In the space of a week I find myself with 2 3DS games vying for my attention, those being Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.

DQ VII

The 3DS version of DQ VII is a sigificantly updated version of the classic Playstation RPG and SMT IV: Apocalypse is a sequel to the 2013 original, set some 25 years after the events of the first game.

SMT IV A

If you played the original SMT IV you can upload your save to the new game (from the old cart or an SD save file) and it will give you bonuses based on such things as your choices in the first game, how many times you played through it and the endings you got. (Everybody say cooooooooooo. ) I only played through once so we'll see what bonuses I get.

I thought about trying to split my time between both games but I see now that it will be damn near impossible to do so.

The fact is there is just too much to do and remember in both games and I'll never be able to keep it straight.

So which game to choose. I've already invested about 10 hours in DQ VII so it might make sense to stick with it. Then again when do I ever do things that make sense.

How do you like Dragon Quest? Would you recommend it?

If you are a fan of Dragon Quest then absolutely. This is one of the best I've played and it looks really nice on 3DS too.

I've never played the series actually, but have only heard good things. Can you start anywhere?

Pretty much. The stories are all standalone. I played VIII on PS2 first. Then IV,V and VI on DS followed by IX.

I have I, II and III on my Android tablet but I haven't really played much of any of them

I'm loving DQVII right now. I'm about where you are in time played. It's been pretty easy so far but I've heard the main game is like 70 hours, so I imagine it'll get plenty tough eventually.

I put in well over 100 hours.

I can only imagine how the game will keep expanding as I go on. I was continually amazed at how DQVIII kept giving you more and more content even after 90 hours or so. It really overwelmed me. I'm only at hour 15 or so in DQVII right now.

I just got SMT IV Apocalypse in the mail a couple days ago.  I haven't really started it yet though, trying to finish a game on the vita before I go all in.  I wish I remember more of the story from SMT IV, but it's been too long so I hope I don't miss out on much when it comes to references to the first game.  I think I got the neutral ending.

I am on the fence about buying DQ VII, as I still have my PS1 version and I played through it not all that long ago.

I didn't play the PS1 version but I'm blown away by the quality of the 3DS version. It is so much more than could ever be squeezed out of the original PS.

I've been enjoying DQ7, I just kind of got bent out of shape at the fact I got all the way down the dungeon to save the alltrade abbeys real priestess and I died at the boss. Pretty disappointed ?? I was doing so good before that. I'm trying to think up a better way to go about it. I'm getting Yokai Watch 2 today, I'm excited to play the sequel.

I find it annoying that there are no save points before bosses. The best you can do is evac and then quick save but then you have to find your way back to the boss again.

Early on it's no biggie because the bosses are pretty much pushovers.
