BaD: 1990

So I grew up with NES and SNES in the house, but really didn't play much at all of the two games shown here until way later via online streaming emulation on a website called nintendo8.com.

People adore Super Mario Bros. 3, and given how huge that map must have been at the time, I can see why. I mostly remember it from that Wizard movie from the 90s where we got the phrase "it's so bad" uttered when the main character puts on a Power Glove for the first time.

But while Super Mario Bros. 3 is beloved and people often refer to it as the best Mario game, I am much, much more familiar with Super Mario World. I think I got to the desert levels whenever I played SMB3 via emulation. I really liked it, but it's hard to be wowed decades after the fact, so I'll never experience it the way others did.

I do remember annoying my parents with a Mario Raccoon/Tanooki spring toy though (I'm assuming it was a hand-me-down from my older brother). I can't find a picture of the toy I had from a quick Google search, but this should give you an idea:

This, but Mario was leaner, had a tanooki suit, and was jumping ... so pretty much not this at all aside from the base and spring

Believe it or not, I played WAY more Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt than anything else growing up, but that was released before my birth year, so it doesn't get included in this BaD.

As for Mega Man 3, I recently bought the two Mega Man Collections on PS4 along with What Remains of Edith Finch in a sale. And, um ... well, the only ones I really played through emulation were 1 and 2, with 3 being the one where I could beat Snake Man's stage but nothing else. It does have what I consider the best title theme in the series, and I think Capcom agrees, since that theme plays in the Collection menu.

For now, all I can really tell you is that I was able to get through Mega Man  and espeically Mega Man 2  pretty easily using a,z, and arrow keys on a keyboard, but I seem to suuuuuuuuuck at Mega Man with a PS4  controller. I forgot how awkward and supertight some of the jumps are and there are some enemies that are pissing me off pretty badly. Maybe I should try 3 next and see if ends up being easier on a PS4 while the other 2 are easier on PC?

Anyway, this is my favorite part of  Mega Man 3:

The game I actually did play a ton of growing up? Solar Striker  for the Game Boy. I always loved the space shooter aesthetic on the cover and was always attracted to pick-up-and-play games, so this game was my go-to when waiting for things. There's not much to say about it as it's a shmup and I probably never got far, since battery life on Game Boy wasn't amazing, the screen wasn't always the easiest thing to see depending on the lighting in the room, and I tended to shut it off whenever my parents got mad at me for not paying attention to ... whatever thing I was waiting for at the time. But of the three games released in my birth year I can remember playing, this was my favorite.

Hearing the music again definitely brings back memories.

I'm not saying it rocked my world or anything, but I am saying I got bored in a lot of waiting rooms and broke it out fairly often. Again, I think this was a hand-me-down, though I can't remember for certain if my brother and I didn't have our own individual Game Boys. Hmmm ...

Whelp, that's all from my zero year. More later.

I love SMB 3 because it reminds me of Pizza Hut. The local Pizza Hut had one of those machines that had four games to choose from and since SMB 3 was the new game I always chose it. I don't think I owned my own copy until years and years later, and I may have completed the game on the PSP via some...well you know.

I never played Solar Striker but if its a shooter I'll give it a spin.

I don't know how well Solar Striker holds up; only that it was a handheld go-to for me as a youngin'.

I miss going to Cici's and playing the arcade games.

I never liked directly comparing Mario 3 and Mario World because they're such different games. SMB3 is a very fast game with short levels and World is purposely a little slower and more focused on exploration and finding secrets. They're both great, though I personally prefer Mario 3 if I have to pick.

I never played any of the NES Mega Man games as a kid (not sure how that happened) but I got the first Legacy Collection for 3DS when it came out and plowed through the first three games. Still meaning to go back and play the other three. I liked MM2 best.

I can't play these nes mega man games for shit on my ps4, so you got me beat.

And yeah, two different Mario games but I just meant people argue about those two as the "best" in the series. I don't care what anyone says, Sunshine is my favorite.

I have the Anniversay Collection of Mega Man for Xbox. I'm interested in the X series too and there's a collection coming this summer, I think. When I get to those years in my retro plan, I'm going to try them again.

Nice Shmup for the Game Boy. I'll have to look out for that one.

I certainly remember X much more than NES mega mans. I probably should have just waited for that one.

The Wizard was the first movie my friend and I got to see in a theater by ourselves without parents.  We thought we were big shots.  Of course, we only watched the movie for the Mario 3 footage at the end.

Mario 3 is great, but I actually like Mario 2 and Mario World more.  And I like Mega Man games more than any NES Mario game.

That Mario toy in your picture is from a McDonald's Happy Meal.

I know for sure the one I actually had (well older brother had and I played with or whatever) was a tanooki suit mario. Was that ever a mcdonald's toy? It's the same style of spring, just with a tanooki suit mario.

All that happened in 1990? That's so cool. No wonder it was an excellent year. I was born that year!

I used to be a BIG Mega Man fan on the NES. I beat all of them except for 6, I think.

I only ever beat MM2 robots on normal. I'm weak.

wow, that spring toy looks pretty... somethin'.  I played a lot of my NES, I was pretty much the perfect age when it came out, and I spent many many hours exploring NES worlds. I don't love SMB3 either, but it's cool... Super Mario World is better though.

I like both but world wins for nostalgia alone with me.
