Keepin' it Short April 4th

Yeah, it's easy in the U.S., since we make much of the entertainment that releases here and globally. Red Box and Netflix etc. also make it cheap. I have to say, there are many things I would change about the U.S., but the relatively easy access to pretty much all forms of entertainment is not one of them.

Most people do ... well, except my Freshman Film History Intro class and to a lesser extent, myself.

Me: A bit on the overhyped side, but I understand the hype and respect it, even if I don't necessarily love it.

Them: Basically expressed the same feelings towards the movie that Peter Griffin did on the rental copy he taped over. They (and to be honest, I as well) were not happy with the ending. Or the long road to the ending, really. lol

Yeah, but then everything is more expensive in Australia too, and I understand the argument for why minimum wage being higher might have to do with that. Then again, I can also see how more spending money could stimulate the economy. I need to read more about it, so far all I have are competing Forbes and Druddge Report articles. And all of the debates I've heard on Fox News and elsewhere, but those TV channels to me are just for fun, not anything I'd consider educational on any topic aside from basic headlines, really. Not that Forbes and Drudge are much better. but still.

Good luck in school! I will say this, it depends on what you want to do whether a degree will be worth it or not. I graduated with a radio/tv degree Magna Cum Laude, but I was behind the workforce from those with Cs who had internships under their belts, due to the nature of the field. Research before you go, cause Bachelor's don't get you what they used to. In fact, part of the reason I'm going for a Master's degree is because a lot of people think of it as the new Bachelor's, because so many people have Bachelor's now that it doesn't separate you as much as it used to from other potential employees.

I haven't, but that sounds interesting. My professor recommended I read Citizen Hearst, and I am trying to track down that book.

Barton Fink was another just alright one to me, honestly. Caught that on Netflix not too long ago. I dunno, I'm not as into the Coens as other people as much as I thought ... yesterday, when I told a girl in my class I liked the Coen Bros. I guess it's just something you say in conversation. My favorite movie of theirs is actually Burn After Reading. That one's hilarious. I wathced that with no idea what it was or who the Coen Bros. were.

Never really heard of The Man Who Wasn't There.

And yeah, Citizen Kane is one of those movies where I'm sure you can find something new every time; although I honestly haven't, and I've been looking ... maybe I'm just that savvy that I caught it all the first time?; but that's not necessarily why I watch movies. I wacth movies for story, characters, and sometimes visual effects, but when I say visual effects, someone better has a laser-monkey. I guess a better word is spectacle.

That's pretty much why I'm cool with How Green Was My Valley winning the Oscar over Citizen Kane, even if I don't agree with the politics that led to that decision. Now there's a classic movie I need to watch again.

I got in a debate about minimum wage with my professor yesterday, which started cause he asked if my ex-girlfriend who has a desk job got paid the same as I did, and at one point he suggested that people angry about financial crooks didn't understand what made them crooks and were "angry about something they didn't understand," which is a) bullshit and b) he's not an economics professor, so I think that's projection more than anything.

Neither of us really won that debate in my opinion, we just through out a bunch of hypotheticals.
