Sable and Sea of Solitude stood out to me as far as indie games I'd like to play. I'm not entirely sure what Sable is, but the art style looked really cool. SoS (oh ... OOOOHHHHH, how did I not catch that before?) has a unique art style as well, and while I skipped past whatever the woman was saying about it, since I was watching in the living room and trying to skip ahead to trailers so my dad could watch cable, I am interested in the seemingly introspective inspiration behind it to boot.

Outside of SoS, I really didn't care for EA's presser, although I would like to play the first Unravel game since I dig cute and charming 2D sidescrollers like that.

BG&E2 looked WAY better this year than the swear word-laden trailer from last year, and I'm even more motivated to buy a new laptop and play my Steam copy of the original. Joseph Gordon-Levitt seemed nervous to present the whole Hit Record thing, and I'm not entirely sure how that's going to work based on just the presser, but it sounds cool.

AC: Odydssey looked absolutely gorgeous and I'm probably more excited by the prospect of talking to fictional Socrates than I should be. Anyone know if they'll keep that history mode thing from Origins? Odyssey might just be my first AC game.

Am I the only one who thought the Just Dance opener was fun? No, I don't care about the game, but I don't see why everyone was up in arms about it? I certainly would enjoy it live and I didn't feel like it was THAT long, really. Plus, I think hardcore gamers forget there are other markets that buy games like this, so I get why Ubisoft did it. I digress. The DKC orchestra thing was cool too, though I thought it was weird how much they focused on the stage vs the trailer? Those were some good looking musicians though!

For Bethesda, I really liked both the Andrew WK performance and Rage 2. I still need to play RAGE. That's another one I have on Steam. Looks like the kind of mayhem I go for. Not much else to say except Wolfenstein Youngblood looked cool and 80s, but I still never clicked with New Order and don't think I'll play more. The other Bethesda franchises just aren't things that speak to me and aside from Fallout, didn't really have much new to reveal anyway. Starlink sounds interesting, but I don't think they showed much? Or maybe they did and I forgot that one sci fi trailer was that?

Nintendo was pretty much just Smash, which looks great, but it won't get me to buy a Switch. While it does get more tempting every day, I just think about how much I still want to play for PS4 whenever a new system enters my brain space.

Sony had few trailers, but I pretty much want to play everything they showed. That said, Ghost of Tsushima was really the only new thing they showed outside of Nioh 2 and RE2 which are sequels, so I can't say they "won" E3. Still, Ghost looked damn pretty on my parents' 4KTV and while it definitely looks like gameplay we've seen before, the Mongol invasion setting has me plenty interested enough.

Xbox's conference was definitely the most exciting of E3, with trailers for Cyberpunk 2077, DMC5, Gears, Halo, etc.

The games that stood out to me personally were Sekiro and Tunic. Tunic because it's Super Lucky's Tale meets Zelda and I'm all for good looking indie games made by one enterprising person in Nova Scotia, and Sekiro because it looks like Tenchu just got a good looking spiritual successor.

But while XBOX felt the least like a waste of everyone's time, I have to ask what those 18 exclusives are outside of Gears, Halo, and I presume indie games? I can't think of anything I couldn't play on my PS4 That I really want to, unless Sable is Xbox exclusive?

Read an article earlier about how weird it was Xbox didn't promote the fact X is the best system to play third party titles on and since they debuted so many of those, it is kinda weird they wouldn't flaunt that. They seemed to dedicate some time to Game Pass though, which I think is definitely a strength.

What were your E3 favourites?

I’ll have to say my top three are DMC5, GoW5 and KH III. I’m happy to see a true 2nd Dying Light.

My big disappointments we’re seeing the RE 2 remake. Me personally, I am sick of seeing these remakes. Remasters are starting to get old too. Also, the lack of ES 6, I mean what was that teaser trailer crap? They spent more time talking about the ES card game. Sorry, Bethesda really ticked me off this year.

Nintendo disapppointed me too. I guess I was hoping for a new Monkey Ball, which is looonnngggg over due.

Dying Light is another interesting one I need to play the original of. KHIII did look good, but is the 3-in-one package Sony showed off basically the trilogy (would buy) or ... The naming conventions in that series are so damn weird. Wtf does 2.8 final chapter prologue mean? DMC5 looks fun. I'll have to download that free copy of Ninja Theory's DmC, though I know that was a spinoff.

I've never gotten into Elder Scrolls and as someone who never played a lot of these games when they came out, I don't mind the remakes/remasters. My view is those are for people like me and people who played the originals can just ignore them. I don't like the "here's a title card" thing either though. Something about people saying Nintendo "won" E3 with Metroid Prime 4 being hinted at irked me. Like sure, it's cool it's coming, but you don't even know what it looks like.

I liked the first Monkey Ball and wish they'd put a Monkey Ball game in the Yakuza arcades, since they already have the character toys in the crane games. Can't say that series is something I've thought about much since though.

