Cary is Looking Forward in 2016!

Well we’re into 2016 now, and with the 2015 Game of the Year stuff out of the way, it’s time to look forward to games that will be coming out this year!  So here’s a list of games that I’m personally looking forward to.  Now this isn’t a full list, since some stuff hasn’t even been announced yet since it’s so early.  And my list does tend to lean toward the Nintendo side, because I don’t have a PS4 or Xbox One yet.  But one of the things I’ll be looking forward to is finding out if those systems will have more games that interest me this year.  It could very well happen, you never know!  Well, at any rate, here are some games I’m looking forward to in 2016!

LEGO Dimensions Level Packs (Wii U)

LEGO Dimensions came out last year, but not all the Level Packs I wanted.  Some got carried over into this year, and one of them was Ghostbusters. That’s one of my favorite movies of all time, so I’m looking forward to playing more of it in LEGO Dimensions.  The pack comes with one Ghostbuster (not sure who), a little LEGO Ecto-1, and a Ghost Trap.  I think that LEGO Ghostbusters could be a whole game!  There is a character pack that has Slimer, but it doesn’t unlock anything in the game besides the character, so I won’t be getting it.  The other LEGO pack is Midway Arcade Classics, which I’m really looking forward to seeing.  That pack comes with an Arcade Guy, an arcade cabinet, and a car that looks like the one from Spy Hunter!  The Ghostbuster pack will be out in late January, and the Midway one will be out in the spring.

LEGO Marvel Avengers (Wii U)

And speaking of LEGOs, another LEGO game is coming out later in January, and it’s LEGO Marvel Avengers.  There’s already been one LEGO Marvel game, so it’ll be interesting to see how different this one is.  It’s a separate game from LEGO Dimensions, and I hope I get to review it when it comes out!

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS)

I’m a little leery about this one since the last two Mario RPGs were not as good (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Paper Mario: Sticker Star).  But I’ll probably still check this one out anyway because it’s a crossover title between the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, and that seems interesting.  At the end of January, I plan to write a blog where I rate every Mario RPG, so be on the lookout for that.

Final Fantasy Explorers (3DS)

It looks like the Final Fantasy take on Monster Hunter.  I’m not sure I’ll like this game or not, but the nods to the classic FF games interest me, so I might check it out.  I just don’t know yet.  Speaking of which, Final Fantasy World on the PS4 is one of the few games on the console that looks interesting to me, and that may come out this year.  As for Kingdom Hearts 3, I don’t think it’ll be out until next year, knowing how they are with the franchise.

Mighty No. 9 (Wii U)

This game is FINALLY coming out in February (hopefully).  I’ve been calling it “Not Mega Man” because that’s essentially what it is.  It’s made by one of the folks who helped create Mega Man, but he left Capcom.  So he made this game instead.  Hopefully it’ll be as much fun and addicting as Mega Man is!

Project X-Zone 2 (3DS)

This strategy RPG really isn’t that good, gameplay wise.  But its strength relies on the cast of characters, all of which come from other game companies like Namco, SEGA, and Capcom!  The original game in the series was called Namco X Capcom and it was on the PS2 and never came to the US.  But the next game was on the 3DS, and it did come out over here.  I probably wouldn’t have gotten the third game in the series, but it does have Phoenix Wright in it, so I’ll have to get it!  I’m a sucker for anything Phoenix Wright related.  I’m only disappointed that the new game doesn’t seem to have Tron Bonne and the Servebots in it, as they are some of my favorite Capcom Mega Man characters!

Mega Man Legacy Collection (3DS)

And speaking of Mega Man, in a couple of months we’ll be getting this collection of the first six Mega Man titles!  I already have it reserved so I can get the gold Mega Man amiibo!  I’m only disappointed because the last Mega Man collection we got had 8 games in the series, plus two arcade titles.  And this one just has the six on the NES.  But oh well.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (Wii U)

Twilight Princess on the Wii was actually one of my least favorite Zelda games.  It was just too dark and brown and muddy and smeary.  Usually bad graphics don’t bother me in a game, but in this case, the dull visuals sometimes made it hard to see where you can and can’t go.  But however, Twilight Princess had some of the coolest Zelda dungeons, and Princess Zelda in that game was just plain awesome.  So I’m willing to give this one a second chance, and maybe the HD graphics will make things look a little sharper, too!  Plus, I reserved the special edition that comes with the Link Wolf Amiibo, so I’m all set!

Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

I’m not a big fan of Star Fox, but I certainly don’t HATE the series and I’ve played all the games.  So I’m willing to give this one a try when it finally comes out this year.  I’m a little worried about the controls, and I have a feeling they just delayed it so they can add Amiibo support.  But hey, I could be wrong!

Pokken Tournament (Wii U)

I like the idea of a Pokemon fighting game, and I think it’s interesting that this game was made by the same folks who do Tekken.  I’m not very good at fighting games, but I’m willing to give this one a try anyway.

