I think FF14 is different than other MMOs in that it does have game design equivalent to a single player jrpg, or rather, rpgs that have MMO like designs like Xenoblade or Dragon Age Inquisition or FF12 and FF15. I think I got to the level cap of the original game in like 1 or 2 months of just playing occasionally and on weekends. I mostly leveled by grinding dungeons.
this reminds me of something...okay. like in uncharted 4 the game does a good job of building the relationship between sam and nate, where sam is showing nate how to do indiana jones style exploration in tutorials, especially climbing with ropes. Then, later Sam shows up to assist nate reach hard to reach places with ropes and it made sense because they were introducing a new game mechanic and had sam showing you how to use it. But then there is a thing with nates wife in the story where he lied and left here behind and after she finds out, she just forgives and forgets and works with him in the last missions to save sam who basically used nate, and then nate ditches the wife again to save sam. It was really odd because the whole game built on relationship with sam but the wife was just pushed into the background and neglected, but magically they have a happy ending in like one movie cut scene? umm...what? It made me laugh.
I just remember Ludonarrative discussion surrounding Uncharted games more. I'm sure it's been used or misused before for other games, again because the player actions contradict character actions the developer intended. I've seen it used for games like tomb raider, bioshock and fallout. Either you leave a high body count behind or go on side missions ignoring the main problem for a long time, like in Zelda or Skyrim. Im not sure thats even the right word, but the jarring effect of player actions vs. character actions.
yep. I don't hate TLOU or Uncharted series by any means. It's just that game play hasn't really evolved much past arcade shooter / level grind and it's probably because of dev cost and money/marketing requires devs to stay safe and go with the familiar-- thus nathan absorbing grenade blasts and bullets with no armor. LOL. I think that dissonance discussion in gaming came up around Uncharted games originally.
my main issue with naughty dog is the contradictions in their own messaging. they bring criticism on themselves. that they insist that their games are trying to acheive some form of higher art when they are just making games. I'm ignoring the controversies. As an example, I just finished Uncharted 4. Nathan Drake is way overpowered and invincible in game play and completly breaks with the movie version Nathan in the cut scenes which try to make him more "realistic". As a game it's fine, but there is a very big disconnect between the movie and gameplay, and the same happens in Last of Us 1. I think I fall somwhere between JimSterling who said the game is really fun to play and kind of ruins the seriousness the devs are trying to demonstrate, while Noah Caldwell says its a very directed cinematic experience with restrained game mechanics to force this. I still want to play it though. The toxic response to games is pretty exhausting.
okay. I'll look into it. I adore zombie games, but honestly would like a different take on end of the world will be hell, instead of more optimism like Star Trek. Hopepunk is the only thing I was familiar with.
I guess Im in that rare group that prefers 8 to 7&9. I think that at the time the game came out I was more into anime and it had that high school anime thing going for it like the current persona games. It also looked better, with the character models and visuals, than 7. I didn't appreciate 9 until much after it released, mainly because I was more into the cyberpunk dystopia aesthetic than traditional fantasy.
Isn't it possible to play 8 without summons? I thought that was a thing in the game. You can overpower your characters and not rely on summons. I have to play it again some time when its on sale again. Do you like the soundtrack at least? Its very odd music.
i watched a video highlighting eshop sales and this game received a lot of praise. I'm very interested in buying it.
TLOU1 was a game I skipped on first release, mainly because I don't really like Naughty Dog games and I was over playing directed single player games at the time. I'm not sure the polarizing reviews are encouraging.
I'm curious if there are any post-apacolyptic games where people don't turn into murderers, but seem more optimistic? I remember a term 'hopepunk' being used a while back.
Im suprised to see people love the game on console. I don't want to play these style of games with a controller at all. I played the original on PC when it launched. I'm suprised baldurs gate 3 is more like dragon age 2 now.
The death animations in the new TR games really put me off. I thought they were a bit too gratuitous. I'm a hypocrite because I love horror games like Resident Evil, but I just expect light hearted exploration adventure from TR. I just want puzzles and elaborate tombs to climb around in. I need to play the new TR series now since I'm finishing off my back log.