Yeah, I don’t get the KH 2.8 either. I guess it’s kinda like the commercial with the old guy and the fishing rod with the dollar, lol. You know, well it’s almost 3.

No, I completely understand why you would be excited about remakes and the like. I guess my 37years of gaming are starting to show, lol.

I get where you're coming from as far as lack of originality and not wanting gaming to pull a Hollywood where they start remaking EVERYTHING. I just see enough brand new stuff that interests me not to be bothered. As a movie buff who usually prefers the originals, I can understand the general sentiment.

Also, Yakuza Kiwami was the most recent remake I played and by all accounts it is genuinely just a better game in all aspects than the original Yakuza.

Update: Tunic is XBOX exclusive and I also think Ori looks cool. Sessions looks good and I miss skateboarding games, but I mainly miss their soundtracks and don't love a lot of modern top 40, so XBOX has more exclusives that appeal to me than I thought/remembered, but still no real system sellers.

Resident Evil 2!!!

Holy shit! This game looks like everything I love about horror action games. Racoon City looks so god damned real and spooky as hell! I've replayed through the older games plenty of times and actually just finished RE1 Remake again on PS4. I hope we see a remake of 3 and Code Veronica in the future if RE2 is a hit. I'd like to relive all the old games with this new engine and combat system. I saw hours of demo game play and it seems like they made it more challenging this time.

I was a big fan of DMC and I don't know who is making DMC5, but it seems to have some slow motion mechanics from Bayonetta which I love.

I was already aware of most of the games shown at E3 so I wasn't that surprised.

I'm still waiting on Dark Souls remaster on Switch and Monster Hunter on Switch.

Also, I'm glad Kingdom Hearts has a release time. I need to play through the remasters before the game comes out.

I've only ever played the first part of RE4 on Steam and liked it, but got tired of having to fix frame rate settings. I should play another RE, since people are so hyped about this, but zombies never were my scene. Haunted house stuff kind of is though and now I remember I played RE7 and it was actually too scary for me.

I need to play a DMC or a Bayonetta title as well. I have DmC free via PS+, but I know that's a spinoff.

Yeah, nothing was a big reveal to me this year.

Never got into Dark Souls or Monster Hunter. Sure you're wondering if I'm even a real gamer or not. Lol I am, but tend to focus on console exclusives and owned Nintendo until now.

I want to get that KH 3 pack Sony showed IF that's the trilogy, but the titles make it hard to tell what those damn games are.

RE 1 Remake is the best of the old games and RE4 is probably the best of the newer games. They go on sale all the time.

The spinoff DMC was a sort of prequel to DMC 1-3 and had more accessible combat than previous games. The art direction was really good and the story was more political than before.

Souls & MH games are were pretty niche even though they are more popular now so I wouldnt say you aren't a gamer. I dont play a lot of multiplayer shooters like Destiny or Call of Duty myself. You pretty much had to jump on board from the beginning w/ MH and Souls to really get into them I think.

The newer KH games are HD remasters of the old console and portable games.

I see them go on sale all the time, but I'm still so burnt I forgot to get my free PS+ copy of REmake that one year ... Lol

Yeah, I remember seeing fotage of a later DmC boss that was a virtual talking head/caricature of a cable news host set in a Tron-like world.

I don't play anything multiplayer either, really. I own Bloodborne, but as with Witcher 3, just never got past the first part.

I would honestly just want to play the main trilogy, but that's good to know. Thank you!

Birth By Sleep is a prequel and relevant to the overall story so I think it's worth visiting as well. So BBS/KH1/KH2/KH3.

DMC was also an origin story and explored the mythology of that world as well as the cause of Dante and his brothers rivalry.

My E3 favorites were covered in my blog. Sable actually is exclusive right now, and I think Tunic was also. There was also Battletoads, Gears Tactics, Forza, Ori, Session, Crackdown and I think they counted DLC as exclusive too. Not too shabby exclusives but Sony and Nintendo went quality over quantity and think their games will stick with me longer. Still, for the first time since 2013 I saw a good variety of fun exclusives from MS and unlike 2013 Don Mattrick wasn't being an idiot.

Super Step Contributing Writer

06/19/2018 at 02:29 AM

Yeah, I put an update comment above after I looked at a video about what was exclusive to Xbox. Kind of a bummer for me that Sable and Tunic are exclusive, but I knew about the rest and just didn't list them. Ori is probably my most wanted of what you listed and I didn't realize Sessions was exclusive before watching that video.

Was Don Mattrick the "your vacuum needs the Internet" guy?

I don't remember that one but when someone asked him what if you couldn't connect to the internet, such as our armed forces, he answered they should just buy a 360.

My E3 articles will start posting tonight, so I'd like to encourage you to read them to find out what my favorites were.  In the meantime, I think it would be fun for you to try and guess. :)

I want to know more about the Switch game that opened the Nintendo Direct, Daemon X Machina. That game looked really cool but no one seems to care :/

Super Step Contributing Writer

The mech one? I thought that looked cool. I think Nintendo could have said a word or two about it instead of just trailer and very little else. Unless I missed something, which is totally possible since I was skimming for trailers.

