BaD Eleven: PSP

There was a Retronauts podcast I listened to today all about the PSP. I clearly remember getting one to play Untold Legends, a kind of Diablo-like action RPG. I wanted to play it co-op with my friend Mark over wifi and we did that, playing the first game in the series to completion. It worked really well, but I kept bumping the slider on the right side and disconnecting myself from the wireless. Battery life wasn't great, so I think we both had our PSPs plugged in.

After that I was into the Patapon games. I still have all three of them.

Then I rented a bunch of games like Star Ocean and Lunar Silver Star Harmony. I finished Lunar but didn't Star Ocean.

I still have a bunch of games to play on the system, but I have a problem with the one I have. It frequently interupts gameplay to ask me if I want to return to the home screen. I have no idea why it does that, but it seems like if I grip the system too hard, or twist it at all, the message appears. It's really annoying. Luckily I have a backup I got from somewhere, I forget now just how I got it. I may try that unplayed, new, system and see if it gives me the same problem. Nothing is noticably out of place on my current PSP.

My only issue with the system is it does seem a bit fragile, and that UMD disc drive does seem sensitive to jostling. I kind of wish it was cartrige based like the DS.

In any case, I'm happy I still have it. Gotta play Jeanne d'Arc sometime.

Aside from the Neo Geo Pocket Color, the PSP is one of the few handhelds that pulled me away from Nintendo's Game Boy/DS juggernaut.  Here are some of my favorite PSP games:

Loco Roco 1 and 2

Mega Man Powered Up

Gurumin

Ys Seven

Half-Minute Hero

Work Time Fun (abbreviated WTF)

Oh I know there's more but I can't think of any right now.  I loved being able to play import games on it, too, like Taiko no Tatsujin.

I have the same issue with mine. I try to not grip it so tight but, if I am playing a God of War game I put the squeeze on it and the screen start popping up. If you find a way to fix it, let me know.

Love the PSP! The one hardware problem I've always had with the 1000 and the 3000 series is the funky nub that keeps pulling left. I never tried playing over WiFi but I did Beta Test the multiplayer of Killzone, which was fun.

I am still deciding if I want a Vita, 3Ds, or just stick w no handhelds

My favorite is still the 3DS. It's so easy to use and has a ton of games. Then there's the online store, and Mii Plaza, and now free-to-play games. It's just fine and friendly. I mean, I love the screen on my Vita, but I hardly ever play it for lack of games I want to play. Being able to play PSone games on it from the store is really appealing however.

My PSP 2000 has a messed up screen but the launch model I bought for my son is still working fine so I use that. I have tons of stuff for it. Mostly digital but I still have some UMDs left.

I didn't really download much on it. I mainly have a pile of UMDs, but maybe I could get rid of this home screen interuption with a totally digital game.

I hacked my PSP 2000.  The umd drive was acting funny, so I bought a 8gb memory stick, learned how to hack the system, and play digital versions of the games I own off the memory stick.

Retronauts talked about that. It was a good system for emulators apparently.

I have certainly enjoyed my PSP. I just wish I had more time to play all the great RPGs on there!

Back when I wanted to upgrade from my Gameboy Advance to the next handheld, I had chosen the PSP mostly out of how advanced it was and some of the games i've seen before. Although I did miss a lot of the DS catalogue, I don't regret getting the console since it still gives me joy to this day.

I never had a hardware issue, but I did mention in a blog here that my D-pad stopped working last year. Before that, I had from 2011 or 2012 a problem with the d-pad, where sometimes it would always go left or chose the action assigned to the left D-pad on continous use of the damn thing. Good thing I went on to change my PSP to one that's been working very fine with me.

It is a bit fragile, but I love the screen, just like I love the screen on the Vita. I've got to figure out what's wrong with mine though. Those interuptions asking me if I want to go to the home screen are super annoying, and I'm not sure what's causing it.
