Got A Wii-U!

Yeah, I caved. Nintendo have been doing a ton of shitty things like enslaving anyone who makes youtube videos of their content, taking over half the money they earn from their videos and making sure they don't say anything bad about them. It seems weird to me, because unlike EA or Konami, Nintendo generally release good quality games that aren't riddled with microtransactions and cheap tits and gore to hide the overall genericism of their games.

Speaking of tits and gore, one of the main selling points for me was Bayonetta 2, since Bayonetta 1 is one of my all time favourite games and is a great example of how sexuality can empower female characters rather than bring them down. It's a shame the camera man didn't get the memo, but you know what? Fuck it, at least this game is open about what it is. And what it is fun incarnate. I mean jesus h. christ, I was grinning ear to fucking ear for the entirety of that opening.

Unfortunately, the opening is all I played because fucking Splatoon won't let me be. There's something weirdly cathartic to it. I can't stop playing. Even when I'm losing miserably, I don't care, because it's so fun and it's aesthetic is so appealing that I can't help but smile. I do wish it had local multiplayer for the online mode instead of just the 1v1 mode. Then I'd never stop playing it.

I've also been playing Windwaker, which is better than Ocarina of Time and if you think otherwise you're probably some neo-nazi hipster who despises fun and gets a hard on for boring over worlds and shitty controls. But I digress. I like Windwaker because Link is actually a character rather than a blank canvas who wears stupid clothes and only does things because Destiny told him. And if I've learnt anything in life, it's that you shouldn't trust what Destiny tells you to do. Destiny tells you to drink redbull, buy exorbitantly priced DLC, and that dwarves aren't really people and it's totally okay to retcon them out of existence.

But again, I digress. I also bought The Metroid Prime trilogy and a nun-chuck and wii-mote and holy cunt nugget, how did you people handle using wii-motes? I used mine for an hour and had the kind of wrist cramps I hadn't experienced since I was 13 and learnt who Summer Glau was. I mean yeah it's immersive in exploration and it feels organic, but firefights are an absolute shit-show and I keep tilting the wii-mote slightly outside of where the sensors detect so Samus spazzes out and does her best impression of being stuck in the world's bluntest blender.

But it's a testament to the game that I keep wanting to play. I haven't played Prime in ages and I haven't played any of the sequels so this has been good. I love the exploration and the scanning element and it makes me wonder why more games haven't used it. Horror games especially could make excellent use of these feature to completely unsettle you.

Finally, I bought Super Mario 3D World, but I haven't played it yet. What I will say though is Nintendo need to get better at naming things, because Bilby almost wouldn't let me get it because she thought we had it on DS. I mean 3DS. XL. Not the 2DS or the DSi or the DS lite or the New 3DS.

I really like my Wii U.  Right now I'm really enjoying Yoshi's Woolly World.  It's great.

Almost bought that today but sided with 3d world.

What, you don't have a New 3DS XL?

Great games here, but I own a good bit of them on Gamecube already. Including Bayonetta 2.

Bayonetter 2 was the best Gamecube game. Outside of Uncharted 2 that is.

I'm curious about Bayonetta 2, but I hated the first game's cut scenes.  Not because of her, but because of her voodoo pal.  Way over acted.

The italian mafia guy or the shopkeeper? Eh. You're not here for the acting, you're here for the pure insanity. And pure insanity is what you'll get.

I think the shop keeper?  Hell, I hate all the voice acting in that game. Even Bayonetta.  I love her, but I don't like to hear her talk.  :p

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Some of it has been addressed, and some of it is actively being mocked in this game. I don't mind the overacting personally, I think it adds to the games' silly over the top b movie style.

I just wish games like that wouldn't have cut scenes, would just have levels and leave the rest to our imagination, like games back in the retro era would.

Usually I would be right up there with you, but the cutscens in this have me grinning ear to ear while simultaneously causing my jaw to drop to the floor because Ican't believe what I'm seeing. They are a lot better in this game.

