The only game in the original Mega Man series I actually played growing up. I dug the art style and the opening theme. At the time, the cutscenes were really cool as well. This was before a lot of games had anything like that. I know a few did, but it was still a lot more rare than today.

I can't remember whose SNES I played this on, but it released this year in arcades and I know I played it there. I remember calling Sektor and Cyrax Ketchup and Mustard.

So apparently, THIS is the year this released in U.S. Wikipedia doesn't really specify on their lists. And Wikipedia is already a bad source for all of this stuff, so take everything with a grain of salt, I guess.

Whatever, it just means I was pissed off a little after '95 instead of in '94.

The art style for this game was amazing at the time. It still is pretty. I think we rented it a few times. Man, I miss Blockbuster. I really wish there was something that actually felt equivalent. Streaming isn't great, you have to wait for GameFly, and Red Box's selection is a joke.

This is why I'm so envious of the XBONE service where you can actually download the games.

Apparently, Tekken 2 released in arcades this year and I think on Playstation the next year. Meaning Tekken would have released on PLaystation in '95, the year this blog is about.

I remember playing Tekken at kiosks and being floored by the 3D graphics in a fighting game. 2 and 3 vastly improved on the series, but I still remember my amazement.

Pretty sure every Cici's pizza and movie theater had one of these when I was growing up. Love me some light gun games.

I'm curious if I missed Area 51's release date. That was the light gun game I played the most in arcades.

This game introduced Dixie Kong and her flying hair twirl. From what I can remember, it was an improvement on the original, which was already a pretty good game itself.

UPDATE FROM LAST BLOG: So, anything about Miyamoto not liking the original DKC was a rumor, according to a more recent IGN interview. I really don't know much about it, just that I'd heard the rumor enough myself to wonder if it was true. Apparently not. I think it makes more sense he didn't say anything like that, since he still worked for Nintendo at the time, so why would he diss a property of theirs, even if it was being made by a U.S. developer?

I guess stranger things have happened, but I wanted to touch on that real quick so I'm not just spreading rumors. In my defense, I did put a question mark after Miyamoto's remarks last blog, so it's not like I said any of this with any authority. Tongue Out I guess check into it yourself if you're curious.

From what I heard, Miyamoto's comment on DKC was taken the wrong way. He thought the game was fine, but his criticism was more to get Rare to push themselves on improving it than talking down on the game. I think a large part of it had to do with cultural differences. Either way DKC2 was a damn great game, and I think the first is just decent.

The thing is, the comment supposedly showed up in an interview with a magazine called Electronic Gaming, which was not EGM ... according to some thread I found online. It also appears in a book about video games history, again according to the thread: http://www.dkvine.com/interactive/forums/index.php?showtopic=12331

I have no idea, since the only easily searchable thing about this is Miyamoto's denial in IGN, but it must have surfaced somehow? I dunno.

I think I rented DKC a bit more often than 2, but I do remember preferring 2 overall.

Oh man I wasted so many quarters on MK3. Such a good game. When I worked at Disneyland the employee lounge behind Main Street had a MK3 machine that free. One day I lost to the guy who played Goofy.

I remember reading about the new Sony console and my friend was a huge Sega fan and he didn't think it was going to be a good system. I thought the controller had too many buttons. Our minds quickly changed when another friend would rent the system and we would play football.

Wait, MK3 was at Disneyland? Seems like a branding issue. lol

It's funny to look back on this stuff with 20/20 hindsight and realize how wrong we all were about so many things.

I rented Mega Man 7.  It's good, but pales in comparison to the first Mega Man X game.  It had a lot of good ideas, though.

Yoshi's Island is such a special game to me.  I have many good memories playing it with my little brothers and college friends.

All right, now let's see if you can guess my favorite Tekken character?

I read somewhere that Time Crisis has ties to Rolling Thunder.  I wonder if that's true?

I owned DKC, but rented DKC2.  Both were great plaformers with awesome music and graphics.

What Miyamoto said about DKC COULD be a rumor.  Or it could be Nintendo doing damage control to keep bad PR away from their golden boy.  Either way, we'll never know.

I can agree with that. I definitely preferred the X series when I would rent. I actually really liked Mega Man Soccer, though I'm not sure Wikipedia would consider that a "notable release." In fairness, I think I only rented that once.

I don't remember near as much about Yoshi's Island as I do about SMW, but both were great games.

Favorite Tekken character? Hmmm ... Xiayou? Or if we're only counting the original, then Nina?

I'm not familiar with Rolling Thunder.

I think that trilogy was pretty special, though I definitely remember 3 the least.

I don't see how slamming DKC would be beneficial for Nintendo though. Apparently, Miyamoto was annoyed they didn't want to sell SMW2 until he changed the art style to be more like DKC and he instead made it even more cartoony and they accepted the more cartoony art style.

I think what Casey said about him trying to drive them to do better might make sense but ... I just have no idea. Whatever the case, we ended up with two great games.

I rented Mega Man Soccer once.  I WANTED to like it, but I just couldn't.

Well if you count Street Figher X Tekken, my favorite character would be Pac-Man, since he's playable in that.  :)  I also like the kangaroo, panda, bear, and dinosaur (Gon).  I do like Nina as well, because in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on the Wii U, you could dress them up like NIntendo characters and Nina wore Zelda's dress and it looked like Zelda ate her spinach!  Yeah I'm easily amused.

I probably should have guessed the animal characters; I really like those as well. I'm sad the kangaroo does not appear to be in Tekken 7

I remember when MK3 came out in arcades, but it was kind of a letdown after MKII. They dropped Kitana and Mileena, my two favorites from MKII, and none of the new characters filled the void. I also wasn't crazy about the Killer Instinct-style combo system. I did get the SNES version, which was pretty good for its time, or the 1990s techno vibe the game gave off. Other than Chrono Trigger, 1995 was kind of a "meh" year in gaming for me compared to '94. I wasn't interested in the PS1 or Saturn launches and the 16-bit systems were starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel as they wound down. Other than CT and MK3, the other 1995 games I really played were NBA Jam TE, Judge Dredd (which wasn't bad, but not exciting), and the SNES version of Revolution-X, which was terrible. The one interesting thing I remember from 1995 other than CT was Square's demo of 3-D Final Fantasy VI characters battling as their way of showing off what they wanted to do in FFVII. But that was also around the time that they announced they were jumping ship from Nintendo to the PlayStation.

Damn, I forgot about Revolution X. Where you would kill people with Aerosmith CDs, right? I played that in arcades a ton.

I played it in the arcades, too, but I was surprised at how much the SNES version sucked. It was slow as hell. I eventually bought the PS1 version at a used game store for a couple of dollars and it's a lot better.

Well, of course it is. It has CDs!

I remember trying DKC2 back in the day and finding it too hard right off the bat. Now, though, I have all three DKC SNES games and can't wait to give them all another go.

I never found the first few levels of any DKC too hard, but then I never really got that far either.

I remember it as the beginning but maybe not. I just remember a ship that you jump across and not getting into it. I'm glad my friend gave me his trilogy of DKC games though. I want to run the series sometime. Maybe the Return DKC games too.

For me the SNES was the perfect console. Of course it is home to my favorite JRPG of all time in Chrono Trigger, so I'm a little biased to say the least lol

I never played Chrono Trigger aside from the VERY first part via emulator and am still just not a big RPG guy.

SNES seems to be where a lot of people discovered RPGs, but for me it was all platforming and fighters, with some beat-em-ups and sports titles thrown in.
