F-1 Race Review

I had this game. I hated some of the unfair corners in some of the courses (there was almost no way to take them without slowing to a crawl.) I think this game's big purpose was as a showpiece for the 4-player adapter.

Most of the Konami hate seems to be coming from Kojima fanboys. They do seem to be doing better in gaming. And honestly, I can see Konami's side in that. Kojima comes off as a bit of a prima donna and Konami was probably getting a little tired of him. His games also tend to be expensive to produce and may not have been giving the best ROI. That doesn't mean there wasn't fault at Konami itself - Kojima wants to do things other than MGS - but i doubt it was one sided the way it's portrayed in the press and in comments sections.

i am enjoying Metroud Dread, but there are too many QTEs with tiny windows for success.

The Zelda character who scared me the most was either the shopkeeper in Link's Awakening or the "LEAVE YOUR LIFE OR MONEY" dude. Even Ganon be like, "hasn't he suffered enough already?"

I rented Left 4 Dead once when it was new. Hard to believe it was so long ago.

Most of what I know about WarioWare comes from Smash. But y no Waluigi?

Episode 209: Nerd Saturday Morning

Stage Select:

Daniella from Haunting Ground. She is a psycho obsessed with capturing Fiona, the main character so she can remove Fiona's uterus.

When I played Doom 2, the sound of the Arch-Viles was always scary, given that they can attack you at any time when you're within their line of sight and they can see you from a long ways away.

Right now, I'm playing Metroid Dread. The EMMI androids are pretty creepy. They stalk you through certain areas of the map, and they can't be hurt by ordinary means. When they capture you, you have an extremely narrow window to escape from them before they drill into Samus's throat. The game flat out tells you that you have very little chance of getting the timing exactly right, so it encourages you to avoid them. It's a deeply satisfying feeling when you obtain the means to destroy them.

Cage Match:

Dead Space 2, seeing that it has been thrown into a hopeless situation against the almighty Resident Evil 4, decides that it does not want to meet the same fate as Quest 64 did when it faced off against Final Fantasy VII. Remembering an episode of F is for Family, when the match starts, Dead Space 2 simply lies on the mat, curls up into a ball, and starts singing "Hot Cross Buns." Resident Evil 4, disgusted, gives Dead Space 2 a kick and is crowned the winner.

Timeline Arcade Visit

I wish I'd known about this when I still lived in Baltimore. York is about 90 minutes north. I always loved Nintendo arcade machines.

There is actually a Tilt arcade in a mall near me in Phoenix, though. The lower level is all the typical redemption stuff and racing games, the top level has old-school arcade games.

The Atari Flashback collection on Switch has over 100 games. No Solaris, though, since Doug Neubauer was smart and made sure he actually owned the rights when he made it. SNK's collection is pretty robust. A lot of Taito games are showing up as Arcade Archives titles, but other than Elevator Action and Legend of Kage, I've never heard of most of them. One of them is a pirate-themed re-skin of Jungle King.

I remember a lot of Space Invader clones. Atari's version on 2600 was weird. Texas Instruments came out with its own version that Taito could probably have won a copyright infringement suit against. Gorf was a mishmash of Space Invaders, Galaxian, and Phoenix.

Fun fact: the company that distributed Phoenix in the US was based in... Phoenix.

Happy 25th Birthday to the Nintendo 64!

My favorite memory of the N64 was Super Mario 64. It was like nothing else I played abd today is still one of my favorite Mario games. My other favorites were Mario Kart, Zelda, Star Fox, and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon.

As much of a classic as Space Invaders is, it should be a regular feature on consoles. Galaga and Centipede are readily available. But for whatever reason, Taito generally makes it hard to find versions of Space Invaders that aren't on mobile phones, and I don't like touch screen controls in games. Thanks to Futurama, I will always associate Space Invaders with "Tom Sawyer," by Rush. And vice versa. This was the first time I played Lunar Rescue, but I did play a clone of it made by Brøderbund back in the day.

A Taito arcade collection would be great. Other than Space Invaders, my favorite Taito classics were Zookeeper (which I thought was a Mario game when I first saw it), Space Dungeon, Jungle Ki...Hunt, Elevator Action, and Arkanoid.
