Disney Infinity is Dead They Say. Long live Disney Infinity.

So just as I begin playing Disney Infinity 3.0, they cancel the whole series. In fact, Disney is cancelling their whole games division. That's just crazy! D.I. was beating Skylanders for Pete's sake! Well, it seems toys-to-life stuff is dipping in sales across the board and they're getting out before it gets worse. I for one, am still crazy for toys-to-life stuff, so here's what I picked up today:

                              boba

I got Boba Fett yesterday actually and paid full price for it. It was the last must-have figure for me. I should've waited though because today Toys R Us is having a 40% off all figures sale. Well, I went over there anyway because the Play Set Expansion packs were also 40% off. I got the Toy Box Takeover and Toy Box Speedway packs for about $10 each, as shown below with my Gamestop buys gotten a little later in the day.

Back: Toy Box Takeover, Toy Box Speedway. Front: Force Awakens playset piece, Inside Out playset piece, Rubble Rouser, Magna Charge, and Wallup.

These D.I. 3.0 playset pieces and figures are super hard to find used in the wild right now. It's like someone who heard the news a few days ago went around and cleaned out every store in my area. I don't really need any more figures though except for those that come with the playsets and aren't sold in single figure packs. These are the ones you need to start the playsets. I saw none of them at all used in my local stores for miles around. I really can't afford $40 for these playsets so I'll have to wait for a sale. I'm sure one will appear very soon, so I'll be checking daily.

To fill out the 5-for-2 sale, I got some Skylanders I don't have. Magna Charge was an expensive one, but I had to have it eventually. It's apparently one of the more powerful characters in the game. I was trying to find more SuperChargers figures, vehicles with the figure that goes with them, but i couldn't get two together at the store I went to so I went with other stuff. I'm not in any rush for Skylanders, just Disney Infinity 3.0 right now. I'm told there will still be an Alice Through the Looking Glass and Finding Dory playsets to come but I was so hoping for a Rogue One playset. I guess that's not going to happen.

Well that's a day. Good flying. Pixl-Aces!

I guess it is sad that Disney is stopping their games division, but I never tried to get into the Infinity games anyway.  I can keep up with amiibo and that's it.  Although it would've been cool if they had figures I would've liked, such as Scrooge McDuck, Darkwing, or Gravity Falls characters.  One good thing about all of this is that third parties can start doing more Disney stuff again.  Step it up, Capcom!  Crank out that Rescue Rangers Remastered!

I'm hoping they let someone remaster Lion King and Aladdin on Genesis personally

I got in when all the sales started happening last Fall and got kind of caught up in it all - Skylanders too. I noticed in 3.0 there is a Darkwing Duck motorcycle in one of the Toy Box levels. I rode it and it plays the theme song while you ride. Kind of cool. I would've got the figure, if they'd made it.

I hear they are shutting the servers down too. What does that mean for my kids that just got into the series?

Nooooooooo! I was wondering about the servers all day today. That'll make Marvel Battlegrounds totally useless. At least I think it will since it's all about multiplayer. Fans of that are going to be angry. It just came out! I'm feeling like it could result in a law suit. You can't sell something that requires online, or is heavily dependent on it, and then turn it off, making it useless barely a month later.

I may try some multiplayer tomorrow to see what happens. I didn't use online that much in the other D.I. games. Mainly just enough for the related achievements. I guess I'm not getting those achievements now.

It appears they will shutdown in June. So get to playing.

I did today. Only one online related achievement left but there seems to be no one playing it right now. Guess I won't get that one.

I kind of wanted a few of the Infinity figures like Wreck-It Ralph characters, and my wife was kind of interested in trying Infinity, but so far, the only game-to-toys I've made any kind of investment in are Amiibos, and I started my Amiibo collection with the Wolf Link that comes with the Twilight Princess HD CE.

I like Amiibos a lot but there's not much you can do with them in the games. Nintendo needs some kind of Skylanders/Disney infinity like eperience to really get me on board. I did buy the Olimar amiibo though. Couldn't do without that one.

Infinity would have been more popular if the licensing restrictions (the ones that kept the different properties separated except in Toy Box mode) didn't exist.  That just confused the shit out of the majority of consumers.  I could maybe understand not being able to use Disney characters in Marvel or Star Wars levels, but you couldn't even use Avengers characters in Spider-Man or GotG levels.  It made absolutely no sense.  Disney has been weird about that since the beginning (in Kingdom Hearts, only Donald and Goofy could go into the different movie-themed worlds due to them being actors or some ridiculous excuse).  Same with Infinity's Toy Box mode--since the characters were considered "toys" in that mode, they could cross over.  Anyway, that was a big turn-off for potential customers, and the fact that earlier figures were hard to find once the new game came out didn't help either.  Even with that, the games were pretty successful, and I think the cancellation had more to do with internal politics and corporate restructuring than sales.  The figures looked pretty nice.  Disney could probably create a line of statues/toys that looked just like those and sell them even without a game.

They're so careful about their brands. I kept looking at my Hulkbuster character wishing I could use him in the Star Wars playsets. I guess the maketing gurus would consider that a corruption of their property, eroding it's ability to sell because of the confusion of brands. Everything's made with such a darn committee of suits, but, I guess, that's what you get in entertainment. The buck's the bottom line, as always.
