Loot Box Reviews!

While not quite as popular as they used to be, Loot Boxes are a recent craze as of late.  They’re boxes full of themed items that you either order through the mail, or get in a store.  Most of the time you don’t know what you’re getting, but sometimes you do.  The themes in these boxes range anywhere from video games, movies, or just dog toys and treats.  I’ve been tempted to get loot boxes from time to time, but I usually don’t because I like to know what I’m paying for, and many are just too expensive.  That loot box at PAX South that had Mega Man on the sides was mighty tempting, but not at 50 bucks!  However, there have been a few times in the past year or so where I bought a loot box sold in the games section at Wal-Mart or Target when they were on sale.  Why did it take me so long to write about them?  Well I thought I’d save them for a rainy day, and now seems about as rainy as ever.  Also I have a selection of random games I’ve reviewed at GamerDad.com as well, and just like loot boxes, you never know what you’re going to get until you check them out!  So please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  OK let’s begin!

Pac-Man Loot Box

I first saw this Pac-Man Loot Box before Christmas at Target, but it was too expensive.  So after Christmas I got it on sale.  Even then, it’s the most expensive loot box I’ve ever bought, at 20 bucks.  And the paper packaging around it was gone, too.  But I said, “Aw what the heck” and bought it anyway!

Midway Classic Arcade Loot Box

I think I saw this one about a year ago on sale after Christmas for about 10 or 15 bucks.  Since it was so long ago I doubt you can still find it.  Anyway, I love classic arcade games so it seemed like a good deal.  I especially liked the Joust bobblehead.  You just don’t see Joust merchandise!

Super Mario Loot Box

I got it on sale at Wal-Mart after Christmas last year for five bucks!  It was on clearance so I doubt you can find it now.  It was such a good deal that I bought the other same one they had and gave it to one of my brothers for his birthday.  You may think I’m a huge Mario fan, and I do like a lot of the games.  But I’m probably not as big of a Mario fan as you think I am.  There are franchises I like much more, and would rather have in a loot box.  Like Pac-Man, Mega Man, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Zelda, etc.  What game franchise would you like a loot box of?

Totally Reliable Delivery Service (iPad)

Become a delivery worker in this haphazard rag doll physics-based sandbox game.  Travel around a 3-D city and deliver packages anyway you can, or just mess around.  It kind of reminds me of the hub world in LEGO games.  Unfortunately, they gave me the mobile version to review, and the free version at that.  I think it would be better on consoles, and I think they should’ve given me the console version to review.  So needless to say, I didn’t give the mobile version a very good review.  It’s just not playable with touch screen controls.  They cheaped out on me!

Biped (PS4)

Speaking of games with bad controls…I just don’t like games that make things more challenging by simply messing with the controls.  It’s a shame with this one because it’s such a cute game otherwise and reminds me of 3-D GameCube games (that’s a good thing).  Anyway, you help cute little WALL-E style robots get past obstacles and activate beacons so they can return home.  You don’t control these robots in the typical fashion, though.  You use the L and R analog sticks to move their legs so you can make them walk, slide, flip switches and levers, and other things.  There are two player co-op and single player modes.

Save Your Nuts (Switch)

Gather nuts and defend them from other backyard urban animals in this pick up and play multiplayer game.  It mixes elements of soccer and simple battle games for some deceptively fun matches that anyone can get into.  It looks pretty amateurish and basic, but I was impressed how members of my family who usually don’t play games were able to quickly understand and play it.

Koongya Draw Party (iPad)

And last, if you enjoy playing drawing charades style games like Pictionary or Win, Lose, or Draw, then you may want to check out this free-to-play mobile title.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading and commenting on my reviews!  I do appreciate it!  Later!  --Cary

I love that Midway Classic Arcade loot box. I'm going to have to look out for these things in the stores from now on. I thought these were mail order only.

Thanks for reading!

Yeah I usually find these loot boxes in the games section of places like Wal-Mart and Target.  I usually don't get them because they are too expensive or don't have things that interest me in them.

And if Totally Reliable Delivery Service is on Game Pass, I'd say try it out even though I gave the game a bad review.  I imagine it's much better on consoles.  I'm a little disappointed that tinyBuild gave me the mobile version to review, since I cover them so much every time I go to a convention.  But oh well.

Some games work great on touch screens. Some don't. I like gaming on my iPad though.

Me too.  The reason why I got an iPad was I felt it was becoming a viable gaming platform.  But not for ALL games.

I don't care for touch screen gaming in general. Gotta have an actual controller or at least a physical keyboard.

I can deal with most touch screen controls except I don't care much for 'virtual buttons.'

I always see the loot boxes in stores and there are a bunch of places online that offer everything from items you listed to records and I think there was one that had classic plastic games. I tried Loot Crate for a bit and it was fun, but it was also pricey. I like how it bugs me to not know what's in the box yet I would buy packs of cards not knowing what was inside.

One of my brothers did Loot Crate for a while.  Sometimes he'd get some neat stuff, but many times it was just junk.

Looks like the Loot Crate fad fizzled out.

Yeah my brother doesn't do Loot Crate anymore.  He did a loot box thing for his dog, but I'm not sure if he's still doing that either.
