Video Game Print Ads

I just love scanning things and what better thing to scan than video game print ads. I picked up the comic, Time Warp #1, this week and scanned two game ads, Bioshock Infinite and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Ever since I've gotten into comics, and that not too long ago, I've been scanning any video game ads that I find. I especially love the old ones but sometimes the new ones like these are interesting too. The ads become a bit of history as time rolls on and sometimes they use unique art assets and designs that are really interesting. I'm always interested in the visual medium and having these on my computer enhances my experience of these games.

Who knows how long this last vestige of print media will last, comics are already going digital, but until my comic store closes, I'm still going to pick up old and new comics and keep an eye out for interesting video game ads like these.

I'm not a huge fan of all this going digital business, but I would like to scan an old EGM ad I remember to have it for myself.

That ad isn't the one I'm talking about, but the ad was about jumping from a plane, and kissing your ass goodbye was one of the steps. It was in a November issue with either Halo or Halo 2 on the cover and provided laughs for my friends and I on a field trip way back when.

I have to sometime find a flea market with old gaming magazines. I so miss them.

Those are pretty cool. I often end up spending lots of time looking at random arcade flyers online, which are interesting for the same reasons.

I remember all the crazy print ads for games in GI JOE comics in my youth...  they seemed so intense at the time, but just come across less so now. Still, they are beautiful to me, especially in my memory.

I have a box of clippings from game mags going back for a decade. I saved every image I thought was interesting, clipped them out like coupons. I plan on making a massive mural with them someday soon. Guess it's only a matter of time until all the physical game magazines are replaced by digital ones. The Brits still do them up really well. I find those at Barnes & Noble. Big,colorful artwork and photos in them. You should see the stuff they did for Bioshock Infinite. Amazing!

Print ads are one of the many, many reasons that I collect classic EGMs. Most of the ads in the '90s were truly dreadful. And by "dreadful" I mean "amazing".

There's some really awesome ones out there. Some of them are not so great though. Like, I found two the other day but they just weren't interesting enough for me to scan. I'm usually attracted to an interesting design and sometimes just because it's of a game I like.

I love going through old mags and seeing the ads for games.
