Sizzling Hot Reviews!

Posted on 08/04/2014 at 06:47 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Yeah I've heard of Howard the Duck.  There was an awful movie about him in the 80's.  He's shown up in a couple of more recent things like the LEGO Marvel Superheroes game, and another place that I won't talk about so I don't spoil anything for anyone.  I'd probably like Howard better if he were nicer.  Plus, no duck can beat Scrooge McDuck.

It was fun to watch my brother Jeff play the Dead Rising games on 360.  They were really more silly than scary.  I like the fact that the goblin mask is making a reference to Blanka from SF2.  I also like the fact that you can wear a Servebot head.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is a fantastic game if you get a chance to play it.  Very creative.

Retro Game of the Week: Rush 'N Attack

I've played both the arcade and NES versions of Rush N Attack and didn't like either.  Way too hard.  I think it's weird that Konami now considers them part of the Contra series.

Coolest thing about the racing mini-game in Birth By Sleep is that it's hosted by my favorite Disney characters: Chip N Dale!

Well when you do the 2000's, you'd better not forget Kirby! :)

Aqua is awesome in Birth By Sleep.  At least I think so.  But then, I don't pay much attention to the story in those games, I just thought she was cool.

Thanks for reading my blogs.  I have another one up you can look at if you're interested.

RETROspective: Video Game Cartoons--The 90s

Posted on 07/30/2014 at 08:50 PM | Filed Under Blogs

All right! I've been looking forward to this!  Such a great blog.  OK, time for me to chime in.

Even though the Super Mario 3 cartoon was horrible and they got the names wrong on the Koopa Kids, I liked how they were drawn.  And while the Super Mario Super Show cartoon was mostly just movie parodies, the Mario 3 cartoon was more like the game.

The Super Mario World cartoon was absolutely horrible, though.  Yoshi was so annoying, and I like Yoshi!  The Mario World cartoon came at a dark time for Saturday morning cartoons, as this was the time the major network stations stopped showing Saturday cartoons and started showing news instead.  Cartoons that were doing very well were suddenly cancelled, like Garfield and Friends, Muppet Babies, and this one.  OK maybe it wasn't so bad. :)

I missed out on BattleToads and Bubsy, but a few years back I did watch the Bubsy pilot on YouTube and couldn't get past the first five minutes of Bubsy trying to convince the audience on how cool he was.

Sadly, the 90's was when I was in high school and college, so many of these cartoons on your list I missed altogether, due to commentments like marching band and college studying.  So i never did watch some of the ones on your list like Double Dragon, DarkStalkers, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and heck, I didn't even KNOW there was a Wild Arms cartoon until I read your blog!

There were actually 3 Sonic cartoons in the 90's.  You mentioned the Saturday morning one, but there was also a goofy weekday one that ran at the same time as the other.  Late in the 90's they came out with Sonic Underground, where Sonic sans Tails had a rock band with two other hedgehogs.  It's as bad as it's sounds.  I didn't like any of them, though, because I was never a Sonic fan.

I have to disagree with you on the Mega Man cartoon, though. That cartoon was horrible.  The opening intro LOOKED cool, but the theme song was nothing but them repeating "Super Fighting Robot," over and over and over.  They gave the robots muscles, the characters had stupid lines and the plots were even dumber.  The Mega Man cartoons were mostly written by Jeffrey Scott, who also wrote most of the Pac-Man cartoon scripts.  I blame any loss of brain cells on him.

While I didn't like the Pokemon cartoon much, I think we can all agree that it is one of the better video game cartoons.  I watched it a lot in college because I was designated as the Pokemon 'expert' when I was reviewing games for The Dallas Morning News.  So considering I was actually getting paid back then to know about it, I definitely watched the cartoon!  My college roommate cracked me up one time when they were showing repeats.  I was about to turn the TV off at the first episode, but my roommate said, "Stop, I want to see how it all happened!"  And I thought I was driving him crazy with all the Pokemon stuff.  The Pokemon game DID come out at the same time as the cartoon, though.  Just trust me on that.  I can't believe that cartoon is still on, though!

I didn't watch much of the Donkey Kong Country cartoon because what I saw of it wasn't worth my time.  But that cartoon is notable for being that animation studios' first dive into computer animation.

I thought the Monster Rancher cartoon was horrible, but I am with you about Digimon.  That cartoon was actually pretty good for what it was.  At least the first few seasons anyway.

You said you missed some video game cartoons from the 90's, but aside from the Sonic cartoons, I don't think you missed any.  Unless you counted anime, then you'd have to list stuff like Goemon and Twinbee.  But as far as US released cartoons, I'm not sure of any others you missed.  Oh wait, I think you might've forgotten the Earthworm Jim cartoon.

There is one cartoon I might've added, though.  Even though it started out as a comic book, most know it as a series of point and click adventure games called Sam & Max.  They had a one-season Saturday morning cartoon in the 90's and it was great.

Even though the 90's had awful music, they certainly had some good cartoons.  Some non-video game ones I enjoyed included Bobby's World, Eek the Cat, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Batman, and many more!  Sorry my comment post was so long, but I have a strong interest in cartoons as well as video games.  Maybe next time you can talk about video game cartoons from the 2000's and talk about stuff like Kirby, F-Zero, Viewtiful Joe, etc.--Cary
