BaD Eight: Destiny

I've played about ten hours of Destiny so far with my friend Mark. I'm just working through the story missions and bounties with Mark. He's level 24 now to my 14. He's able to mop up on the missions I'm doing. I try to get my kills in before he blasts through them. I kinda wish we were the same level, but that's how it goes.

I played a round of PvP in The Crucible. It's not a mode I particularly care for. It just seems mostly the same round to round. I like to explore while I shoot. So I'll stick to the story missions.

I'm really liking the environments in this game, from outdoor areas to cave systems.

Going up to space in your ship between missions is neat, but it's not much more than window dressing on a load screen. Still, it's cool.

I'm finally getting the hang of the aim controls and am ripping head shots with my sniper rifle quite easily now. I just picked up a pulse rifle to use for close quarters that's pretty cool. I like a lot of bullets (be they metal or energy based) flying outta my gun.

I'm playing as one of the robots that became self-aware. My head's all metal with some metal horns. I quite like that. It's funny in cutscenes, when I see my character talking and then look over at Mark's screen, and the same cutscene is going on, but with his human character talking instead. It makes me chuckle every time.

The original or Taken King?

I don't understand that. Isn't Taken King DLC? Thing is, when I booted up the original version of Destiny, the title screen now says, Destiny: The Taken King. But I don't have the DLC for the Taken King missions yet. I guess the whole game was basically remade with all the updates and now it's called Destiny: The Taken King and not just Desitny. Anyway, I'm still playing through the main missions.

I think they update it every year. So if you have the Taken King disc ...

When I saw Destiny: Taken King on the title screen, I looked at my disc to make sure I had the right one. It was just Destiny on the disc. I almost bought the GYE, or whatever it's called, version with the DLC on it, but I got the cheap original version instead.

Huh. I know Destiny is a brand new style of game release, where they update it every year all on their servers. I guess as long as you pay $60 somewhere you get the Taken King stuff as well? Now I am confused ...

I got the old original Destiny used at Gamestop for $15, but after all those updates, the game is now called Destiny: Taken King. I've never had a game that had so many updates that it became a different game. That's new.

It's a ten-year agreement between Bungie and Activision to continuously update the game.

From Wikipedia:

Prior to the official release of Destiny in September 2014, Bungie declared that a major component of the game would be a continuous release of new content. Bungie Director of Production Jonty Barnes said: "We're going to continuously update the game from now until the end of time. That's always going to be part of the philosophy of Destiny. We always wanted to build a new universe but keep building upon it, rather than to do a complete and utter restart periodically."[76] By the time of Destiny's launch, two planned packs of downloadable content (DLC) had been officially announced: The Dark Below and House of Wolves.[77][78] From the launch of Destiny, players could purchase the Destiny Expansion Pass, which included the first two expansions at a discounted price versus buying them separately.[79] Players also received an exclusive sparrow (EV-30 Tumbler) if they purchased the Expansion Pass or The Dark Below by January 15, 2015.[80] At E3 2015, Bungie officially announced a new expansion called The Taken King.[81]

Cool beans! I love Destiny. I think the feel of the gunplay is just about perfect. As for the content, the Taken King DLC informs the whole package whether you have it or not but it basically amounts to a second story campaign. Bungie introduced a lot of quality of life updates then as well, like being able to carry more bounties and turn them in as soon as you finished them (you used to have to return to the person who gave it to you and that was so much bother) and also the quest system. So though you're playing the content from the original Destiny right now, you're reaping some of those benefits from the Taken King. Are you playing on the Xbox One?

Going to orbit might be just disguising a load screen but I love how everything in the game stays "in narrative." It's not like Call of Duty, for instance, where you just pick separate modes from a menu. There's even a narrative explanation for PvP and I think that's really cool.

I'm still on Xbox 360 because my friend doesn't have a XBO yet.

There's even some dialog that goes on during the warp travel segments. Yes, it does all seem to fit together nicely and doesn't feel a bore.

Hey I think we're at the same level (I stopped playing a week after it was released and haven't been back) I agree with the going into space portion. It was cool thought.

I'm level 22 as of today. I keep wanting to explore the world, but there's little to find there. Yes, there's some loot chests and a few plants and rocks to harvest, but it's not a lot. It's more just about shooting. That's ok, I guess.

who doesn't love self-aware robot soldiers?

Yea, who cares for meatbags when you have low maintenance humaoid robots. I find those working humanoid robots scattered around the Tower and other hub locations kind of sexy. I guess because they seem kind of naked, being just bare metal frames.
