I'm usually in the same camp, but I think 3D Land was my favorite Mario game in quite some time. This is indeed more of that formula, but the changes and additions really interest me.
Yeah, theres a lot to be excited about. Its gonna be incredible. I really hope people give it a shot.

not bad. should be fun! if you want an extra challenge, or wanna try something different, try a Nuzlocke run. if you dont know what that is, look it up. its pretty interesting!
definitely. If you dont have em, Heart Gold/ Soul Silver, Platinum, and any game in the Black/White series are good. They give a good range of the series leading up to X and Y.
Great to see so many different opinions. I've never played Legends of Legaia, but that system does look pretty interesting.
I did want to point out an honorable mention that I was really close to choosing. Thats the Battle System(s) for both Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins. Both were card based, and pretty unique to this day. The deck building and combo aspects of that system made it one of my favorite battle systems of all time.

Well, Tales of Phantasia is a little odd in comparison to the current Tales games. Combat is a lot slower, and is more about going up, Attacking, and running back to safety as opposed to stringing combo's together. It takes some getting used to, but its not so bad once you get used to it. That said, anything from Destiny onward would probably be easier to get into. I personally recommend Symphonia for a jumping on point.
