Valentine Reviews

Hey folks.  Got another batch of games I’ve reviewed recently over at GamerDad.com.  Please click on the links and read as many as you can and maybe even post a comment or a like or two.  I’d really appreciate it.  Especially please read my PAX South articles, as I took a lot of pictures.  I thought about participating in the blog a day thing in February, but it’s just easier for me to write a few big blogs a month instead of little ones every day, especially with all the other stuff that’s going on.  Plus they’re doing road construction in my alley this month sometime, and they may kick off the internet who knows when, so there’s no guarantee there either.  But I’ll definitely try and read all of your blogs every day, and comment on them if I have anything intelligent to say.  OK, on to the reviews.

PAX South 2017 Part 1: A Switch for the Better

Last weekend I went to PAX South in San Antonio.  It was WAY better than the PAX South a year before.  The highlight of this trip is that I got to play the Nintendo Switch and a whole bunch of games on it, too!  So if you want to read about that (of course you do), then click on the link.  Other companies I visited included TinyBuild (why are their employees so gosh darn pretty?), and I got to play neat games like RIME and Monster Boy, the latter is actually a sequel in the Wonder Boy in Monster World franchise, and hasn’t had a new entry since Monster World 4 on the Genesis!  So yeah, please check this one out!

PAX South 2017 Part 2: Modeling, Masquerades, and Miscellany

So for part 2 of my PAX South article, I just posted a lot of other random pictures I took.  You’ll see me modeling clothes, learn about how I won a push-up contest, and you’ll see lots of cosplay photos, including one of Shantae characters!  Pretty neat stuff, so check this one out, too.

Dragon Quest Builders and Menchie’s Yogurt Team Up for a Promotion

When I posted this at GamerDad.com, the contest was still going on, but if you’re just reading it now, you might be too late.  Sorry.  Just one of the advantages of reading the GamerDad site regularly I guess.  Anyway, Dragon Quest Builders and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt teamed up in January for a promotion.  If you signed up for Menchie’s customer rewards program, you could get a code for goodies in the game, and be entered in a sweepstakes to win PS4s, copies of the DQ Builders game, and Slime plushes.  I got the game for Christmas, and my brother Jeff just LOVED it, so we found a Menchie’s Yogurt nearby and I took pictures of what decorations and things they had there, so please feel free to check it out anyway if you’re curious.

Super Mario Run (iPad)

Even though this cost ten bucks, I downloaded it anyway out of curiosity and because I had an iTunes gift certificate that I hadn’t used yet.  The game’s all right.  It’s just like a Mario game where you can’t stop running, and they reuse assets from the New Super Mario Bros. games.  There are some creative ideas here and there, but after a while I got bored with it and deleted it off my iPad.  It still has that quality Nintendo feel, but I’m not as big of a Mario fan as you might think.

LEGO Dimensions Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Story Pack & Fun Pack

I watched the movie so I could review this game better, and I think I liked the game more than the movie.  But then, I’m not really a big Harry Potter fan either.  It’s like a mini LEGO movie game.

Galaga Wars (iPad)

You all know I’m a huge classic Namco arcade junkie, so I had to download and review this free-to-play game.  I like how you can buy other spaceships from other Namco games, like the Galaxip from Galaxian, Solvalou from Xevious, and the ship from StarBlade.  They were only 99 cents each, but I didn’t buy them because I’m cheap.  Also because the game was awfully choppy and buggy.  If it weren’t for that, this would be a pretty decent Galaga game.

BlazBlue Central Fiction (PS4)

If you didn’t tell me this was a sequel, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between this and other BlazBlue games.  But that’s not really a bad thing.  BlazBlue games look great and have a lot of personality, and I’m not a fighting game expert so I’m sure the fans would notice more.  This game and the last two on this list were the first PS4 games I reviewed since I got a PS4 on a Black Friday sale last year.  And now I’m working on three more PS4 games to review (Hunter’s Legacy, Rogue One Pinball, and Double Dragon IV), so I’m really glad I got a PS4.  Can you guess who my favorite BlazBlue character is?