Odyssey sort of interests me too. I love ancient Greece. I've never played an AC but watched my brother play them. There sure are a lot!

Xbox had a nice conference but they just can't touch Sony on the exclusives. I know they try... and that Gear of War tactical game looks cool. But I'm just not excited about their games the way I am PS4's exclusives.

Speaking of, I'm very excited for SPiderman. Looks great.

I'm interest in RE2 remake, but I don't like over the shoulder. The FoV sucks and I don't like how characters dominate the frame, especially in a horror game where you should feel like you are the one who is dominated by the environment. Other than that I'm interested in how they will reimagine all the scenarios from the original.

Of course I'm interested in Cyberpunk, since it's one of my favorite pen and paper RPGs. I'm not naive enough to expect a big budget game to fully recreate the intricacies of a tabletop RPG, but I hope it's not too watered down.

Devil May Cry 5. I'm a mark for this series. Capcom has the best monster animation in the business, so I'm looking forward to the bosses.  And it feels a long time we've had a proper new DMC to look forward to.

I didn't know Cyberpunk was a tabletop game. Interesting.

I want to play some Rage. I have it and it's backwards compatible on XBO right now. I'm trying to wait a little bit though and play it when I get to the appropriate year and month in my retro gaming - probably October.

I really want to play the Gears strategy game. XCOM in the Gears universe would be awesome.

Super Step Contributing Writer

I want to play RAGE too, but have no interest in RTS games, so the amount of love this Gears Tactics game is getting is interesting.

KnightDriver

Too bad Gears Tactics is only for PC. That kind of kills it for me.

This E3 for me was kinda meh but there was still stuff that interested me. I think the top game Im excited for is RE2 remake. Ive already set plans to play it with my little sister like old times from when we beat the original release. Im also excited for the new AC game. Ive been enjoying Origins quite a bit. Nintendo over did it with Smash but I think they just didnt have anything else ready to show off. Sony showed off some good stuff and so did Microsoft. I might actually get a Xbone again on down the line.

Idk this year I just wasnt as excited afterwords but i have plenty of games Im picking up on down the line so I have that to look forward to.

I missed out on all the E3 goodness but thanks to social media I saw a couple of things but the Lego Villains game is one I will be buying. I'm thinking of getting the game both on the Switch and on Steam, but we shall see how long that lasts. I'm kinda leaning towards Switch unless there is a really good price for the PC.

Speaking of Switch I kind of want a Just Dance game just to see how it plays in portable mode. Also it would be fun to play a Just Dance game.

Super Step Contributing Writer

06/25/2018 at 05:10 PM

I missed most of the LEGO Villains coverage it seems. I'll have to check that out.

Just Dance would be fun to play alone. Playing with other people is not a good look for me, especially if I want a date.

Oh yeah, bg&e2 looks awesome! I really liked AC:Origins so I hope odyssey is great too. It certainly looks pretty!

Sekiro looks like Dark Souls mixed with Tenchu mixed with some Zelda. That sounds like a fucking phenomenal mix to me. I always forget from software made tenchu.

I forgot to mention im super hyped for dmc5 in my blog too.

Also super looking forward to The Last of Us 2. Loved the first one, and the second one looks pretty darn amazing as well.

Super Step Contributing Writer

06/26/2018 at 02:01 PM

I'm currently playing bg&e on steam. Funny i play that first on my new $1,000 gaming laptop, but whatever, it runs silky smooth.

I always forget From Software was around before Dark Souls, to be honest.

I think I'll like TLOU2 a lot more than TLOU. It just appeals to me more and I won't play it 2 years after its launch this time.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

06/26/2018 at 02:50 PM

What didn't you like about TLOU, if you don't mind me asking?

and don't worry. with my gaming pc I spent a lot of time emulating old games or playing doom...

Super Step Contributing Writer

06/26/2018 at 06:33 PM

It just wasn't as impressive when I played it as when everyone else got their hands on it and I got annoyed by some of the stealth sections. And I liked the story, but thought it was overhyped a bit. Plus, there's a certain "grit" to the visual texture of the game that doesn't appeal to me all that much.

Don't get me wrong, TLoU mostly does everything right, but if I had to list my complaints, those would be it. Those and a couple too many crate puzzles, cause Naughty Dog.

I think the fact TLoU 2 is about hate will make it more interesting to me. I've heard the zombie survival story and rag tag teams banding together story enough. A story that delves into how that environment might corrupt someone's soul just appeals to me more. Plus, there's a certain "gloss" to TLoU 2's visuals I prefer to the former's "grit." Just looks cleaner and more "next gen" to me. I get why grit works for a zombie apocalypse, but I prefer a dark style with a little shine.
