Pixlbit, 1up, and sappy shit

Why do people read my shit? It's not particularly well written, it's usually trivial and it's always opinionated. I think I've gotten better these days. I tend to not ape Yahtzee Croshaws writing style as much, and I seem to not get a raging hard on for offending people like I used to. But still. There have got to be better uses of your time.

Rereading my old stuff on 1up is cringe-inducing. Not so much the blogs (though they were pretty abysmal at times) but more my interactions in the comment sections. Dear god, I was argumentative and annoying and most importantly very wrong on a lot of things. I've had very bitter arguments with people on here I didn't know so well then but do now. Like Jgusw. And Casey. And Machocruz. And a lot of other people, including a rather nasty run in with a troll who made videos about me.

Looking back there are a lot of people I still see here, but a lot more I don't. That's kind of upsetting because a lot of those people were awesome, and it's a shame I don't get to read their awesome word paintings anymore, but that's life I guess.

1up was also a lot larger. I know myself and many of you were struggling to keep up with blogs and comments (my highest commented blog on 1up is 72. My highest on here is 56. Yes, I'm petty and keep track of that shit) and in a way that huge community was great.

At the same time though, I kind of like this small community better. I feel like I know the inhabitants of these parts better than I ever did at 1up. And that's freaking cool.

Anyway, just some thoughts on how things have progressed. For now I'll leave you with the first blog I ever wrote, way back in January, 2012, entitled "Reasons Why I Dislike Skyrim" and I guarantee it's one of the worst pieces of shit you'll ever read. I didn't know what a paragraph was then.

The difference is whenever you would be a dick to anyone and we're called out on it, you'd listen. That alone puts you on the better half of the internet.

Well, if you say so. I'm good with you most of the time I guess, because I just generally accept you're probably right and I should never question you're all knowing omiscience. Still, others didn't get that treatment from me.

I've written a Master's thesis and still don't know what a comma is. I would smack myself at any age between 10 and 18. Hard. Well, maybe 12 and 18, but still. That's more than half a decade of smack-deserving. The people who notice that about themselves are the ones who reverse course in time to be fully-fledged adults. It's not something to be ashamed of.

Also, the blog and resulting comments in that 1up blog seem pretty tame and congenial in all honesty. That's not always been the case with you, but when it gets sweary, it gets goooood sometimes. haha

No, that one wasn't too bad, it was just a poorly written text dump with no pictures or space to breathe.

And yeah I think most people are like that. Young people are dumb as shit.

My blogs are more like stream of consciosness posts. I rarely re read them, and I'm probably wrong about things all the time. Having a smaller community makes it easier to respond to everyone and have a conversation, although I currently have like 99 unread blogs, but I will eventually scan through them at least. And actually I was gonna give games a rest this year, but you convinced me how stupid of an idea that was and it was worth exploring new and indie games, which I was quite snobbish about in the past.

Currently playing,

undertale

sublevel zero

soma

satellite reign

shovel knight

all thanks to you!

so, don't put yourself down too much.

Yes, but I told you that for purely selfish reasons so you wouldn't leave the site :p

Sublevel Zero is awesome! And apart from Soma and Shovel Knight (I actually don't like that game - not because it's bad I just don't like it) I haven't played any of those. I'm getting a bit behind myself haha!

And I really do like S.K., but point being, I would have ignored indie games in the past and just stuck to retro and console games if you hadn't blogged about them. Im playing mgs5 right now, but also enjoying little games in between. What happened to the podcast? I'm playing parasite eve ps1 and corpse party on psp. What have you been up to? I'm looking forward to binding of Isaac update too. So much to write about. So so much...

Well we had an ep of the podcast recorded but Joe lost his recording so we have to start again. James has been quite sick for a month and now he's coming up to exams so he'll be out for a bit. If you want to fill you can though.