Nice. I want one. Metroid Prime...few games I consider better than it, console or PC. Just a great feel and look to it, and Echoes to a lesser extent. The worlds have a similar appeal to Morrowind, in feeling alien and fantastical. I find this game to also have a similar appeal to other immersive FP games like System Shock, Deus Ex, Bioshock. The game has a lot of the "values" that I like in games, like responstiveness, polish, elaborate level design, boss fights, strong art direction, environmental storytelling and puzzling. etc.

I really wish the scanning technique was aped a bit more. It's so well implemented here and makes you want to explore every nook and cranny for more than just power ups. I am loving it, but some of the bosses are terrible, especially the one on the second level with the insects. It's not a hard boss, it's just irritating, and it's one that really hurt my wrists with the motion controls.

It weirdly reminds me of Dark Souls in some ways. I can't put my finger on why, but I definitely feel it.

The scanning enhances the science fiction aspect.. You are doing research, essentially. Most games in the genre don't include anything in the way of scientific endeavor at all.

I also have the Metroid POrime Trilogy on my Wii-U as well, but I haven't played yet.  I'm too lazy to get my Wii remote and sync it to the Wii-U. I'd rather just buy another Wiimote.

Anyway, It kinda worries me that you had trouble with it, because I've kinda been on the fence about playing Prime with Wii controls. Thankfully, I have the original Prime games on the Wii and I've completed 1 & 2. Really just need to play Prime 3, but I like the idea of playing all 3 games in HD.  I guess I'l to the Wii controls eventually.

I think you'll enjoy Super Mario 3D World. My wife enjoyed playing it with me, and she really doesn't even play games with me all that much.  It's a great Mario game and really captures all the best elements of Mario's history.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/26/2015 at 11:45 AM

Most people don't have that problem, I just have minor arthritis and I work as a painter; The games are great though, and it's a testament that I want to power through them.

Yeah I played 3D world with my girlfriend after I wrote the blog. It is fun, but I see it causing arguments...

Jamie Alston Staff Writer

10/26/2015 at 11:56 AM

Dude yes!!!...Sometimes, my wife and I get a little frustrated with each other because she can't always move as quickly as I can (because my have superiour dexarity).  Or sometimes, she'll go down a pipe or through a dorr when I was trying to get a green star or something.  LOL!  So funny you mentioned the possibilty of arguments.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/26/2015 at 09:58 PM

Yep. Also I do the thing a lot of gamers do in that sometimes I zone out and when I do that I A) get better at the game, and B) don't notice I'm completely dicking my gf over for a high score. Also, we did the most hilarious thing in that she jumped and then I jumped and landed on her head which bounced me over the pit but knocked her into it. She was not happy that she lost her kitty suit.

Wow...it's like you've been there when my wife I play the gfame.  Very similar stuff happens, mostly by accident. But yeah, I sometimes get in the zone and totally forget to wait up for the wife.  She also loves that cat suit.

My favorite games on WiiU are Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and ZombiU. I also Downloaded WindWaker HD and Metroid Trilogy and they are both super good.
I've been playing MarioKart8 and Smash Bros lately.
I honestly play the 3DS more because it has more games, JRPGs, that I prefer as well as VITA.
I usually play on the controller screen exclusively if it's available as I found it to be convenient to just chill on the bed with a headset on at night or at my computer desk for a few rounds of something, mario kart, smash. etc.

As for metroid, I think it's suggested that you adjust the wiimote sensitivity to very loose so you can rest your arm and slightly move your hand  for aiming, at least thats how I found the controls more tolerable. You can also make the HUD more transparent to see more of the world better. Gosh, Echoes is just insane tough? What the hell were the devs thinking? It was super hard then and now, it was like Dark Souls for Nintendo, when games used to be hard. I've been meaning to weekend marathon through it because I just love the atmosphere and ambiance. One of my favorite worlds to explore, especially that whole dark world mechanic.

In anycasy, the wiimote settings are accessed from the main menu outside of all the games I think? Too bad they edited out those sweet, sweet intros to each games. My favorite part of starting up those games.

And, good god I wish you were podcasting about this, but I'll just give it a rest already!