Odin Sphere (PS3)

Odin Sphere was a 2-D hack and slash game by VanillaWare on the PS2, and I loved it.  It had problems, for sure, but I just enjoyed the characters and graphics and even the item management system was fun.  They are remaking it with a Nordic subtitle that there is no way I’m going to remember how to spell.  It’s going to be for the PS4 and Vita, but I’ve also seen that they’ll put it on the PS3 as well.  So I may check it out on the PS3 if it does.

Digimon: Cyber Sleuths (PS Vita)

There is a new Digimon game coming this year from Namco Bandai with the subtitle Cyber Sleuths.  It says it’s coming to the PS4 here, but in Japan it’s also for the Vita.  And I just got a Vita for Christmas, so I’d like to play it on that.  So hopefully Namco will put it on the Vita in the US as well.  They usually do, so here’s hoping.  I don’t know what kind of game Cyber Sleuths is supposed to be, but it looks…interesting.

Speaking of games from Japan that haven’t been announced in the US yet, but I hope they do, Capcom announced and/or released two Phoenix Wright games in Japan on the 3DS last year.  The first was Phoenix Wright X Sherlock Holmes, which actually stars Phoenix’s ancestor, and the other is Phoenix Wright 6.  I don’t know if Capcom will release them in the US or not, but I’ll certainly be looking forward to an announcement.  Here’s hoping!

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (Wii U)

The neat thing about indie games is that sometimes they come out of nowhere and take you by surprise.  And sometimes they take forever to come out.  The latter is the case with this new Shantae game, which I think was on my “Cary is Looking Forward in 2015” blog last year!  So hopefully it’ll come out in 2016 because I’m a big fan of the Shantae games!

PixlCross (Wii U)

And speaking of indie games, this is a picross title that’ll be out on PC and Wii U.  I’m hoping to play it on Wii U because I just prefer playing games on consoles instead of computers. I’m just weird that way I guess.  Anyway, the neat thing about PixlCross is that it’s made by some people I know, and they also help run a web site I like to visit called PixlBit.  Maybe you’ve heard of it? :)  I hope I get to review it!

Conclusions

And that’s all I’m looking forward to right now that I know of.  I’m sure as the year goes along and events like E3 come and go, there will be more games announced for me to look forward to.  In the comments section, let me know what you think of my picks, and tell me which games YOU’RE looking forward to in 2016! Later!  --Cary

I'm looking forward to the release of PixlCross as well! And maybe if things go really well, we'll actually have a sequel to that on the market later in the year in Color!

Anyway, as soon as I get that greenlight from Nintendo, you can bet I'll send you a code for review! Cool

A sequel?  That sounds exciting!

Out of these I'm definitely most excited for Pokken. I'm terrible at fighting games too, but you know me and Pokemon. Also will pick up TPHD and am very interested to hear your thoughts on Mario and Luigi

It took me a while to figure out what you meant by TPHD. :)

LEGO is LEGO is LEGO to me. I own LEGO avengers on PS4 cause was on sale for 6bucks. Have yet to play it.

That Mario/Luigi game sounds cool. I likedPaper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games have always been well-reviewed. I liked the humor in Paper Mario and hear M&L is even better for comedy.

I'm excited for Mighty No. 9 as well. Definite buy for my PS4. I have Keiji Inafune's autograph from when he was at SGC.

Mega Man Legacy Collection came out last year on consoles, didn't it? I know I saw it on PS4 for like $15. They've added some stuff to update it and give some history, but to me the 6 original games aren't really enough when there are other and cheaper ways to get them.

I didn't like the muddiness of TP, either. Maybe they made it so muddy as an elaborate joke regarding the fact their game was abbreviated "TP." Tee hee. I'm excited for the new Zelda coming out more than anything else on Wii U, but I'm waiting until E3 to see if they'll say it'll also be on NX.

I love Star Fox proper and am hoping they stick to the on-rails shooter core of those games, but ... not holding my breath.

Pokken Tournament is what I was wishing Pokemon Stadium was as a kid. Cool that Namco is handling it.

Digimon is still going?! Wow. What about Yu-Gi Oh? Monster Rancher? What show from my childhood HASN'T stuck around?

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero I didn't realize was upcoming as opposed to out now. Something to look forward to.

I prefer consoles too, but PixlCross I'd play on PC since I don't own a Wii U. Look forward to your review.

I'll probably do my own blog of upcoming stuff in 2016 I want.

Well you can't own LEGO Avengers on PS4 because it's not out yet.  You might have LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, which is probably pretty much the same game I bet.  That's how LEGO games are! :)

I think Mega Man Legacy Collection is already out on Steam digitally, but I don't know of any consoles that have it yet.  The 3DS will have it in March, and the Wii U should follow.

TP...ew.  :)

Yup, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh are still around.  Monster Rancher...not so much.  Monster Rancher was made by Tecmo, and the only thing Tecmo seems to do now are Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games.

