Wow, 50 episodes of NWP!

As I sit here writing this, I’m in shock and a little stunned. We just released the 50th episode of Nerds Without Pants, and I can’t believe we’ve come this far. I’m kind of known for my self-deprecating nature, and anyone who’s ever listened to the show can attest to this. With that said, I’d like to take a little time to toot our own horn, thank some people, and point out my ten favorite episodes we’ve done so far.

So, here’s the thing. I have no idea who listens to this dumb little podcast. Fifty episodes is an accomplishment, but for the first twenty-ish episodes I am pretty sure that fewer than twenty people actually listened on a regular basis (thanks, Michael117). I wish I had the subscriber numbers or how many people download each episode, but I only have some very broad numbers. Since the 1upocalypse we’ve definitely picked up some listeners that comment, share, and participate, and I love you all. I’m on a mission to grow the show over the next year, including improving the production values and editing techniques. For a little behind the scenes peek, I plan on having us do the Skype calls with cameras on to cut down on interrupting. And by “interrupting”, I mean “not steamroll over Patrick on a regular basis”. I plan on getting a better mic and I want to experiment with running the show through a mixing board. Obviously this will require some money and time investment on my part, but I think it will be worth it. As The Tick would say: "It's time to upgrade the apparatus."

I thanked a lot of people on the 50th episode, but I’d like to expand on that here. Of course, this show wouldn’t exist without Patrick and Rob Ottone, who founded the show with me after our stint on PixlTalk. Rob left after episode 17, and even though I think the show has gelled into something different (but still entertaining), I miss Rob’s liberal use of profanity, thoughtful insight, and willingness to bare his soul for comedic effect. I’m happy and thankful to have Angelo on the show, who may have had a little difficulty finding his groove but really brings a level of class to the podcast. Even if his answer to “which is the best Megaman game” is completely wrong.

I’d also like to thank all of the people who listen to NWP. I don’t really know if any of my friends listen to the show unless I specifically ask them to, but in the past year or so it’s been very encouraging to have actual comments and feedback from various PixlBit members or people on Twitter. I love hearing your input, your thoughts on our topics, and getting questions or show ideas. I hope that if you like the show you will let your friends know, especially if we hit a topic that speaks to you. I hope you will feel free to tell me if there are things about an episode (or the show in general) that you dislike. We have our format pretty locked in, but I’m always open to hearing about concerns or constructive criticism.

So yeah, that’s about it. Thank you so much for listening! I wanted to end this rare blog post with my ten favorite NWP episodes, which I have put in chronological order (don’t make me rank my babies). I hope you’ll give them a listen if you are new to the show, or go and explore any of the older episodes that strike your fancy. Fair warning: our audio quality (and my editing work) were pretty rough in the early days, so please know that going in. Here’s to another fifty episodes of Nerds Without Pants!

Episode 6: Vice City A thoughtful look at the vices of gambling and alcohol and drug abuse and their appearances in video games.

Episode 8: Femme Fatales Lisa Eadicicco joins us to talk about important video game heroines, and a little bit about the bullying of female gamers that is so unfortunately common.

Episode 10: Halloween Havoc Rob hosts this Halloween episode where we discuss our greatest fears, and in NWP tradition we tie them all back in to video games.

Episode 15: Potpourri I won't lie--I included this one for the Clone High references and the Tommy Wiseau drops.

Episode 20: Ten Our huge look back at the '90s in video games is a personal favorite of mine due to all the work I put into the music montages.

Episode 23: Don't Worry, Be Nerdy This was Erika Szabo's first appearance on the show, and John Gholson is in the mix to talk about basically being nice to each other and not being jerks on the net.

Episode 38: Jaded Even though Angelo had already been on the show for a good while, I feel this is the episode where we all really began to gel.

Episode 39: The Mushy Stuff What can I say? I love talking romance in video games, and our funny/tragic tales of lost love are epic.

Episode 42: Crystals It's a 3 hour Final Fantasy podcast featuring Erika Szabo. 'Nuff said.

