The only reason why you may want the starters if you get Disney Infinity is that the starters come with an extra clear figure that acts as levels and worlds for your figures to tromp around in. Otherwise you're just stuck in the toy box hub world.

So later on that day I got my first Disney Infinity figures on sale, I put together my list of Skylanders I'd like to have. Then I couldn't resist going to Gamestop again right before work and getting a bunch of Skylanders. While I was doing that, I saw a Disney Infinity figure I hadn't seen earlier and had to have that. I got seven figures for $20. That's a nice price. Here's the picture:
Upper level is: Blades, Hex, and Zap. Lower level: Ignitor, Sunburn, Voodood ahd Hulk.
My Skylanders list was all core characters. I figure I'll work on those first.
As for Disney Infinity, I realized that I don't really need the starter kits. I can get the portal for about $3 and Disney Infinity 1 or 2.0 for $10, and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow. Used copies of 3.0 haven't come in yet apparently, so I'll wait on that. I'd like to sample all the playsets of the old games anyway. That'll be my next thing, getting at least one character for each of the playsets.
