Let’s celebrate the start of Summer with some game reviews I’ve recently written at GamerDad.com!  Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  OK let’s begin!

Cotton Fantasy (PS4)

“Cotton” is a series of 2-D horizontally scrolling shooters that were very popular in the 90’s during the 16- and 32-bit eras.  They star a candy-obsessed witch girl named Cotton who flies on her broom as she shoots down foes in spooky yet silly settings.  It’s an example of the “Cute ‘Em Up” subgenre of shooters similar to titles like Twinbee, Parodius, Fantasy Zone, or Ordyne.  Last year was Cotton’s 30th Anniversary and we got a few games and re-releases out of that.  There was a reboot of the original game, which I reviewed, as well as re-releases of some of the 16-bit titles, which I also reviewed.  And now Cotton is in a brand new 2-D shooter named Cotton Fantasy!

Min Min amiibo

I got another amiibo figure so I thought I’d show it off here.  This is one Min Min, a character from ARMS who was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, hence the amiibo.  Usually when they do these Smash amiibo, they release them in groups.  But according to Nintendo, because of supply shortages or whatever, they only could release one this time, so we got Min Min!  So let’s take a look at her!  Although I wish they would’ve picked Twintelle from ARMS to be put in Smash.  She’s my favorite character for…reasons.

Dandy & Randy DX (PS4)

Dandy and Randy are a bird and a rabbit (not sure which is which) who love adventure and hunting for treasure.  One day they receive a flyer about an island full of treasure and a lost diamond, so they immediately set off to find it so they can pay off their debts.  But there are traps and puzzles on the island, as well as pirates!  And is that flyer really all it seems to be?  You’ll find out in Dandy & Randy DX.  Not sure what the DX is for, but the game is a retro styled top down viewed 2-D action adventure game where you’ll solve block pushing puzzles, defeat enemies, and avoid traps.  Kind of like classic Zelda dungeons.  Actually the game reminds me most of Goof Troop, a SNES game from Capcom (based on the Disney Afternoon show).  The Capcom team who made that game went on to make a few handheld Zelda titles and eventually form their own company Flagship, who would make a few Kirby games as well.  Anyway, none of that has anything to do with Dandy & Randy, but at least you know that game has good bones.

Reader Review: Dungeons and Dragons: Family Time or Bad News?

Next are a few articles my brother Ben wrote for me, so be sure to read them.  I’ve never been able to get into Dungeons and Dragons or any tabletop role playing game, really.  Too much math for my tastes.  That’s why I just stick to Final Fantasy games.  And even then just the old school ones.  But most of my other brothers really like Dungeons and Dragons.  For instance, my brother Jeff once ran a long running DnD group at his local library.  And another one of my brothers, Benjamin Woodham, wrote this neat article I’d like to share here.

Reader Review: Rune Factory 5 (Switch)

I’m no stranger to reviewing Rune Factory games.  In fact, I recently reviewed Rune Factory 4 Special on PS4.  Unfortunately I was not able to review the recently released Rune Factory 5.  But luckily my brother Benjamin Woodham decided to review it on Switch, so check out his review here.

Slap the Rocks (PS4)

I love it when games describe what you do in their title.  “Don’t Die!” “Jump on Things.”  Well, anyway, here’s one: “Slap the Rocks.”  You know those Zelda dungeon puzzles where you have to push sliding blocks that move until they hit something, and you have to figure out the best paths to push them in?  Yeah this whole game is that.  In this one, you’re a dude with a sword out to collect treasure, but there are rocks, bushes, and holes in your way. Use your sword to chop down bushes and hit rocks so they slide into holes to create a path for the treasure.  This top-down viewed actn puzzler is available on most current consoles, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Let’s Get Fit (Switch)

Time to get that summer beach bod with Let’s Get Fit, a new fitness game for Nintendo Switch.  If you buy the physical version of this game (recommended), you’ll get two straps that you can put your JoyCons in, and then wrap them around your arm and leg so the game can sense your movements.  You can also buy this game digitally, but if you don’t have the straps, you can still play the game but they’ll limit you on what exercises you can do and what achievements you’ll earn.  Unfortunately I only got the digital version for review.  But luckily I had straps from Ring Fit Adventures and Nintendo Switch Sports, so I could still try out this one somewhat.

Rage Among the Stars (PS4)

A little gray alien has crash landed on a mysterious planet and now must survive the most taxing and challenging 2-D platformer levels ever!  Yeah this is one of those rage inducing games where you die several times per level.

And that’s all for now!  Hope you all have a great summer and thanks for reading and posting ‘likes’ and comments on my reviews!  I appreciate it.  Later!  --Cary

I had heard Rune Factory 5 was kind of a rough disappointment and the review here is in line with that. Too bad. I haven't played a Rune Factory game but have always been interested in them.

I like the Rune Factory games better than Harvest Moon because they streamline the farming stuff so you have more time to focus on exploring dungeons and battling monsters!

I've been able to review pretty much all the handheld Rune Factory games.  But there are a few that I haven't been able to review, like 5.  One other one I wish I could've reviewed was Rune Factory Frontiers, which let you farm on the back of a giant Kaiju and you could control it to fight other giants!

I love DnD but I'm more interested in the 1984 game Toon right now. I play DnD in a silly way as it is. Toon is just that, a roleplaying game with cartoon characters with silly spells and such. I just need to find a copy somewhere. Oh, and someone to play it with. That's the hard part.

One of my friends way back in high school told me about a toon tabletop RPG that was like DnD.  I wonder if that was what he was referring me to.  He invited me over to his house to play another tabletop RPG one time, and I feel asleep before it got to be my turn.  In my defense, they took way too long to set up.  But he didn't invite me over to play RPGs after that.

Ha ha. Last time I played DnD with a friend I couldn't keep from trying to make a comedy out of it and do zany things. It drove him a little nuts trying to keep me to the rules he was setting as DM. We played one more time and I bought a giant 20-sided die on the sly and tossed it out on the first encounter to surprise him. He was somewhat amused but not enough in my opinion. We haven't played since. Ha ha. This is why, when I came across Toon, I thought it was just perfect for me in my present state of mind. I just can't take DnD seriously anymore. Ha ha.

Yeah I think some players may take it too seriously.  I think that's why I got bored.

I actually liked building worlds, maps and characters more than actually playing it.

Sounds like how Will Wright created SimCity, because he had more fun making the maps for Raid on Bungling Bay more than actually playing it!

Right, ha ha. I should do game design. Actually, I just got a Python code book. I'm going to check it out. I kind of liked coding a web page in a class I took a few years ago.

I wrote a review of a coding book a few years ago you might want to check out, too.

Unity is another one of those programming languages I could get into. I believe there is a free version.

After reviewing that book, I feel like I oculd code that stuff if I followed the directions, and I'm horrible with that kind of thing.  So it seemed like a good book to me.

I'm wondering if I can code something with my phone too.

I have no idea how to even start making games for phones!
