Majora's Mask: Complete After All These Years

It was honestly a bit anticlimactic an ending given how many years I left it right up to the end, only to get frustrated by the time mechanic when trying to collect the last few masks, but I do feel a weight has been lifted in some strange way. This was THE game that always bothered me the most that I hadn't finished, but today I got all five masks and finished it with the final mask you get for completing certain tasks at the end. Unfortunately, that mask makes the final confrontation way too easy, but again, so glad to have it done.

Now it's time to finish the last two Bombermen (or whatever that kid's gang is called) notebook deeds, so it can really be complete, and then finish Spirit Tracks, which I also left sitting right near the end; once I beat that one, that will mean I've finished all of my owned Zelda games.

My Backloggery.com account is now at 38.2% complete, 26.5% beaten, and 35.3% Unfinished, or in other words my record is roughly 65-35 in my favor (note: putting Korg DS-10, which is a synth software, not a game with set goals, in the null category, it's more like 67-33, but I'm saying it's unfinished because I really want to actually use it for a song at some point).

My next blog might even be reviews of at least Majora's Mask, maybe Spirit Tracks as well. For now though, I'm just celebrating this bittersweet victory ... with food, because why the hell did I not eat since Breakfast? Stupid time-sink game. It's also slowly dawning on me I would NEVER have been able to do this today if I had more consistent work. I've decided to stop thinking too hard about this while I'm ahead.

Good job with majora's mask.  I had not played it at all until last year.  I got to the water dungeon and decided to quit.  The 3d Zelda games were never my favourite, so I am satisfied with where I ended in majoras mask.

I love the 3D Zeldas, but this one has always been the black sheep to me, and a lot of people.

I enjoyed Minish Cap quite a bit as far as the 2D ones, but never got very far in A Link to the Past.

I would definitely give MM a second chance if they ported it to a newer engine.  It is more accurate to say that I wasn't a fan of the n64 Zelda games.  I didn't really give the GameCube or wii games a chance.

They followed roughly the same formula, so I think you might feel similar about them, but they were a bit larger in scope in my mind, so I can't tell you that for sure.

I'm waiting for Majora's mask to come out on 3DS.  Hopefully it will.  Otherwise who knows if I'll play it again.  I've gotten halfway through it before, but that was on Gamecube and I don't know if I still have that saved game.

Congrats on beating it.  That must feel great!

It feels great, but at the same time, the ending wasn't as epic, because I essentially created years of artificial hype by not beating it.

Yeah I don't think I beat Majora's Mask.  I don't remember the ending anyway.  I think when it came out, Banjo-Tooie was released right after that, so I got distracted.

I never even played much of Banjo Kazooie except a couple times at the neighbors', let alone Tooie.

MM is my all-time favourite Zelda game, didn't play it till the Gamecube Zelda collection. I didn't mind all the common complaints, the series needs more games like that.

I'd love a complete remake on the Wii-U but that'll probably be reserved for the sequel, if it's on the 3DS i wouldn't mind.

I will fully admit, it is the most original of the Zelda games. If they added an option to skip certain sections where you have no choice but to make Link wait for too many minutes at a time, I might even have it as my favorite 3D Zelda. Only that's not the case, but I definitely appreciate what they were going for.

Congrats Joe! That's the only Zelda game I haven't beat and could care less if I ever do lol. Damn time mechanic ruined it for me.  It must be nice to beat it after all these years. There are some games that I don't think I'll ever finish. Ninja Gaiden on NES comes to mind. Damn birds! Yell

Yeah, I saw the AVGN episode for that one. It doesn't bother me with save file games when the hardest part is at the end, but those NES classics? I don't know if I could do it. Luckily, at the time we still had those in the house, I sucked enough I never had to get that frustrated. Yup; "aim low, stay happy," that's my motto. Laughing

The time mechanic actually has a cool development story behind it, it's basically a really creative way to deal with time constraints on the developers themselves, but its execution can be iffy to say the least, I agree. But at the same time I think it's really creative, and if they would just get rid of the parts where you have to wait ten minutes DOING NOTHING I think it might shoot up to being one of my favorites, but alas that's not the case.

That's cool. I never made it passed the Water Temple. The time mechanic was what got me in the end. I did watch my brother finish the game and the last dungeon the Mirror Temple (I think) looked even harder. Combined with the whole mask searching thing it never bothered me that I never beat it, though I do want to give the game a try again.

Yeah, I had been past the last four dungeons for quite a long time, it was the mask hunt holding me up.

I just don't like time limits and feeling that I have to be in a rush. That goes for games and regular real life. I had the Gamecube version of this game and I just couldn't get into it. I got frustrated with it real fast, never even got out of the village to the first dungeon.

The time limits weren't so bad to me, it was the length of time spent waiting for events to happen that got really grating. But the dark story and masks kept me going.

It's always a good feeling when you finally beat a game. Congrats and you're making me want to update my Backloggery. I need to move a lot of my older games to Null.

Super Step Contributing Writer

Yeah, I put 1080 Snowboarding in "Null" because even if there's something to "beat," I'm never going to sit down and play it for anything but an exhibition.

I really want to get MM one day, either by the Virtual Console service or wait for a 3DS remake. Also, great share with that fact.

Yeah, I wish they'd source where they got these facts, though, I mean it sounds right to me, but how do I know for sure?Anyway, I thought it was interesting, so shared it, and thanks.

A 3DS remake would be cool, although that time mechanic on a hadheld ... I dunno.

I have Majora's Mask on the GameCube collector's edition but I haven't played it. Been meaning to for years though. My younger brother tried it and got stuck on one part because he kept running out of time lol. Glad you finally finished it. That is a great feeling Smile

Yeah, that was a pretty common occurrence for me as well. Strategy guide was broken out with absolute zero guilt for this one. lol

Congrats on finishing Majora's Mask. That's one I've never owned or played. May get the Gamecube version if I see it out there. I don't like timed missions, they drive me nuts! But there is such a feeling of satisfaction when you finally beat the clock.

Super Step Contributing Writer

05/11/2013 at 09:45 AM

The timed missions aren't really so hard it's just waiting for them to start, then in certain cases failure means going all the way back to day one. But again, the masks and dark storyline kept me going, so the game has a lot going for it, it's just I hate watching a clock when playing a game. lol

thanks for the reminder. I still need to even attempt this game. i got it with my GC copy of The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition. Only tried it once but got frustrated by the time mechanics too.

Using a strat guide makes it a lot less frustrating ... but it's still frustrating.