Hopefully I will be later this week. I've got some interested parties finally so it could be happening. Also, again, I'm extending my arm to you whenever you want to be on. Not this week though, since I possibly have 4 people on. I was also on Casey's podcast which should be up next week sometime.

I shall try that. I haven't finished 1 yet so I haven't tried 2 with the motion controls, but now I'm a little scared to. I almost bought monster hunter but I bought 3d world instead so I could Co-op with Bilby.

If you have an empty seat available some time in the future, I'd be glad to join.
What do you use to podcast by the way? You use fancy mics and software? You can add me on PSN too. You can see all the games I'm playing on there with the new PSN social facebook interface thingy

I just use my headset and use skype recorder to record. If you have a headset and skype, you're good to go.

I shall add you on PSN when my PS4 gets plugged in again. Much love for my Wii-U atm.

I loved the WiiU when it first came out. I keep the gampad on the charger on  my computer desk and just play off-TV on the gamepad itself, at least when games allow it.

People love to dump on the Wii U but there are a bunch of great games on there. 3D World in particular is such a fantastic couch co-op game. I'm sure you and Bilby will have a blast with that one. Mario Kart 8 is really good too, and I say that as someone who despised MK Wii.

I played Bayonetta 2 earlier this year and it is indeed superb. I've been on the fence, though, about Spatoon. Maybe I should get that. Been meaning to play that copy of Captain Toad too...

Anyway, yeah, there are lots of fun games on the Wii. Good choice!

The Wii-U is a terribly made console with some terrifically made games. There are a lot of things the console does that makes me want to hate it but good lord the games are so good!

I will probably get Mario Kart at some point.

Nice, congrats, I own a Wii U as well. I bought mine at the end of last year, first Nintendo console I've owned since the NES. I own every game you mentioned as well. I agree that the Metroid Prime Trilogy would be a lot better without the motion controls. I was playing the first Prime and couldn't even figure how out to open the first door and gave up, lol. For some reason, I couldn't get into Splatoon, it didn't interest me. I didn't play much of it as a result. I have been meaning to sit down and play Bayonetta (have't beat the first one yet), MGSV keeps that from happening.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Don't worry, MGSV has kept a lot of things from happening on this end too :D.

What about Splatoon didn't interest you?

Congrats on the Wii-U! It sounds like you are having a lot of fun with your new toy. I need to try Bayonetta again. Yeah I'm not a fan of the Wii controls either and I almost did a spit take with the Summer Glau comment.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/29/2015 at 12:26 PM

Haha I hope that's a good thing and it wasn't you being repulsed at the thought of me masturbating. If it was that I'm sorry for putting that image in your head again :p

And thanks! You should play Bayonetta again, and not for reasons that would thematically tie this comment together!

I forgot about the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii-U. I want to see those in HD. I may wait for a price drop though since the NX dev kits have just come out and Nintendo will probably announce the new system at E3 2016.

I'm also real excited about the news that Dragon Quest XI is coming to PS4. That's a system seller for me there.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/29/2015 at 12:40 PM

I think HD is a bit of an overstatement as Metroid Prime 1 still looks really low res, but they're at 60 fps and all together.

I did not knowthat. But I am excited now too!

Bayonetta 2 is fucking awesome. The end.

And Wind Waker is still one of the best games ever made.

As with on twitter, congrats! Glad you're enjoying it. Splatoon is reallyfun, we can play sometime if you want. WWHD is just awesome. 3D World is awesome. If you haven't, get Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, definitely the Wii's finest and my all time favorite Nintendo games.

I have the Trilogy disc, the only thing stopping me is a broken nunchuk controller. I also recommend Captain Toad, Smash, and MK8. Oh and DK Tropical Freeze if you want a great 2D platformer.

I am really late to the party on this blog, but welcome to the Wii U generation! If I would like to make a recommendation, grab the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 port.

I've got the original Wii trilogy and maybe it's me having that one as basically my 7th gen console, but I never had a problem with the motion controls. For me they work fantastic and are well done.

Eh only by a month :p

Yeah I'm ok with them now haha, they just took a bit of getting used to.
