Going full Hardcore mode in Diablo III

Good morning everyone,

It’s been far too long since I’ve posted on here but life, as we all are well aware, tends to get in the way sometimes. To bring everyone up to speed, a few months back, I was fortunate enough to obtain a new job in a field more closely related to my degree. It’s still a job so, you know, it sucks and all but I certainly prefer it to my previous position.

Anyway, onto the interesting stuff…

I’ve been putting quite a few hours into Diablo III Ultimate Edition on the PS4 since it released and have finally reached level 70 with my first character: Shandoss the Monk. This is my first experience with any Diablo game and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Since it released, I’ve picked up other games, namely Destiny & FIFA 2015, but keep returning to Diablo III for it’s more than addicting gameplay.

So, after listening to Julian on the most recent Nerds Without Pants podcast (check it out if you don’t already), I’ve decided to go full Hardcore mode with my next character. Maybe the term “full” might not be totally appropriate here as I’m playing on Normal mode but at times, one must proceed delicately to ensure ones heart is not broken. And so, Noelle the Crusader is born.

Hardcore mode is such a different animal that I find my approach to each conflict has changed. Instead of immediately running headfirst and headstrong into each confrontation, I now tend to hang back and take every opportunity to roll out of the battles center and pick off enemies on the outskirts. The Crusader is a better character class for this to the Monk in my opinion as they possess a large number of ranged attacks in addition to having the ability to tank. The fact that the character classes offer such variety basically ensures that I’ll go for a third character once it’s time for Noelle to hang up her (rather large) boots. I do not have any Platinum trophies as of yet but I certainly see a possibility that Diablo III will be my first. Other than the time sink, the Platinum does not appear to be tremendously difficult and I don’t see myself buying any other games until The Witcher 3 comes out in Feb.

Platinum

Diablo, will you be my first?

Anyway, for those of you on Twitter, I’ve been posting some pics of my journey if anyone’s interested. I’m up to level 19 at the moment and going fairly strong.

As usual folks, thank you for reading. I’m going to make a conscious effort to be more active on the site again. I’ve missed this place!

I've been MIA from here myself since April, so don't feel bad. As you said, life does tend to get in the way.

I love when a game hooks me like that. My current love affair is with SLeeping Dogs, a game that I never in a million years would have played if it hadn't been a freebie on Live's Games With Gold. Good luck getting that Platinum. I got my first (and only, to date) late last winter/early spring. It was a pretty heady moment, lol.

Yeah nothing has grabbed me for some time like Diablo. It's just relaxing to play so I'm not really put off by the massive time sink

my plan is to get Diablo in time for Xmas, so I can play it co-op with my brother while he is visiting.  looking forward to it.

I really wish I had someone to play co-op with as it seems like it would be amazing. My wife may but she generally prefers platformers and the sort.

Diablo III is so much fun!  It's also my first experience with the Diablo games.  I reached level 35 with my Crusader before I ended up taking the game back (rental) but I definitely, definitely see a purchase of the UEE in the near future.  I'm glad you're having a good time with it!

Thanks man. To entice you further, I will say that I found the gameplay to get more interesting as you progress. I really never became bored. Also, the number of enemies on the screen at the same time becomes pretty intense.

I like to try the hardest mode in any game because it makes you play in a totally different way. I don't frequently finish it to the end though. Good luck!

It's almost feels like a whole different game. Suddenly, theres's an element of risk introduced which I think adds to the experience. Saying that though, I am playing it at the lowest difficulty so...

One thing I really failed to get across on the podcast was just how much the game changed for me when I went to hardcore mode. Part of that had to do with how different champion is from demon hunter, but those elites that pop up out of nowhere really make you rethink everything. Good luck, man, and thanks for the shout out!

Yeah I read up a bit on which class is best after hearing your waller story. I chose Crusader obviously because they're tough so it should give me a little more time to think should things go crazy.

I do think I may go Demon Hunter on my next playthrough though. The character looks really interesting. I'll have to think of a clever name, something along the same vein as Van Helsing.

Wow.  I could have almost written the same blog.  I just got to level 69 with a Demon Hunter last night (and yes, I realize that sounded sexual.  Sorry).  Not sure if I'm going to keep going with that character or switch to a new class.  I'll probably try to get level 70 legendary equipment in all her slots (sorry again) before I move on.  I don't think I have the patience to try for the platinum, but if I get close enough, I'll probably do it.  I have so many other games, but for some reason Diablo has me hooked.

I literally laughed out loud with your "(sorry again)".

Thinking on it, I feel the differences between classes is large enough to avoid becoming stale on different playthroughs. For this reason (& the fact that i'm not interested in any game being released for the rest of the year), I don't think I'll run out of patience.

Been seeing your work and I have to say I'm rather impressed. No way I'd try Hardcore in that game when the time comes for me to get it.

Thanks dude and I bet you change your mind when you get around to it. I'm playing hardcore mode on the normal difficulty and it's definitely manageable Smile
