Confused by today's Bing's Top Three Search Images of the Day for You to Make a Mad Libz Story of (TM)?

It's spider webs, Elaine Chao, and public art. Yeah, I'm as confused as you are why so many people are searching spider web images, but hey, this game has spiders, was made by Eastern developers (Chao is the Taiwanese wife of GOP Leader Mitch McConnel, so ... whatever, close enough), and a huge part of its appeal to me is its art style, so it all works out.

So now that I slept all of yesterday to finally get some sleep and hopefully turn my schedule around (being sleep-deprived is like being shit-faceed drunk in my case, so if I've come across more rude than usual lately, that might be why), let's talk about one of my favorite games.

I've changed my avatar to "Celda" Link not for this blog, but rather to have a bit more green going on for this fine month of March, in which I was born. Plus, it has a similar art style to the caricature of myself I was using, so it keeps the cartoony, exagerrated thing going for me. Hell, Link even has a smirk.

Speaking of avatars, if you've been having as much trouble as I have getting them to upload on here, what seems to work is to upload them to facebook first, save THAT image to your computer, as opposed to the one straight of Bing/Google Images, then upload them here.

Anyway, like most people, when I first read about and saw in EGM what they were doing with Zelda for Gamecube, like most people, my first reaction was "oh, fuck you, Nintendo."

So we're going from this

to this

are we? Not to mention, I pre-ordered the thing in part because of that damn EGM April Fool's trickery that it might allow you to play Wind Waker with more realistic graphics, or something.

Fuckers

Yes, I figured it out before I actually pre-ordered that it was a hoax, butmy twelve-year-old brain, that loved Zelda and realized this thing was coming out in the U.S. just a day after my thirteenth birthday (excellent gift idea!), still half-wished they had simply updated the realistic style from Ocarina of Time; or maybe I was fully on-board at the time I pre-ordered, which would make more sense, but whatever, my college job forced me to deal with so many idiots that I've taken on some of their traits, including horrible goldfish memory.

Whatever the case may have been, I was delighted to have my fears assuaged by what turned out to be an amazing visual spectacle; my impression by the time I had completed it went from "looks like shit"to "holy shit!"

Nintendo has always been considered the Disney of videogames, for good reason, and with the art style and Zelda gameplay combination, they succeeded in creating a story and art-style that reminded me of the best 2D Disney films, and in fact, my personal favorite Zelda ... minus the overlong boat segments.

"I swear to Christ, this vacation is making me wish I were Chevy Chase."

Don't get me wrong, I love Ocarina of Time, but I was late to the party on that one (like I wasn't interested when the first screenshots hit Nintendo Power and only bought the game towards the end of N64's lifespan), and I loved the masks and dark storyline of Majora's Mask, but I'm one of the people that never liked that time mechanic all that much; it was cool at first, then it got tedious and monotonous quick.

Wind Waker though, I enjoyed both playing, and just sitting in awe of its art style, particularly in the ending scenes.

Best ... 3D Ganon fight ... ever.

I can't remember if I had played Jet Set Radio before this game. I don't think so; I remember playing Future at a kiosk, and at the neighbors' house (they had Xbox at some point), but I'm pretty sure that was after this game came out.

Should it make me feel old or young that the Future passed me by?

In any case, WInd Waker made me fall in love with the art style, and I later rented one of my favorite platformers of all time for my older brother's PS2, partly because of its cel-shaded nature.

Sly Cooper not only had tight, addictive gameplay (though it was short, I beat it a couple times every time I rented it, cause it was so good), but it looked awesome, and felt like I was playing a good-humored Saturday morning cartoon the way Wind Waker made me feel like I was playing a 2D Disney movie. It also helped that it was so inventive.

God, I loved that boss fight.

And of course, though I only played a few minutes of it at a friend's in college, Okami was absolutely stunning, and itself made me take notice of more traditional Japanese art pieces.

If I were an art collector, I'd pay a decent price just to have some of the concept art framed on my wall.

And, of course, it's helped a great deal of even games I haven't played to stand out, graphically.

The many posts I've seen about this thing, and my love for Studio Ghibli films, makes me jealous I don't own a current gen console, nor enjoy JRPGs.

How do you guys feel about cel-shading? Love it, hate it, don't really care, prefer realistic graphics (don't worry, I love the hyper-real stuff as well)?

I love the look of cel-shading for some games. Part of what makes DQ VIII one of my favorite games of all time is the cel-shaded graphics. The world is so colorful and vibrant. The full orchestral score didn't hurt it, either.

Full orchestral soundtracks never hurt. That was one of the things I agreed with BigMex about regarding Wreck it Ralph: not enough emphasis on the importance of music in gaming.

I love cel shading.  I really wish they would return to that style for console Zelda games (even though I really didn't like Wind Waker).  I think it fits the games best.  I think it's a great way to avoid any uncanny valley problems and really makes you feel like you're living out a fantasy.

I don't honestly mind either style for Zelda, I enjoyed Twilight Princess as well (though less so).

Why didn't you like Wind Waker, was it the boat segments (can't blame you) or something else altogether?

Okami is a beautiful and awesome game. I have it on the PS2 and Wii. I also have Okami Den on the DS. I would not mind seeing a new one on the 3DS.

I keep forgetting how many amazing games there are for DS I have not tried yet. I need to pick up Okami Den.