At the moment I'm playing Warframe, Destiny, and Victor Vran. How's corpse party?

asrealasitgets

10/17/2015 at 03:25 AM

Played warframe last year, it got too Grindy for me and asshole community so quit. Victor vran was ok, but needs polishing I think. C.P. is very good. The last game was a pure visual novel, but this new one is more like 1995 survival horror with 3D exploration, except voice acting is superb, but in Japanese. It has a giant anime baby head char design, but pretty good. Too bad about the podcast. Seems there is so much going on that a podcast is the best way to dump it all in. It would suck if you faded away from gaming and internet.Cry

Victor Vran does need polishing but not really in the gameplay I found. It's satisfying for the most part and I'd love to see a sequel.

Warframe is grindy as shit, but part of me doesn't mind that. I don't know that it's grinding when I really like the core gameplay. Being a space ninja is awesome.

Okay I really want corpse party now!

Finally, do you want to be on the podcast?

I started an account at 1up back in 2004, just a few months after it originally opened.  I was there for a good eight years until it closed its doors.  That was a pretty sad day when that happened.  I have so many good memories of the 1up site, I could write a whole blog about it.  I think my favorite was when 1up had a little get-together party at their booth at E3 (when I could go to E3), and we all got free t-shirts (still have mine).  I even applied for a few jobs at 1up, but I was always rejected.  Oh well.

But I'm glad PixlBit was around when 1up went away so I could continue doing what I enjoy: writing about video games.  There are a few people from 1up who don't post here that I still keep up with on Facebook, but other than that, this is it.  There are a lot of people from 1up that I miss, too.

Damn, 8 years? I was only there for three and I felt it pretty hard when it went belly up. You should write a whole blog about it.

The E3 thing sounds awesome. When was that?

Cary Woodham

I know that I've written 1up memories blogs before.  I think the 1up E3 meetings were around 2004-2006-ish.

I don't remember any bitter arguments on 1up, not with you. I remember one time someone came on to another person's blog and called me an asshole because I criticized Bioshock or Fallout 3. Was that you? And I had a tendency to shit on PC gaming haters/console weaboo fanboys and their weak-assed arguments a few years ago.

Looking back at your 1up comments,  we seem to share similar tastes,on Skyrim, on Uncharted/Naughty Dog, on Dark Souls, PC games, indies. But I seem to be one of the few (kind of ) politically right leaning people on game sites, so maybe it was a political disagreement ¯\_("/)_/¯ .

Anyway, if  you blogged here like you did there, this place would be a lot more interesting.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/16/2015 at 04:00 PM

Yeah it was more than likely political, like most of my arguments with Jgusw are. But I disagree with lefts as much as I do rights and Americans have this weird thing where you either devote your life to an idea or you're a fucking communist so I guess neutralism is even more evil than the opposition (although I'd say I'm more left than right).

I don't think that was me because I was also criticising those games. Still am. Both of those games' sequels are superior, and there are better games in general.

I think your stuff is fun to read. I don't think I've ever argued with you (unless it was a joke argument). I like it here because of the people who stayed.

I started posting in music and PS3 boards at Gamespot and that was fun for a while. I created an account on IGN but didn't like the community at all so I moved to 1UP where I actually went to the trouble of adding all my games and participating in blogs.

It was sad when they got shut down but I think I like the non combative nature of this community which would probably cease to exist if it got big.

Anyway keep on with the game, music, blunk Drake etc. blogs.

I'm one of those weird people who likes arguing. I don't like agressive arguments, more a discussion where two respectful people with differing opinions talk until they both realise I'm right and never speak again. Fucking jerks.

But yeah. Despite being somewhat combatitive, 1up was still pretty darn friendly compared to everywhere else. I wouldn't mind if pixlbit was a little bit bigger though.

Tell Bilby to post!