Correct on LEGO, but I definitely remembered MM Legacy Collection being released last year. It was released August 25, 2015 for PS4.

Yeah, I didn't think Monster Rancher was still going. I'd at least seen other products recently for the others. I still remember that intro with the PSX, but never really watched that show.

Cary Woodham

That must've been a real quiet release for the PS4 MM game, because I didn't hear anything about it.  But then, I don't pay as much attention to PS4 releases since I don't have one.  I hope the game comes out on PS3 and Wii U as well, as I'd rather play it on a bigger console.

The Monster Rancher cartoon was AWFUL!

I rarely watched it, so I'll take your word.

It wasn't too too quiet, I remember seeing a few  reviews for it, including IGN and Screwattack among others. It was also released for Xbox One and PC the same day as PS4.

However, I think you're planning on getting the physical copy, which releases for those platforms and 3DS this year. Last year was all digital stuff. I don't see anything for Wii U though, which is odd given that it's a bunch of NES games ... http://megaman.capcom.com/

I hope it releases for PS3 and Wii U as well, since that's what I have set up right now. :)

It looks like twilight princess comes out in March.  Wow.  I can't wait. I like that game a lot. I'm gonna order the amiibo one too.  It will be my first amiibo.

Cary Woodham

01/13/2016 at 08:43 PM

Aw, your first amiibo.  Better preorder that game now before they run out of the special edition!

I've already pre-ordered Paper Jam. I hope it's good like Partners in Time. i loved that game. Also, Odin's Sphere. I have the first one and haven't played it yet, but love the art style of Vanillaware games. I'm getting that day-one this time and playing it right away.

Cary Woodham

01/14/2016 at 08:42 AM

If you pre-ordered Paper Jam from GameStop, you're supposed to get some papercraft figures as a pre-order bonus.

Did you ever play Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story?  I thought that one was even better than Partners in Time.  You should try it if you haven't, as I think Bowser's Inside Story is probably the best of the Mario & Luigi games.  I did like the babies in Partners in Time, though.  So cute.

I'm going to have to make sure I get those figures.

I totally missed Inside Story for some reason. i so want to go back and play that.

I never get my hopes up with pre-order bonuses from GameStop.  Sometimes they get them, sometimes they don't.  And sometimes I get a bonus and don't even know it!  I really only pre-order games so I can just pick them up at that one spot because I can't really go all over town looking for games I want.

Bowser's Inside Story is probably the best of the Mario & Luigi games.  It's probably the closest thing we'll get to Bowser having his own game.  It's really fun to control him, and the 2-D areas inside him are neat as well.  And the game isn't too long, but not too short either.

KnightDriver

01/16/2016 at 03:42 AM

I don't care much for preoder bonuses, but once I know about them, I want 'em. I've had pretty good luck with Gamestop in the last few years. Before that though, it was really touch and go.

Cary Woodham

01/16/2016 at 12:57 PM

My one big disappointment was when I pre-ordered Me and My Katamari on PSP, because GameStop said I'd get a free Katamari PSP case that looked really cool.  When I went to pick up the game, they were like, "What are you talking about?"  It took me a while to go to a GameStop after that.  I've found that the GameStops inside malls are not as good as the ones outside in strip malls and such.  Kind of weird, but that's what I've noticed anyway.

KnightDriver

01/16/2016 at 01:52 PM

Gamestop used to be really bad with that stuff. I never trusted them and never pre-ordered for that reason, but I tried it again a few years ago, and they've gotten better. If I get shafted again though, I'll stop pre-ordering.

Cary Woodham

01/17/2016 at 09:43 AM

I bet the time that you felt GameStop was bad was the time I wasn't shopping there either.  But I have gone back to them in the last few years.  I really only pre-order because I can just pick it up at one store and not have to go all over the place if they are out of stock.

I don't know if I even want to play Mighty No.9 since the behind the scenes drama and ordeal killed any excitement I could create, together with some kinda dubious changes. Of course, don't let my opinion influence you and i'll read your review to see how it turns out.

I'll plan in buying Mega Man Legacy Collection on PC and hopefully it'll create another collection with other games of the Classic saga.

I'm pretty damn excited about TP HD. From what i've seen from the trailer, it seems the remake will downgrade a bit the murkiness to make it clearer, and as someone with the unpopular opinion of liking the original graphics, it looks quite better. The game itself is awesome BTW :)

I'm really excited about Star Fox Zero too.

Out of this list, i'm looking forward to No Man's Sky, although i'm cautious since it's very posible it won't live to the expectations and/or at worst, become a disaster.

Cary Woodham

01/21/2016 at 04:26 PM

You know, I haven't really paid any attention to any drama behind the making of Mighty No. 9, but then, I usually don't pay attention to that kind of stuff.  I just play the games when they come out and try to enjoy them, usually.
