GLAD: Thor 2

Blake's blog just reminded me that I saw Thor: The Dark World in the campus theater on Thursday, and unlike the first Thor, which was my least favorite of the Marvel movies pre-Avengers, it was awesome.

The humor worked for me much more often than not, the action looked good, although I can never get rid of my production-educated brain constantly going "green screen, green screen, CGI ... that's real, though ... oooh, is that a matte painting?" particularly in a certain escape scene.

Also, Loki is deliciously evil and gets a lot of great one-liners, as does the science assistant woman and her intern. There's even kind of a subplot involving scientist guy that heads the team and was possessed in The Avengers running around in his underwear a lot.

The flick doesn't take itself too seriously and is just a grand ol' time at the movies.

Having said that, I couldn't give you a plot synopsis other than dark elves/energy and Family Ties/romance were involved

Shut your brain off and go watch it, say I.

I was going to say something else, but forgot.

I wouldn't mind seeing this for Natalie Portman. She's probably my second favorite modern actress. I don't think I need to tell you who the first is lol. I thought the first movie was pretty good, but nothing special.

Is it Sasha Gray? Just kidding, I know it's Amy Adams.

I thought Thor was meh. This one was really good, though.

Most super-hero movies are just cleverly disguised kid's movies, so as long as you don't think about them too much, they're enjoyable.

I don't know how "cleverly disguised" they are really, they're marketed to kids and adults. Other than The Dark Knight and Rises (the former of which is a cleverly disguised Michael Mann film), I don't know if they're making a huge secret of kids and teens liking superheroes. I consider stuff like The Avengers family movies: not really kids' films, but definitely something they can enjoy.

I liked the first Thor, it wasn't great, but I liked it. Thor 2 was awesome, I saw it twice at the theater (but I only had to pay once, because the second time I went on Free Resident Day).

I feel roughly the same about the first one, but I'd just say I found it "ok." If I had to rate it on Netflix, I'd want a 2.5 stars option.

What is Free Resident Day? Google is less helpful than expected.

The local movie theater has one day a year when residents of the town I live in get free admission all day.

Without getting again into an argument similar to Iron Man 3 and The Man of Steel, I will say that I enjoyed The Dark World just the same level as Iron Man 2, but I felt it was weaker than the first film and you should by now my opinions since you saw my movie blog.

Without also getting long, I thought some of the things you mentioned you loved worked the contrary for me, as I either thought they were good but not fantastic and some other didn't work AT ALL (the humor for instance).

Curious that you said you thought the first Thor is meh, since I have the contrary opinion and thought it was excellent and consider the film my second favorite of the first part of the Marvel movie universe.

I actually don't remember exactly what your opinions on Dark World were, cause I think I may have been afraid of spoilers.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I liked the first Thor, haven't seen Dark World yet but I want to.

Don't let Alex fool you, it's just a better-in-every-conceivable-way take on the original. I reccomend it. Laughing

I hate Natalie Portman. She fucks up everything shes in with her wooden acting. Loki is so good in Avengers too though.

Wow. Well, I liked her in this.

Not a fan of the first film, which is probably why I have been dragging my feet for the second. I usually wait on one of my cousins who watches a lot of movies to give me the yay or nay on it.

I watch a lot of movies, didn't care for the first one, and am giving you a yea vote.

I still need to see this one. My wife wanted to watch this when it came out in theatres but we missed out sadly. Here's to Netflix hopefully!
