SNES Games I Love #21: Earthbound

Posted on 02/21/2020 at 02:22 PM | Filed Under Blogs

This game was very esoteric. I missed out on its first release in 1995, and didn't get to really play it until 2013 when it was released on Wii U Virtual Console; I also have it on the SNES Classic Edition.

Recently I played the fan translation of Mother 3 on a GBA using a bootleg cartridge. That game was pretty heavy in parts. I always wished that the original N64 version had been completed. The N64 got only one or two decent RPGs in its entire lifespan.

I almost completed this in the HD version. The only things I really lacked were Yiazmat and Omega Mk. XII, the two superbosses. I had every other hunt and all the Espers. In Trial Mode I think i made it to low 80s, then the difficulty ramped up exponentially.

New Vegas was my favorite Fallout. I liked how they synthesized the mechanics and lore from the original games (that staff from Obsidian worked on) in a more modern engine, and incorporated some of Van Buren. It's too bad Bethesda acted like assholes over NV's Metacritic rating. That and THQ (original publisher of Obsidian's South Park: The Stick of Truth) going bankrupt nearly destroyed Obsidian. Pillars of Eternity saved them.

SNES Games I Love #15: Super Metroid

An absolute classic. It's a tightly designed game with absolutely no filler in it and is still one of the high-water marks of 2-D platforming and adventuring. A great story is told almot entirely with the visuals, music, and gameplay. The twist during the endgame was brilliant.

SNES Games I Love #14: Ninja Warriors

I remember the ads for this game on SNES. I kind of want to play the Ninja Saviors game on Switch.

Love, love, love his game. It's stuffed with content and I like the new graphics interface. It's been great seeing the first full blown console Fire Emblem since Radiant Dawn on Wii. Plus, I don't think you'll have too hard of a time finding physical copies for a long time, this game was a genuine success in the market and is on its way to becoming the best-selling FE of all time. I was fortunate enough to be able to get the Seasons of War Collectors' Edition.

Mario Maker was my 2015 GOTY. I always used to enjoy games that had built in level editors. Even with Excitebike on the NES, half the fun was making stupid-hard levels.  I still want to try Mario Maker 2.

I got the PSP version, since the PS1 version flew under my radar - ironically, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite PS1 games of all time and one of my favorite Final Fantasy games (I personally consider it a main FF entry alongside the numbered titles), and it was cool to finally see its progenitor.

Well I've totally blown it now.

I've blown it every year. I'm hard pressed to do a blog a month.

SNES Games I Love #13: NBA Jam

Posted on 02/13/2020 at 08:54 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I had NBA Jam Tournament Edition. Supposedly the sound had slightly fewer voice samples, but the game had a lot more options than vanilla NBA Jam, like more players (in the roster, it was still 2 on 2 during the actual games), tournament mode, and a lot more. Like you, I'm generally not a sports fan unless it's arcadey-type sports.
