Useless Crap I've Been Doing

Searching for more work, contemplating graduate school, and...

Movies: Well, holy crap, I've not seen any new movies lately. Definitely seeing the new Iron Man this weekend, though.

Books: Reading Mockingjay, so I can be done with the Hunger Games trilogy. I read Catching Fire so I could watch the trailer without any spoilers. I was disappointed by some things about its ending (namely, I felt like Katniss's narration was trying to catch up with a bunch of things I'd already figured out about where it was going), but the movie trailer looks awesome, if, as Cracked pointed out, very blue and orange (if you're curious why, I can tell you a long, boring spiel about Kelvin temperatures and how they've been used to portray mood long before Cracked thought it was a "new trend") and does not appear to have shaky-cam. New director, for the win!

Games: Still just play Pokemon Pinball whenever I'm tired of job hunting and other crap. Getting burned out on rarely catching any new Pokemon though ... never thought I'd say that at twenty-three, but here we are.

I'm pretty stoked to go out and see Iron Man 3 on Friday. Last movie I went to was Evil Dead, which is kind of hard to believe it's only been 4 weeks roughly since its release!

I heard that Evil Dead remake was pretty good. Shamefully, I did not like the first one when I had it on Netflix, and only just a couple weeks ago got halfway through Evil Dead II at my friend Austin's place. That one I thought was awesome, since it's when they started playing it up for laughs. Didn't find the first one scary, but found what I saw of the second hilarious.

I'm stoked for Iron Man 3 as well.

I did not realize iron man 3 was coming out already.  It seems so soon.  Star Trek and Man of Steel are at the top of my list as far as movies are concerned.

Nver got past the first hunger games book.  i finished it, but do not have much of a desire to read the sequels.

Those two are high on my radar as well. Now that summer has rolled around, I'll be seeing a lot more movies. Thank God for two dollar ticket theaters I can walk to if I so feel. Smile

I loved the first Hunger Games, it was a real page turner for me, started reading it the Sunday before the movie came out, simply cause that date was my birthday. Catching Fire was a bit more of a slow burn, and kind of turned me into one of those people yelling at the main character for being an idiot, although of course I had the advantage of dramatic irony.

Don't feel bad Joe. The last movie I saw was The Hobbit lol. Then again, I usually just wait till they come out on dvd and rent em or whatever. Keep your head up man and stay positive!

I'm staying positive now, was frustrated this morning for a wasted trip, but slept it off, and hey, a workout I did before that extended nap is making my abs sore, so some good has come today. Cool

I liked The Hoibbit, I think in part cause I read the book and had my expectations lowered so much by reviews, but whatever I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I really hope Iron Man 3 is better than 2, I left the cinema rather disappointed after seeing that installment, though to be fair quite a few of the Marvel films could have been better. Roll on Avengers 2!

Only Marvel film I  just really didn't like that much at all was Thor; my personal favorite was probably Captain America (outside of Avengers, of course), but Iron Man 2 I enjoyed, but had kind of a meh feeling about when leaving the theater, so I definitely see where you're coming from. 3 looks really good, though.

And I'm excited for Avengers 2, but that's not for two years. I refuse to get hyped for something I must wait that long for. lol

I need to catch up on Iron Man 2 before going for the third film. Right now, the only two films i'm excited to see are Star Trek and Man of Steel.

Nice songs. I specially liked that Macklemore song, even if i'm not a big fan of Thrift Shop.

Eh, I don't know if you really need to catch up on Iron Man 2, but it is decent, if a let-down, especially compared to the first one. It was on Netflix when I had it, but that was long ago.

I'm really excited for Into Darkness and Man of Steel as well. Honestly, I think I'm equally excited for all three movies. The nerd stuff released in summer has just been high quality the last few years, so that's what I tend to get excited for.

Oh and, Macklemore's other stuff tends to not be all that much like thrift shop. Definitely not as pop-oriented, at the very least. And I love Thrift Shop, but even if you don't, I'd highly recommend looking up some of his other stuff. I think I might post a review of The Heist.

haven't read the hunger games books.  They seem okay.  Haven't seen the movie either, but the star actress is a looker.

Blue and orange what?!?  Sealed

Pokemon pinball sounds fun.  Is there any kind of game they can't make out of Pokemon?  I want a Pokemon first person rhythm game.  Wink

I have no idea, but that reminds me, someone suggested Pokemon Snap for the WiiU, which I think is a great idea (it was Jon from GameGrumps, a Youtube game show).

A recent Cracked.com article got on to the newest Hunger Games trailer for using the colors blue and orange A LOT. In college, I was taught that you can white balance, place gels in front of etc. a camera so that the color temperature it records in, measured in units known as Kelvins, can make something appear blue (very hot) or red (very cool); here's a much better and more concise explanation: http://www.mediacollege.com/lighting/colour/colour-temperature.html

And yes, Jennifer Lawrence is hot and has a great personality.

Iron Man 3! I'm gonna see it the Tuesday after release day.

I didn't know the trailer for the second Hunger Games is out. I enjoyed the first two, but wasn't a fan of the third. I really need to sit and watch the first the film. I like Jennifer Lawrence, but I've never been able to sit and watch Hunger Games all the way through.