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/16/2015 at 06:05 PM

I do. But she won't. She spends most of her online time either on tumblr, imgur or some game where you breed cartoon lions. She plays games but I don't think she's confident enough in her opinion to really say anything, and she's always complaining that she doesn't think she's actually contributing. I try to tell her that no one really is, but that doesn't help either :p

mothman

10/16/2015 at 07:13 PM

Damn that Bilby! Don't care - not confident, don't care - doesn't think she's contributing, Bilby and you are like George and Gracie. You should blog as a duo sometime. Don't dismiss it out of hand Blake, think about it. :)

I read your blogs because you are never boring. I was entertained way back when on 1up, and I figured you'd grow up at some point, and oh, look! You did.

I think I know the troll you referenced, and I was his victim at one point, too. He actually stalked me across numerous websites, and not just gaming sites.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/16/2015 at 04:12 PM

Thanks Tami, I'm glad I'm not boring.

And yeah. He went after a lot of people. He only went after me because I stood up for Aaron. I know he went after Casey, Xian and a few others, but I don't know that he followed people across other sites (although he posted things on my facebook). That's a touch weird.

I like this smaller community too.  Maybe sometimes it's a little slow around here, but like you said, it's more closely knit and it's easier to get to know people better.

keep blogging!  I need to generate more content too.

As you can see, you are very well liked around these parts.  You've always been cool with me too since the 1Up days. and I totaly agree...I really miss some of the heavy hitters of 1Up like Alice and Cody Winn.  If memory serves correctly, once 1Up announced it was going away, Alice decided that she just bring herself to invest the time and energy into a gaming community blog site anymore.  I wonder if she exists somewere else under a new name?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/16/2015 at 06:10 PM

What was your name username? I don't really remember you from 1up. I didn't really know Cody, but Alice was cool. I often wonder that about a lot of people though, and hope they're still writing. It's part of why I keep my stupid whatsacow name everywhere, so that if I bump into someone by a different name they might recognise me. Oh well.

I still follow a lot of the journalists on 1UP. I was just listening to Retronauts today and it was full of ex-1upers like Nick Suttner who's now on the Playstation Blogcast. There was also a guy at Game Informer this week talking about his career and mentioned 1UP being a place he worked at once. Seems a lot of people in game journalism came through 1up at some point.

I really liked the drunk Blake blog or blogs you did a little while ago. I'm not saying go get drunk again, but it was a fun read. I sometimes try to get looser like that but I'm always a little tight and think things through a lot.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/17/2015 at 02:34 PM

I don't really drink much since I left college, so don't expect a drunk blake blog for a while.

Yeah, I see Jeremy Parish everywhere. Like on every site I go to it seems. Didn't know about nick though, might have to check that out.

I remember your blogs at 1up, I think I remember commenting on a few. I do remember you being very vocal, if that makes sense. But I really liked reading your stuff, you were just telling it like it is and just speaking/typing about what's on your mind. Never change just because someone doesn't like you, always be yourself.

Yes, I miss 1up too. I remember visiting the site around 2004 but didn't really joined till 2010. Would of been my 5th anniversary too. I blogged for the first time there too and I was a rank A amateur at it, but maybe alot of us were. 1up felt like a home on the internet, but what I really loved was the community. But I'm glad that that community came here too. Pixlbit may be smaller, but you know everyone here. That's what I love about Pixlbit.

Glad to have you here Blake :)

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/17/2015 at 07:53 PM

Yeah I did see you comment on a few when I looked back over them. So you were there for a good while longer than me. I do wish I had have joined earlier, but oh well. I'm just glad I joined full stop.

And you're right. I don't really think there's many people here I don't know. A few fresh faces would shake things up though.

The one thing I miss about 1Up was that there was a lot more activity. It was fun to check out other people's thoughts. Pixlbit doesn't have as much traffic but I do like the athmosphere here.

I try not to read my older entries because of the cringe worthy stuff along with the second guessing of how I should have approached a subject. It's interesting to look back every once in a while, and I usually do right before my Awards Show blog just to see what I played the previous year.
