky's Revenge on Steam. I skipped DuckTales Remastered because I already own it on NES. That was the main reason why I wanted a NES again. It's one of my favorites and isn't compatible with clone systems. I don't have a Wii unfortunately.

If you like DuckTales at all you really should get Remastered.

The thing is I already own it on NES, and there's so many other games I want. Plus I still need to buy volumes 2 and 3 of the cartoon. I'll probably get it eventually during a Steam sale or something though.

I love the Contra series. Super Contra III is my personal fave. I was not aware that collecting multiple weapon power ups of the same type upgraded the weapon. No wonder I have struggled with this game so much. I just thought it was really freakin hard, which its supposed to be, but serious I would get stuck on the boss at the end of the second level.

Me too man. Contra III is really good. I've never actually beaten that game on hard and seen the ending though. It's insane lol. Leveling up weapons helps out tremendously in this game. It's kind of ridiculous how powerful they are in comparison to your default gun. I probably wouldn't have been able to beat it without that. Thanks for stopping by!

Like I've said before, I've beaten the last boss in the challenge mode but not in the arcade mode, which really rankles me. I still have it listed as unbeaten in my backloggery. It's just so dang hard! But man, I do love this game. The graphics and music, the challenges, all the little extras—it's a fantastic love letter to the series. (You're right about that emulation though. It's just not quite right.)

I'm glad you liked the game. I just wish I'd been able to play the co-op but then you need two copies of it. It sucks that we might not ever see another Contra game like this, but at least we have Contra 4.

I wouldn't worry about that so much Philip. You did beat the dude after all. I didn't have much trouble once I figured out the pattern. Although the first time I fought him I died rather quickly because I only had one life left lol. I'll still be playing the Challenge Mode for a bit trying to unlock all the characters. I noticed the emulation thing right away. The sound is way off. Which is unfortunate, but it's still a cool little bonus.

I wish they would make more Contra games like this too. There was Contra Rebirth on Wii, but I got rid of my Wii. I do hope you like Hard Corps. Uprising. It's kind of similar to this one except with an anime like style. You can level up your characters and do a lot of fancy crap too. Like triple jumping and dashing mid-air.

I played this game so many times. I don't remember finishing it in Normal mode (did it on Easy), but I could reach Stage 5 without dying once, and then I would lose all my lives hahaha. Challenge mode never really interested me. The music is great, and adds to the fun factor of playing the game.

Yeah. I played it a lot. I'll still be doing the Challenge Mode for a while. I stuck with Normal. Stage 5 was pretty rough. Those robots that fly around shooting heat seeking missles and jumping fish were a pain. So I can defintely understand that. I love the music for Contra games. It's basically 80's metal. Cool

The screenshots definitely remind me of the NES Contra.

Indeed the most important thing is dudes in bandanas shooting up aliens.

It's similar in a lot of ways to the early games. It's was basically a tribute to celebrate Contra's 20th anniversary. Don't forget about being shirtless Joe. That's extremely important when fighting legions of alien scum. Cool

I played a ton of Alien Wars on SNES with my friend Mark. I finally got a copy of Contra 4, but haven't played it yet. Wayforward is total quality. You can always rely on them.

Contra III is great, I've come to trust WayForward. They've put out a lot of great games. Even poured some new life into Double Dragon. Which is a series I'm rather fond of despite quite a few mediocre titles over the years.

Love this game! Tough tough tough, but addicting, so it's hard to put down. They nailed it, though, which is why I love it so much. Don't have my own copy of it though, gotta get one sometime.

Me too man. The difficulty didn't bother me too much really. I was expecting that going in. Maybe not quite like that though lol. I got my copy off Amazon for like $20. It was definitely worth that.

I remember seeing Game Trailers review of this game years ago and I was quite amazed by the look and intensity. I'll have this on my wishlist.

Yeah. It has a nice art style. Some of the bosses in particular are impressive. The game is pretty intense. These kinds of games are all about practice and learning patterns though. Quick reflexes helps too.