Episode 46: Community Planning Our first community-run episode was a smashing success, and we will be doing part two for episode 51! Details to come very soon.

I enjoyed the podcast the few times I listened to it...eventually though the novelty of podcast-listening just wore off for me.  Had nothing at all to do with the quality of NWP...i'm just not as much of a cast-listener as I'd have liked.

Of all the gaming podcasts I've heard though, NWP is the only one I'd ever recommend.

50 episodes is a milestone for sure.  Mucho props to the NWP crew!!

I'm not really into podcasts, but 50 episodes is quite a feat!  Congrats and keep at it.  Looking forward to episode 100!

I used to be heavy into this one podcast back 2007 or 2008-ish called "Infendo Radio".  I hung on for close to a year I think, but eventually fell off the wagon.  Since then, podcasts just really didn't catch my fancy. I sometimes listened to Retronauts on 1Up if the subject was interesting, but sometimes they seemed kinda snooty and bored with their jobs.

So when I came over to Pixlbit last year I wasn't too interested in checking out Podcasts.  But I eventually started listening to some of them, and I noticed that something kept drawing back to NWP in particular.  Maybe by the 3rd episode I tuned into, it hit me-- "These guys are interesting and talk about stuff that actually matters to me!" Personally, I enjoy the fact that your subjects may not always be directly game-releated, but you find a way to figure in gaming into the show somehow anyway.

Bravo guys.  Here's to another 50.

My goal with NWP since episode 1 has been to A: have a show that can be enjoyed at anytime and isn't dated by new releases or news and B: have topics that always deal with video games in some way. Beyond the fact that we're a podcast on a gaming website, I usually tie everything I talk about into video games anyway, so as long as I host this show that's how we're gonna do it!

I literally couldn't be more excited for production improvements and the future of the show. It's great to see you guys still passionate about this thing and looking forward to making it even better. When you guys are excited about it and happy to be putting on the show, it's fun to listen to.

Congrats on making it to 50! I've been listening for a little while now and really enjoying the show. I haven't heard most of your top picks, so I might try to rectify that. Keep up the good work! On a side note, it was listening to you and Patrick talk about comics which compelled me to hit up my local library and start reading comics again, so that's something lol

You have no idea how happy you're going to make Patrick. I'm going to link him to your blog. So nice to hear that we got you curious again, and you picked three of my favorite Batman arcs, especially The Long Halloween. In addition to the New 52 stories (except for Zero Year), I'd recommend No Man's Land. It's quite an investment (5 thick trades!), but well worth it.

Right now I'm just sticking with whatever the library has because it's free Smile I'll keep an eye out for No Man's Land. Hard to remember what they have because it's a little different every time I go. I'm actually trying to branch out from Batman a little, so I'm reading Watchmen at the moment. So far so good!

I've said it before and I'll say it a thousand times more: you can't go wrong with Invincible. I think it's far and away the best super hero comic of the past decade. Granted, I haven't read every super hero comic of the past decade, but it deserves way more attention and recognition than it gets, especially considering it comes from the creator of The Walking Dead!

Congrats to you and the crew! Your passion for the show is really apparent and whenever I am able to listen, I like it a lot.

I also really like seeing a blog from you. I love Julian word spawn!

Wait That's what you guys talk about?!?! I'm not one for podcasts but it sounds like youc an be pretty cheeky with your content. Don't know how you can work in Tommy Wiseau in a gamer podcast. I guess I need to check this outs .still never understood the title though.

While I am adamant about keeping our main topic gaming related in some way, we talk about all sorts of stuff.

As far as the title, it goes way back to when we were on the PixlTalk podcast. We used to record on Sunday night and all of us were pretty much ready for bed. I think Rob mentioned one time that he was podcasting naked, and later on Patrick had the famous line "I'm wearing shorts, and those aren't pants". It became a running gag, and even though we had a couple other title ideas when we got our own show, Nerds Withou Pants just seemed right.

Plus it abbreviates to NWP which we all thought was badass, hence the NwO-style logo in this blog post.
