Character Builds!

Builds; I fucking love them! And not only are they fun, but they can also offer great replay value to games. I love making different builds and testing them to see what they can do and how they can be worked, as well as testing them for their strengths and weaknesses. With that said, let me tell you all about some of the builds I’ve done before and also what I’m currently working on!

Katniss Build:

This was a build I did in Dark Souls whenever I was wrapping up the rest of my achievements. I used my Wife’s knowledge of The Hunger Games and I made a character accordingly. Utilizing a Bow, Dagger, and extremely light armor (No helmet of course, that doesn’t fit her character), I set forth in an epic quest of doom. As awesome as it sounds, it was really excruciating whenever I first started through the game. I was so familiar with the typical Sword and Shield build that I found it extremely hard to get used to having to dodge instead of block with my shield. It took a while, but the challenge made it feel like I was playing the game for the first time again, despite being my 4th or 5th run through the game.

Pros: Taking everything down from a distance.

Cons: Whenever enemies closed that distance forcing me to dodge and shoot on the fly.

Belmont Build:

This was another Dark Souls build I tried simply because I was bored. This build is awful and I must recommend that no one ever ever tries it. Seriously, whips suck in this game. The worst part though was actually trying to get the first whip in the game. As soon as I hit Lordran, I ran down to Blighttown as a measly level 11 scrub, and I promptly had my ass handed to me on a silver platter over and over again. But once I got the whip, I equipped the Leather Armor and utilized Faith-based magic. The reasoning behind the Faith-like build was because it felt the most holy of all of the magics, so it felt more right than wrong.

Pros: Feeling like a Belmont

Cons: Everything. This was ludicrous and ridiculous and I recommend you never ever try it because the whips are awful in this game.

Face-Fister! Build:

This build is awesome.

BASICALLY….. I punch EVERYTHING in Skyrim.

Bandits. People. Orphans. Goats. Bears. Dragons. Fuck ‘em all, I punch the shit out of them. Haha

I literally have been playing this build for over 30 hours and I have yet to use a weapon or any destructive magic. I just equip Heavy Armor, and I punch everything in sight, and so far it’s been working out really really well!

By the way, this build was completely inspired by the YouTuber Robbaz.

Pros: Being a badass and punching a dragon in the face!!

Cons: When you fight a dragon and it has nowhere to land. It simply stays in air and breathes fire onto you, and there’s nothing you can do.

So there you have it, just a glimpse at some of more obscure builds I’ve done before.

But speaking of Builds, this leads to me a side-topic…

Last week I was asked if I ever considered doing a walk-through of Dark Souls, and after some deliberation I think I’m going to do it as a BvsC thing. But… What build should I use? I’m thinking of doing a Bow-Build, simply so everyone gets the walkthrough portion of the video, but I don’t ruin any strategies, because this game is MEANT to be hard as hell and I don’t want to give anyone the upper hand. Plus, there really are no other bow-build-walkthroughs on YouTube, so perhaps I could be the first. Regardless though, let me know what you think and what type of build you would like to see and I’ll try to work my magic for you all!

And please don’t suggest a Belmont Build either….. I’ll find you and punch you in the ear.

can you defeat dark souls just by using a bow?  that's insane. You should do a walkthrough. I don't know anybody who knows Dark Souls as well, and my brother is a Dark Souls fiend.

I did it with a bow and dagger before, and it was absolutely crazy. It's amazing how changing from a sword/shield build to a bow build can completely change your overall playthrough experience. It was really tough to get used to, but I felt like a bad-ass whenever I finally managed to complete it!

I've never done a 'fist-based' build before though.. Perhaps that'll be something for me to look into? Using a Cestus or Claws... Maybe dual-claw Wolverine Build!? That would be awesome... lol

But seriously considering doing a Bow/Dagger walkthrough. The Bow is definitely tough, but the Dagger can also be used to maybe embark some of my knowledge of hand-to-hand combat for anyone look for tips and tricks.

That is crazy that you have done multiple playthroughs. I'm still on my first and I'm at least 60 hours in. Just yesterday I had been no guiding the whole thing but I finally caved. I was also playing without any assistance from other players. I do have to say it is still one of my favorite games of all time. Haven't played anything as addicting since Diablo 2.

Dark Souls is probably my all-time favorite game ever!

Seriously.. I just texted a good friend of mine about 5 minutes ago and gave him a step-by-step tutorial on a boss.. So if you need anything or need advice/tips, just send me a PM and I'll get you set on your way!

Thanks I don't want to bother you but I will definitely taking you up on that offer. The difficulty is just something you don't find in modern games. LOVE IT!!!!!

Trust me, it's absolutely no bother at all! I love that game dearly and I'm always willing to help someone out. I have it on both PS3 and 360, so if you need summoned help as well just give me a hollar and I'll see what I can do!

Thats nuts, more than I could ever ask for. Guardian Angel in Dark Souls. Never thought it could be possible.

I do what I can to get my Dark Souls fix in!

Seriously.. It's all I played for about two years though. I ended up with a grand total of over 300 hours logged in to 7 different characters, each character on the 2nd-5th ng+, all spread across Xbox and PS3. It was rather ridiculous, but I loved every moment of it!

