My Old School's Graduating Class Paints VG Scenes

My old public High School (I mean that loosely because I only went there Freshman year and then went to a private school) has this ritual of painting their sports equipment shack every year with a different theme. This year it was video games and so I thought I'd take some pictures of it and share them here.

                radnorshack

This is as full a view as I could get. Following are detail shots of each scene going left to right.

                 RHLS

This is the left outside wall which faces the main street that goes by the school. There's a Tetris theme going on there and an arcade cabinet style controller board. I like the way it disappears into the ground like that.

                           RHSLI

This is the other side of that same wall. LM is the initials of my High School's biggest rival in football. That rivalry has been going on for a very long time. Starting with 2SEM, the list is in reverse order.

                 RHMegaMan

Here we have Sonic. LM is, again, my school's rival in football. Funny that they put it on evil Doctor Wily's [cor. Eggman's/Robotnik's] ship.

                 RHSMB

Here we have Super Mario Bros. with Princess Peach and Bowser. That looks like a football on the top of the flag pole. Football is a big deal at my old school. The words, "It's a Senior Time" refer to the fact that it's the graduating class who paints this shack every year.

                               RHRI

A little Donkey Kong action. Looks like Mario is doubling back to get ready to jump that barrel behind him. I wouldn't climb that ladder right after the jump, though. Looks like the timing will be bad for the top barrel. I would've drawn DK holding a barrel over his head and Mario in mid jump, but that's just me.

              RHPac

Here's some Pac-Man on the last bit of wall. R is for Radnor, my school, and LM for Lower Merion, their football rivals. They really gotta stick it to them every where they can. Well, that's rivalry for ya.

I think it's interesting that a class of 2016 chose games from the very beginning of video games. All these games are at least 25 years old. I would've expected something like Minecraft, Angry Birds, Call of Duty or even Halo. Maybe it's just easier to paint these 8-bit characters. I'm kind of amazed they even know about these games, but I guess they are all iconic and timeless. At least until VR takes over and we finally enter The Metaverse.

So it's Eggman not Wily then. Ok. What do I know about Sonic. Not much.

sorry Eggman is the japanese name.  He has a different american name -- Robotnic I think.  I think Dr. Wily is Megaman's foe.

Yes, it's Robotnik and Wily's from the classic Mega Man series.

Though it's true that Eggman is the japanese name originally, the english name was always canon of sorts, where Robotnik is actually his second name but started using Dr. Eggman as an alias after everyone called him that during Sonic Adventure (even in the game at first he refers himself as Dr Robotnik).

Oh geeze. That's right. Wily is in Megaman. I'll turn in my gamer card. For shame.

I can see the Pac-man at the end, but none of the others show up for me in Google Chrome. I'll have to open Microsoft Edge and come back to see if any others show up for me.

That's funny because I use Google Chrome too. Wonder what's up with that?

Now they're showing up.

Funny how it looks like Sonic is gonna get Mario after he goes through Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (Dr. Wiley is the Mega Man villain lol). He gave the plumber a head start only to bull rush him later.

That would've been cool if they had mashed up all the video game characters together in one scene.

That's very cool.  I wish our high school did that when I was a kid.

Last year they did a Pixar theme.

That's great. Love it.

That's all very cool. I guess there must be some teachers who have grown up on that era, which could explain the choices in characters.

Amazing! This is especially remarkable because these kids would've been born around 1998 or so. It's good to see them paying respect to gaming's greatest icons.

Yea, I'm amazed too.

They did such a good job of painting that shack. The Sonic stuff especially has the spot on pixel look, and the detail of even having the school logo in pixel form is great. I'm surprised they didn't sneak in a Techmo Bowl reference in there somewhere. When you wrote Lower Marion, is that the high school Kobe Bryant went to?

Oh yea! That's right.
