Cuphead and VVVVVV ... and Castlevania ... and LiS2

There are a few things that may be happening with VVVVVV (just beat) and Cuphead:

I'm just great at 2D games and 3D is still confusing to me

You all lied about how hard these games are

The first world in Cuphead is not at all what anyone meant when they said the game was hard and I should not be as surprised as I am by how quickly I got through 25% or so of the game already on normal difficulty.

VVVVVV isn't known for being all that hard and I just got annoyed by that escort mission (damn you, Victoria).

In other news, I'm still stuck on this part of Castlevania IV:

Image result for super castlevania iv stage b

Specifically, the part of this level (Stage B) where you have to jump on floating platforms and there is one particular section where I think the game expects you to keep walking left and not jump in order to avoid certain wall spikes.

Around 2:35 in the above video is where I keep dying.

I've noticed that certain enemies in Castlevania IV change their patterns based on how many lives you have and it's ... annoying when the game wants you to be fairly precise and expects you to know what's coming only to change things up just enough to screw you over.

Also, I just played through Life is Strange 2 Episode 1 and you can expect a very late review soon.

What are y'all up to?

Im not so great at 2D games. I do enjoy them though. I was better and more patient when I was a kid.

I'm good at them because I can readily see any obstacles and know exactly where I'm going, which is not always the case in 3D.

What is this word "hard"? Do you mean when a game is like Dark Souls?

Honestly, I've never played Dark Souls cause the setting and style just isn't appealing to me.

For whatever reason, as similar as it is, Bloodborne is just way more aesthetically pleasing to me.

I think I heard that Cuphead's enemies change significantly with change in difficulty. I could be wrong.

Oh those floating platforms. I really hate that sort of stuff.

I am trying to ignore the fact that I have two finals to take in the next week. I used to like school until now.

That's possible. I haven't unlocked hard mode, but while I've died plenty on Normal, I haven't really had cause to throw my controller, especially since the levels and boss battles are fairly short, which gives you a chance to recognize patterns.

The floating platforms are fine by me if you mean Castlevania IV, it's the fact you can't see obstacles and pretty much have to die the first time to figure out what to do that bugs me. Like I said, I did end up beating Dracula though. The game just restarts and gets harder. I made it to about level 3 or so on the harder mode before calling it quits.

Why don't you like school? I might need to go back, either for a doctorate or for certifications.

I hate that trial-and-error style gameplay. It just bugs me.

I like school but finals are a pain. They give me terrible anxiety. It's also probably because of this Networking class. There's so much content, I don't know how I'm going to get through it.

I find Cuphead more difficult than Dark Souls, though Dark Souls suits my skillset more than Cuphead does. I bounced off it because I'm not a huge fan of boss rush games - even though I know Cuphead is really good.

Yeah I got stuck on that bit in Castlevania IV. I don't actually like IV as much as 1 or Rondo of Blood. Something about the artstyle and the way some sections play out more like showcases for the NES rather than being compelling gameplay experiences.

If you finish those games and want recommendations for really good indie 2D games though let me know.

As for what I've been up to... read my latest blog. I've been playing indie FPS games xD.

I'm the opposite. I love a good 2D challenge, but in 3D I'm always wondering how the fuck I got hit and from where.

Castlevania IV definitely drags in places and Stage 5 doesn't really need to exist. When it's good it's REALLY good, and I think it's more replayable than other Castlevanias due to the relatively lower diffiiculty, but I more or less agree with what you're saying.

I'd love 2D indie recommendations. Still need to finish Rondo of Blood though. Not a huge fan of the bats on the clocktower level always fucking me up before I even get in the clocktower.

Will do.

Ok some recommendations: I highly recommend Hollow Knight, especially if you like the metroid inspired castlevania games or well, metroid. Hollow Knight is one of the few games that comes close to grabbing onto what I think  makes Dark Souls special, but even without that it'd be an enjoyable experience. It's in my top 5 games of all time, so you should definitely give it a go.

Since you're a fan of Castlevania, you have to try Odallus: The Dark Call, as it basically mixes the classic style castlevania with the metroidvania style of the newer games.

Momodora is also a really, really good metroidvania. It's got really nice pixel art and a really dense atmosphere that I love.

If you haven't played Dead Cells yet, I highly recommend it. Oh and Iconoclasts!

Now, all of those games are quite difficult, so if you want a nice chill experience after those titles, I suggest Yoku's Island Express. It's a pinball metroidvania (yes, I am obsessed with metroidvania's), and it's just a really nice, relaxing game. The two genres actually work well together.

Those all sound good. Hmmm ... maybe the pinball game first or whatever is cheapest on Steam.

Steam sales start either tomorrow or the next day and I'd say a fair few of those would be pretty cheap.

Also, with Momodora grab Reverie under Moonlight. There are 4 momodora games, but the first ones aren't all that good. If you like Reverie go back and try the others but I definitely recommend that one first.