That is awesome though. Nothing beats finding a game that you want to go back to so many times even after beating it. After sinking so many hours into it, its like your child. Especially with all your characters you have a small family going.

Face fister for the win. Take that, goat!

Face Fister build is actually a lot more fun than any of the other builds I've done. It amazes me whenever I'm fighting a bandit, and I suddenly body-slam them into oblivion without notice. It's great!

The knuckle build in Skyrim sounds pretty cool. I may have to try that out. Does it count as one or two handed?

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/08/2013 at 01:05 PM

Actually... It counts as Heavy Armor. And the heavier the armor you wear the better your attacks are!

I'm running around right now in Blades armor set and I'm wrecking stuff. I can't wait to see the damage from Daedric and Dragon Bone armor!

PLUS! Legendary Game Update just came out today, so I'm really excited to try that!

Really? That doesn't make sense lol. Maybe in the next game they'll have a more fleshed out martial artist build.

That would be amazing! I was just talking to someone else about Bethesda needing a Hand-to-Hand build for Skyrim. They had the perks and stuff for it in Fallout!

Seriously love character builds; I did a blog on this subject awhile back. I made a Rick Grimes build in Fallout 3 that has been a blast, limiting myself armor and weapons-wise to character-friendly options. It adds so much creativity, and allows for such a unique play experience.

My girlfriend would flip shit over the Katniss build in Dark Souls, seriously awesome idea man! And as for the punching Skyrim character, someone needs to invent a "Street Fighter Ken's Uppercut" mod so you can knock those Alduin's scaly ass right out of the sky.

Great feature dude.

I remember you telling me all about your Rick Grimes build in Fallout and I was hoping you'd catch this blog to see my Face Fister build! lol

And I'm thinking of doing another Katniss Build, but more Bow-Based and less Dagger. Dagger is great for tight spots and to show hand-to-hand combat techniques though!

This reminds me, I need to get back to reading Catching Fire. I think the bow-build/Katniss thing is a good idea.

They were cool books, but after a while I personally felt disconnected from Katniss.. I liked the books and all, I just didn't like the main character sadly.

But so far, the general consensus through comments and PMs seem to be in favor of a Bow build. Thank God no one wants to see a whip build.. I'd kill myself.. lol

That would be cool if you did a walkthrough. I know very little about Dark Souls, but I'm highly curious. So any info from an expert on the game would come in handy.

How many build options are there? Can you make a midget with a little sword like Bilbo Baggins? Are there any claw weapons to make Wolverine? How about a cross-bow and poncho to make Daryll from Walking Dead? Maybe dual wielding swords like Spartacus, or Spear and shield like Leonitis from 300 movie. Is it possible to make a Kratos charachter with dual swords. Maybe a Jedi, are there an glowing swords or enchanments for Jedis?

Oddly... ALL of those builds can be done in Dark Souls!

I may have to try and test a few!

My brother Jeff only punched things in Skyrim.  He looked like Popeye in the game doing that.

It's actually a lot of fun until you come across a dragon with nowhere to land, then you're screwed.

Its a shame the Belmont build didn't work out, thats one I would have wanted to try. I really need to get back on this game. I was using the wanderer class, maybe not the best choice for my first play through. But I liked the idea of someone who was fast on their feet.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/09/2013 at 06:06 AM

The Belmont build DID work, but unfortunately the whips are so underpowered that it kind of ruined the experience. It definitely upped the difficulty quite a bit though!

And one of my favorite things in regards to the Souls games are that you can take any character and level them and mold them into whatever you want them to be. There's been a couple times I started out as a Knight and ended up being something completely different like and Archer or a Mage!

Maybe you should republish your Dark Souls Death Log on here. That used to make me laugh, especially with Court's drawings.

Perhaps.... I'll do another one to coincide with the walk-through?

Glad you got a chuckle out of it though Smile

I typically use one of two builds if I want to do something inspired by other media

1: Garrett

I use this build if I want to play slowly, quietly, and with an emphasis on stealth. Generally speaking, I emphasize archery, light armor, and short sword work. No shield. If magic is involved, it's emphasis is on creating illusions or distractions, making me harder to detect, and things of that nature. I also do whatever I can to make my character nimble and quiet, while stealing everything not nailed down.

2: Chuck Norris

This is my "you're all gonna die" build. Emphasis on unarmed combat and guns / explosives. no fooling around with anything that won't cause broken bones or horrible burning death.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

04/09/2013 at 03:32 PM

Those are amazing! I've never tried a Garrett build, but it sounds legit!

And the Chuck Norris build sounds like my Face-Fister build, and it's fun as hell! Now if I could only find a perk for a round-house kick in Skyrim's skill tree....

lol!

Thanks! I can crush the main game with ease, but when it comes to PvP, it's usually either a hit or a miss.

Well thats a downer that the whips sucks, I actually like using them as weapons but no games really offer that option. Its normally swords, daggers, guns, or staffs. I might be a sinner in your eyes for saying this but I think I really need to give the dark souls/demon souls games a try. Everyone has good things to say about them and Im all over here like "I like cake" or some other random mess.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

SINNER!!!

lol, just kidding.

It's all good. They're all great games, but they're definitely not for everybody. I'll be uploading a Walk-through here relatively soon, so stay tuned and you can check out Dark Souls in it's entirely!