I liked the first, was lukewarm on the second (started great, but I wasn't that captivated by its ending), hoping I'll like the third. The movie does drag things out and has too much shaky cam (so excited that seems to be gone in the new one), but I still really enjoyed it, especially the behind the scenes looks.Could have done without the crap CGI, but Lawrence's good looks offset it. lol

I am gonna try to see Iron Man 3 Sunday with no lines, unless I can find someone to go before then.

Been a while for me and I love going to the movies. It's either Iron Man 3 or Evil Dead for us this weekend. Forgot to tell you I picked up The Heist while I was on vacation and I'm really digging it. Best CD I've bought this year so far. Glad you turned me onto it. I liked Fitz And The Tantrums. Had heard of em but never heard a song. Best of luck with the job hunting. Hope something really good comes your way.

Those both sound like good choices, I hear Evil Dead's remake is good, but I just wasn't a fan of the original; 2 I really liked what I saw of, though.

Glad you like Macklemore, same here with his CD.

If you like 60s soul style, Fitz and Tantrums last effort had a much more "vintage" feel to it, and was the CD I got for my birthday last year or maybe a couple years ago. I was so happy one shift when I found out we had this song.

I should read the Hunger Games books. I loved the film and look forward to the next. Of course, these days I like anything with Jennifer Lawrence in it. Glad she won the Oscar. We saw the movie "House At The End Of The Street" recently and she was really good in it. I see what you're saying about the sound of Fitz And The Tantrums. It sounds like they did something in the sound mix to give it a 60's feel. Great sax!

I read the first Hungergames after seeing the movie and plowed through the other two books. Looking forward to the next film, seems like they are not taking to many liberties and sticking pretty close to the original material. I will likely see Iron Man next week, I don't care for crowds. Another movie I'm lookin forward to this summer is Kick Ass 2. Oh and Pacific Rim! Not saying anything just look up the preveiw on youtube.

Yeah, the only liberties they took with the first one were a few key details (a couple did bother me, but not so much I didn't like it, I know they have to copmpromise), and just looking at it outside Katniss's perspective, which I think was a really good creative decision.

I've seen the trailers for Kick-Ass 2 and Pacific Rim already; honestly, if there's a new one, I want to avoid spoilers. Kick-Ass was my favorite movie of 2010, definitely looking forward to Carey's performance, but Pacific Rim I'll wait and see. I know that has a lot of people excited, but it's not exactly my type of movie. If it gets good reviews (and probably will, since Del Torro is directing), I'll see it.

GeminiMan78

I like Del Torro's style and I'm and oldschool anime fan so dudes piloting giant robots and fighting monsters is something I have always wanted to see someone try and do as a live action film. Several years ago there were rumors of a possible live action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie. It never happend and I don't know whether to be disappointed or relieved, lol.

They were not plot essential details but they brought a higher level of disgust and hate for the guys in charge if I'm thinking of the same details your thinking of. That and just how advanced the Capital was despite how things looked in the ghetto where Katniss grew up.

Kick Ass is like the Yin to Watchmens Yang, I like how they both take the idea of how super heroes would more or less work in the real world.

One of the specific details I was thinking of was who gave her the Mockingjay pendant in the books, not what I think you're thinking of, though neither were necessarily plot essential. Also, some diminishing of the violence made certain scenes less emotionally impactful for me. There were a few other changes, but I can't remember, and don't really care to, the movie was about as accurate as one could hope (hell, they even did a decent job of implying things like what the dogs were and why her mom was seemingly mute, if they never outright said it; or apparently they did, cause my ex gf who never read the book caught on quick), so meh.

As for Kick-Ass and Watchmen, I see the comparison, but I enjoyed Watchmen on a much more cerebral and emotional level, whereas Kick-Ass to me was just really good entertainment. Of course, I actually read Watchmen before seeing the movie, so that helped.

I don't really have a reference point for what you're talking about with old anime, since I'm a n00b when it comes to it (I'm one of those people that's only really gotten in Cowboy Bebop, FMA, maybe a couple Miyazaki films), but I was really into Power Rangers as a kid, so I understand the appeal of giant monsters/robots fighting. I'm certainly not doubting Pacific Rim will be great, just wondering if I'll love it as much as everyone else probably will.

Well Neon Genesis is a good one to start with and is pretty easy to find. Patlabor is another good one. Its less serious and dark like Neon Genesis. Its about a goof ball police squad who pilot these 3 story high work robots called labors. Then there is of course Robotech and Gundam. Robotech is just classic. Gundam has spawned countless story arcs, time periods, even styles as far as story telling even goes. Its been around for over 30 years and they just keep making more.

I agree with you on the Hungergames as for the potency of a certain death being toned down. I think they did it to keep the PG-13 rating and also they maybe thougt it might be controversial seeing a kid killed like a wild animal basically.

Super Step Contributing Writer

05/04/2013 at 07:47 PM

Yeah, I know why they did it, but as someone who studied this stuff in college, I feel like there were much better ways to keep some of that impact without compromising the MPAA rating, namely through the use of angles and long shots as opposed to shaky cam and changing the method of murder; but what they cut to in the districts after it happened almost made up for it, that was one of my favorite scenes.

I like the sound of Patlabor, which is funny, since it's the only one you mentioned I hadn't heard of. lol
