Destiny. . . but Minecraft

I bought Destiny for Xbox 360 today. My friend Mark got it and played it last week. He was really uninterested in it until a friend of his got it for him and he tried it. Now he's super enthusiastic, and, well, that means I'm going to get into it too. But not today. Today was all Minecraft on Xbox 360 and my trials with my Star Wars Edition 360. More below.

                             destiny

Destiny was $14 at Gamestop used. Lasertime's Vidjagame Apocalypse podcast was free.

I decided to hook up my Star Wars Edition Xbox 360 today, so Mark and I could do some co-op. we played Ticket to Ride yesterday across XBO and X360, but that only lasts so long. I played the XBO edition of Minecraft, but Minecraft is so much fun in co-op, I had to plug in the 360 for that. Well, my R2D2 360 went into a coma and wouldn't come out of it. I could hear its sounds, but the power wouldn't come on beyond that. Luckily, I had a warranty at Gamestop and swapped it out for a 320 GB 360. I got to keep the C3PO controller though. That was good.

It was easy to get right back into Minecraft on 360. I still had my original hard drive in it, so no redownloading anything, just a license transfer which took two seconds. Then I jumped into Mark's world he had been working on all day yesterday. I did my usual mineshaft-to-bedrock dig and lava museum design. See pic.

             Lavamuseum

Let me describe what's in this image. This is my base at bedrock, the lowest place you can get in the game. To the right is my ladder to the surface. It goes directly up some 40 or more bricks with space enough to freefall into the pool of water at the bottom of the ladder. It's slow going up, but super fast on the way down, and no damage taken. To the left is my crafting table, a chest for storage and several furnaces. In the background is what I call my lava museum. I inevitablly hit lava down at bedrock, so I fence it off and let it light the rooms. It looks fantastic. I use it for fuel in the furnace as well, but it can be dangerous. I lit myself on fire once. Luckily I had that pool of water there.

After going a little crazy, being below the ground so long, I decided to see about above ground activities. This screen shot below shows how it turned out..

huntingdogs

Here's the entrance to Mark's house he built. I fenced in some cows and a chicken to get milk and eggs there in the background. Why? Because I wanted to make that cake you see on the pedestral near the door. You can take a bite whenever you need it. I had to range far to get more sugar. That was one of my daytime activities along with building a railway to the mines and blowing holes in the ground with TNT.

At night is why I have those dogs. I tamed the five of them shown there with bones harvested from Skeletons. I have the pack sit during the day, but at night I take them with me on a wild hunt for Creepers and the gunpowder they carry. The dogs don't attack Creepers but they'll attack all the other mobs. It was fun watching them pounce on Spiders, Skeletons, Witches, and Zombies. I had to heal them up with meat after every hunt. I even bred a few and had puppies, which I also had to feed so they would grow. I got into a pretty fun rhythm: cake baking in the day, Creeper hunting at night. Then, when I had enough gunpowder for several TNTs. Mark and I would go out to some location and blast holes in the ground. Yeah! It's like a hillbilly dream come true.

Mark manged to find enough diamond to make a set of diamond armor so he could venture into the Netherworld to battle Ghasts and look for the Nether Fortress, which has a lot of stuff in it. I would look over to see what he was doing from time to time.

And that's about it for today. Lots of Minecraft, but probably enough for now. Next weekend it'll be Destiny for sure. I want to check that game out finally.

Right now I'm playing an old Wii U game I downloaded when it was on sale.  It's called Steamworld Dig and it's like a cross between a 2-D Metroid game, Dig Dug, and Minecraft.  So if you like mining games, you might want to give it a try!

I'm amazed at the subtle improvement of full HD in my new TV. I had a 1080i TV before that and the upgrade is significantly better. Plus I added some sparkle with the editing tools on Flickr.

Oh Destiny. When I tried the demo I really liked it, pre-ordered it, played it a week, and lost interest. I should have traded my vanilla copy for the pre-order bonus of the Destiny with all the DLC for $40. I would have given it another chance. Oh well. I think you and your friend will get a lot of fun out of the game.

I have plans to play Assassins Creed II this weekend, but when friends request other things, like Destiny, it's going to be hard to resist that.
