Game Review Workout!

All right folks.  I imagine some of you may have gained some weight after last week’s Thanksgiving feasts.  You might have a little bit of a belly or whatever.  Well, I’ve got a workout regimen of game reviews for you to read that’ll make you super buff in no time!  If you click on the GamerDad.com review links and maybe even post a comment or two, you’ll be really strong!

Skylanders Imaginators (PS3)

So this is basically just a regular Skylanders game with a character creation mode.  But when I was a kid, I would draw up all sorts of Pac-Man mazes and made-up Mega Man bosses, so I imagine kids would do that today with Skylanders.  Like with what Activision did with Nintendo last year, Sony got the better treatment this year as there are also Skylander figures of Crash Bandicoot and Dr. Neo Cortex.  I’d like to get them, but I haven’t seen them in stores anywhere.  Have any of you seen them?  Anyway, since I write reviews of mostly kid-centric games at GamerDad, and Skylanders is a big kid franchise, I put a lot of effort into my main Skylander game reviews.  So if you read just one review in this bunch, make it this one, please.  Kids deserve good games for them, too!  Also, I put a blurb in there about the new Skylanders cartoon on Netflix.  I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t happened sooner, like on Nickelodeon or something.  It’s a fairly decent CG video game based cartoon. At least it’s better than the last CG video game cartoons I’ve seen (Sonic Boom and Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures).  Crash Bandicoot even makes an appearance in one of the episodes, although I don’t know if die-hard Crash fans will like what they did to him here…

Playing With Power: Nintendo NES Classics (Book)

It’s a pretty nice book about the history of Nintendo published games on the NES, and they have strategies for select games as well.  I think they released it to correspond to the release of the NES Classic Edition.  I liked how they used art, maps, and assets from old Nintendo Power magazines, as it brought back memories for me.  But the book does have flaws and could’ve used a bit of editing here and there.  I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with how Nintendo handled the release of the NES Classic Edition.  Why did they have to make it so hard to find?  I haven’t gotten one yet, sadly.

Pokémon Visual Companion: 2nd Edition (Book)

This book chronicles the adventures of Ash and his Pokémon and friends from the cartoon.  It’s actually the same book I reviewed three years ago, but they added a section on the new season based on X and Y.  So I mostly focused on that this time around.  If you love the Pokémon cartoon, you’ll want to check out this book.

New Mario Series Amiibo

Just another look at my newest additions to my amiibo collection.  This time it’s of Mario figures.  The cool thing is the Boo one glows in the dark.  I tried to take a picture of it for my review, but it didn’t turn out very well.

Runbow: Deluxe Edition (Wii U)

This is a physical disc version of the popular indie game that came out last year.  But they also included all the DLC and bonus characters in it, like Shantae!  I think it’s cool they made it a disc game, and it’s one of the better indie games out there.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (3DS)

While I don’t think the Sonic Boom games and cartoon were quite AS BAD as everyone else made them out to be, they still weren’t that great.  At least this one is much better than the last 3DS Sonic Boom game, though.

Two or More (iPad)

And last is this iPad puzzler.  You’ve probably played a game like this before and just hadn’t realized it.  It’s one of those games where you tap on colored blocks of the same color and they disappear.  But in this one you have to drag your finger over the blocks so it’s a bit harder and more annoying.  And the game doesn’t even have a title screen!

Conclusions

And that’s all for now!  Hope you enjoyed my game review workout!  You should all have super big muscles if you read them all!  Maybe.  Thanks for reading and commenting.  By the way, I am now an owner of a PS4.  Got a good deal on it during Black Friday.  Haven’t had a chance to hook it up yet, though.  Later!  --Cary

More of the same with Skylanders is ok with me. I think they're really fun. What do the sensei do exactly in the game, I wonder? Do you play as them, or do they go on the portal with your created character and interact in some way?

Oh the senseis are just like regular Skylanders except they have different fighting styles and moves.  You can use their elements and fighting styles to unlock special areas and such in the game, which can unlock more parts to use for your created Skylanders when completed.  But I think they mostly put them in the game so you can see some of the fighting styles you can use for your created Skylanders, like brawler, magician, gunner, knight, etc.

Allright. Cool. I'm excited to play it and unlock all those parts for the Frankenstein's monster of a Skylander I'm going to make.

Yeah like I said in my review, the character creation isn't as robust as say, Soul Calibur 4 or 5, but there is still a lot you can do.  I made a She-Hulk like lady with a librarian head who says "I like pizza" a lot. And she had watermelon shoulder pads. And brass knuckles made out of candy.  And made 8-bit sound effects when she jumped.  Those are all things you can edit.

Ha ha. I want to see that.

If I weren't so lazy, I'd take a picture and post it for you.  But it's really not that impressive of a character.  Just looks like a really strong, green lady mostly.

I'm excited to create one now. I'm sure it's no Saints Row character creator, but it still sounds fun.

I think the only thing about Saints Row that interests me is the character creator.

The creator was free on Xbox Live at one point just before SRIV came out. Best part is seeing your character in every cutscene.

Yeah the gameplay of Saints Row didn't interest me, but that character creation seemed pretty robust.  Speaking of seeing funny characters in cutscenes, it was always funny seeing the main character in Dead Rising wearing a Servebot head throughout the story.

Dead Rising is so funny, but I can't stand the time limits. I want to craft crazy items, wear stupid outfits and fight zombies, but no time limits, please!

I've found that Dead Rising is more fun to watch than to play anyway.

Atari Flashback vol 1 and 2

Gravity Rush Remastered (and the sequel coming next year)

And also the opportunity to review games for it.  Let me know if there are any others you think I would like.

Yeah once I get my PS4 hooked up I'll have to rummage through the PSN store.  I know some other downloadable titles coming next year I'll want to check out include Sonic Mania and the Wonder Boy 3 remake.  And Capcom just announced Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, so that's cool.