The Little Acre (PS4)

This is a TRUE point and click adventure, not like those ‘follow-your-nose’ adventures TellTale has been pooping out lately.  It has charming hand-drawn graphics and characters, only problem is it’s about as short as a TellTale episode.

Feist (PS4)

And last is this game that plays like a more action-oriented Limbo.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

And that’s all for now!  Before I leave, let’s play a silly Valentine’s Day game. If you could give a Valentine’s Day card to any video game character, who would it be?  Can you guess who I’d give a card to?  Let me know in the comments section, and thanks for reading!  --Cary

Yeah I hear there's an anime, too.

Really?  I hope there's an English dub.

I don't know, but if the plot is anything like the game's, you'll have no idea what's going on either way. :)

You would give a Valentine to Ulala.

I'd give one to Lavitz from Legend of Dragoon.

Ha ha!  Yeah I'd either give Ulala or Cammy a Valentine.  I'm pretty silly, aren't I? :)

My Valentine right now is Tanis from Borderlands.

tanis

I like that sort-of Goth look she's got going. Thing is, though, she's likely to drug me and use me for a lab experiment. I'd end up a brain in a jar attached to a bandicoot. I guess it'd be worth it, though. That's Valentine's Day, bad love and sorrowful tears afterwards.

Well Tanis looks a little scary but I do like her goggles.  I don't know much about Borderlands characters.  My only knowledge of Borderlands comes from Poker Night 2, where some characters make guest appearances.  I know a square robot guy who looks like a juice box, and a lady who looks like a clown mime and I think she has a bar.  And that's all!

She is scary, but those goggles are cool. That was Claptrap and Moxxi in Poker Night.

Have you ever played Poker Night 2?  You might like it if you like the Borderlands characters.  GlaDOS from Portal is the dealer.

I think I played the demo for it. I'd like to revisit it since I'm playing Borderlands again.

You'd give one to Cammy, I'd give one to ... ? I honestly don't know who I'd be compatible with. The fact most of the ones I know don't talk is a bit of an issue. So is the fact the ones who do talk seem a bit ... over the top.

Never played Beyond Good and Evil, but Jade might be a good fit for me. Or maybe reboot Tomb Raider, she seems nice.

Yup, you're right.  I'd give a Valentine to Cammy.  It would say, "Dear Cammy, thanks for beating up all the bad guys.  Love, Cary."

I'm not a big fan of Lara Croft, but there is one thing about her that I think would be neat.  She seems like a character who would be very smart, and I like smart characters.

That's why i mentioned reboot Lara specifically. Both versions are smart, but reboot Lara has more sweetness to her.

Smart thing goes for Jade as well, I'm assuming.

The one thing I don't like about reboot Lara is that they make her all dirty and grimy.  I just want to give her a bath.  Poor girl.  Ultimately, though, the only way you'll really get me interested in a Tomb Raider game is if they gave Lara a pink dinosaur sidekick that throws cupcakes at bad guys.  I did like Lara Croft GO on my iPad, though.

Jade is an all right character, I suppose.  I only wish they would've taken the stealth sections out of Beyond Good and Evil.  That ruined the game for me.

I don't really have a good reason why Cammy is my favorite female game character.  She has a cool hat and I won my first game of Street Fighter 2 with a friend when I played as her, but that's really it.  She's just cool I guess.

I probably would have enjoyed Super Mario Run is it didn't use the New Super Mario Bros. art style; maybe, it just looks so uninspired.

Yeah they could've changed the backgrounds or something.  At least put a little effort into it, Nintendo!  I think that's one thing that entices me about the new Mario Switch game because the worlds look a little different and unique.

Won't let me comment on pax p 2 on my phone, so my comment was "Shantae is my favorite too. I'll have to check out Stack up."

Yeah sorry you were not able to comment.  I provide content for the site, but I don't keep up with the nuts and bolts of it.  But thanks for reading!