I know, there are some great game on the GBA also. Have you ever played the Summon Knight games on the GBA. They had one come out on the DS. I would not mind if a new one Came to the 3DS.

I've never played Okami but I want to.  I played Wind Waker all the way through but I never beat it.  Life got in the way.

I love the sailing though. I always wanted to sail in real life (have a couple times) and I was just in love with the sailing in the game.  I can't wait for the HD version.

I only played a few minutes of Okami, but those few minutes were breath taking. As for Wind Waker, what a coincidence, that's just what happened to me with Majora's Mask! To this day, my save file is right before the final boss, but I never got all the masks, and therefore never beat the game once life crept up on me.

I enjoyed sailing in Wind Waker up until the last part; it was a bit much to say the least.

I've never gone sailing, but I did used to ride in, go tubing, and once or twice drove my uncle's motorboat in Wisconsin. That was an awesome part of my summers.

when I lived in Minnesota we had a house on a lake and we did mad tubing.  Great fun!

Cel shading in games is great. Two of my favorites are the Borderlands games and XIII. I have a Gamecube,so I really need to get Wind Waker. My son had it,finished, traded it! Before I got my grubby paws on it. Our collections are kept seperate....so,oh well. That game really divides folks into the LOVE it/DESPISE it camps for some reason. Some like Link to only look a certain way. Look what happened with Devil May Cry. The same story with that franchise.

Never played Borderlands or XIII (is that a Final Fantasy you're referring to, or is it just called "thirteen"?), but I think, as with Devil May Cry, the hate dwindled a bit when the game released, and everyone realized how not-bad it was.

I think it's less divisive now than it was announced, but I guess you're right, there are still detractors that were very relieved when Twilight Princess came out ... and then I guess pissed off again when Skyward Sword hit? I don't know, I never heard as much of the buzz for that one, other than the fact the Zelda book focuses on it heavily, I guess.

Oh right, the French graphic novel. Man, I didn't remember that at all. Sad, I was hoping it'd do well in the States when I heard of it.

Cell shading is one of those apples/ oranges things. I love apples, but I only like oranges sometimes. Plus, strangers that see me playing a cartoon just laugh. I'm not a child anymore. So yeah, I only like it sometimes.

Super Step Contributing Writer

I'm the opposite, I love oranges, but I need to be in the mood for apples. lol Actually, dieting has made me love all fruits, but I do love my oranges best of all.

I usually play my games solo, and most of my close friends are females about the same age as myself (a few of which are exes) that don't mind watching the kiddy movies (well, the modern comedy-for-all-ages ones anyway), and probably wouldn't care if they caught me playing Wind Waker, so I don't really have the embarassment problem, since I don't play games in front of people to start with, normally.

Oddly enough, Super Mario Sunshine got a LOT more flack for being too kiddy/"gay" (not my phrasing, other people's) from my memory, and I loved that game.

I do get what you're saying though, I've been watching a Sonic Adventure cutscene and just felt embarrassed, whether or not I was being watched, so I get where you're coming from. I don't think I'd feel embarrassed by something like Jet Set Radio, though.

I did enjoy Sunshine, but never beat the game. JSR, though, is a different story. I played through the iOS version this year, and enjoyed it just as much as last time on the Dreamcast. The music was just so much fun. I guess that it really depends on the subject manner.

I like cel shading sometimes. If it's done right. Sometimes it looks like crap. Windwaker isn't my favorite Zelda by any means, but I loved it. Although all the sailing really annoyed me after so long. Sly Cooper was great. I have it on the ps3 collection. I'm looking forward to playing the new one eventually.

I only played the first two Sly games, but I loved them.

I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a cel-shaded game I disliked the look of. I'm sure they're out there, though.

I always loved the look of cel-shaded games.  I never understood why so many folks got upset when they saw the Wind Waker was going to be in that style (no offense).  I thought it was a great way to breathe some new life to the series in terms of the fluidity of character movements and facial expressions.  I really enjoyed Wind Waker when I fnally got it for my Game Cube too.

Super Step Contributing Writer

To be fair, when it was first announced, I at least only had screenshots of its build to go by, so the fluidity thing wasn't known to me at the time.

I can think of a lot of games that were close to my heart that had cel-shading. Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami are just some of them. I really enjoy the style, and find it to prove that you don't need ultra realistic graphics to be a beautiful game. I think it might turn off some audiences, but I always enjoy some cel-shaded eye candy.

Btw, Wind Waker always has a soft spot for me. It was the first Zelda I bought myself, and the first I completed. It was an amazing experience. Cant wait for the HD remake!

Dammit, I forgot Viewtiful Joe! How the hell ... ? Baaaah! lol

Now I remember that first realistic Zelda tease for the Gamecube. Poor decision for Nintendo. That still looks pretty stunning (even Twilight Princess doesn't look as good as that) and it only helped fill everyone with unrealistic expectations. Good thing Wind Waker seems to have become beloved over the years.

I also remember that EGM April fools day thing (though I think that was well after the game came out). That looks awful, I can't believe I fell for that!

I think you might be right, it may have been after the game came out, but I'd have to look it up. Again, goldfish memory. lol

Viewtiful Joe! I have the first one for Gamecube. What an interesting and colorful game. That was some amazing cel shading on that one, definitely.
