Get a bowl of your favorite sugary cereal ready, because in this episode of The Pizza Pixel Podcast, my brother Jeff and I talk about our favorite Saturday Morning cartoons!  Those are kind of a thing of the past thanks to streaming services and whatnot.  But for a good long while, they sure were big with kids.

Anyway, please forgive the poor audio quality in this episode.  Jeff got a new computer and we were having microphone troubles but I figured it would be best to get something out there than nothing at all.  Plus it’s getting harder and harder to arrange our schedules to record these things.  Finally, this is one of those episodes that has a “secret song” so be sure to listen all the way to find out what it is!

Anyway, thanks for listening.  In the comments section, tell me YOUR favorite Saturday Morning cartoons!  Later!  --Cary

Cereal would be Sugar Smacks with Dig-em Frog on the box. They're known as Honey Smacks now. Show would probably be Speed Racer.

Bleah!  Smacks are too sweet for me!

Speed Racer, alongside Star Blazers and Voltron, are some of the first anime cartoons I watched.

My other favorite was Captain Crunch.

Again, Cap'n Crunch was just too sweet for me.  I've never had a sweet tooth, even as a kid.  I think I like the Cap'n Crunch character more than the cereal.  He was created by Jay Ward Studios, who also did Rocky and Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle.

I actually ate cereals like Total and Raisin Bran most of the time. I didn't have a sweet tooth either. I used to save up all my Halloween candy. I ate it so slowly, I'd still have some the next year.

When I was a kid I would go trick or treating with my best friend and when we were done, I'd give him all the Halloween candy I didn't like, which was more than half my bag.  That's probably one of the reasons why I stopped trick or treating once I hit Middle School.

Also If I spent the night at my friend's house and he had Lucky Charms for breakfast, i'd take all my marshmallows out and put them in his bowl.  Then his mom would wonder why he was so hyper for the rest of the day. :)

My favorite Saturday morning cartoons were Garfield and TMNT. That was also the time that they started phasing them out. NBC stopped doing cartoons altogether in favor of Saved By the Bell and golf. I also liked The Smurfs, The Littles, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. "Dave Seville" was actually Ross Bagdasarian Sr. His son Ross Jr. and Ross Jr's wife Janice still own the franchise, and they did the speaking voices. In one of my mom's high school yearbooks, she and a couple of her friends are dressed as the Chipmunks (that was the year that "Witch Doctor" was a huge hit). I had one of the first albums Ross Jr. released after he brought the Chipmunks back, Urban Chipmunk.

I also liked Saturday Supercade and Captain N, just because video game stuff was hard to come by.

Yes Garfield and Friends is one of my top favorite Saturday Morning cartoons.  Maybe in my top five.  Maybe my number one favorite.  I dunno.  I can watch all the seasons of it on my Roku TV, so that's cool.  Better than the new movie that just came out, although I didn't think it was as bad as everyone says it is.

I liked the TMNT arcade game more than the cartoon.  But after playing the game and meeting the creators at a convention, I did watch the cartoon after that.

I never liked The Littles as a kid, but I have more respect for it now.  It's one of those cartoons that has held up better than others.  I think they even re-released it in the late 90s and early 2000s.

I knew about that stuff with David Seville and the Chipmunks, but I didn't feel like getting into it in the podcast.  Not one of my better podcasts to be sure, but at least I got something out there.

One time in Elementary School as a kid, they had "dress up as your favorite cartoon character day,' but it wasn't Halloween.  Two guy classmates and three girl classmates wanted to dress up as Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Chipettes.  They asked me if I wanted to join them and dress up as Simon.  I can't remember if I did or not, though.  It was a long time ago!

Yeah those video game cartoons back then were awful, but we watched them anyway to get our fix, since that kind of stuff was hard to come by back then.  Kids today don't know how good they have it!

On the subject of anime, the Dragon Warrior anime aired for a time in my area, but it was at 6 AM on Sunday. I got up to watch it because I loved the games on NES.

I always thought it was funny that people started who started playing Dragon Quest after Dragon Ball Z came out would ask why Dragon Quest looked like Dragon Ball. When I first saw Dragon Ball, I was surprised by how much it looked like Dragon Quest.

In my town, the Dragon Warrior cartoon came on at 4 in the morning so I wasn't going to get up for that.

One thing I forgot to mention that you brought up was when NBC stopped showing cartoons in favor of news and stuff.  I remember when that happened.  I got up in the morning to watch the Super Mario World cartoon and it wasn't on!  Oh well, guess I'll just play the game instead.  That's the reason why Garfield and Friends and Muppet Babies didn't have any seasons after that.  Not due for a lack of popularity, that's for sure.
