My GOTY Shortlist is a long ass list.

Christ on a bicycle its been a good year for games. I've been thinking of what i was going to put on my top 10 games of the year list and this is the not narrowed down list. This is the list of every game that I like and think people should play. There are a lot. Over thirty, and I have the feeling I've forgotten something important.

Oxenfree - A fun little ghost story with some really damn good writing. I like how naturally conversations feel and that they don't feel stilted like they usually do in choice driven games. I'm looking at you Commander Shepherd!

 Shadow Warrior 2
- The newest game on the list. It came out yesterday. It is better than it's predecessor in every way. It's punchier, more varied, funnier, and it now has loot! And not like Borderlands loot where every weapon is obstensibly the same but with stat changes, no! These weapons are drastically different. I have twin swords that shoot lazers, cyberpunk pistols, automatic shotguns, claws, a canon, and a ton more. There is a ridiculous amount of variety on display here, and then you have gems that add stat effects and entirely different fire modes!

Oh, and you can move faster than you can in DOOM, it's gorier than DOOM, and dare I say it, maybe more fun than DOOM...

Doom - ...But DOOM is still fucking Awesome. God, it's a good year to be a fan of old school run and gun shooters, and DOOM nails it while adding some awesome new features. It's punchy, it's gory, it's satisfying as fuck, and the only real negative I have with it is that it could be a bit more varied.

Overwatch - Hey, it's Team Fortress 2 but better in every way.

Uncharted 4 - Maybe the best in the series and Casey is wrong.

Dark Souls 3 - Maybe the worst in the series and Nick is wrong. It's still Dark Souls though, so it's awesome.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Even though the story is garbage and the Black Lives Matter analogy was really poorly thought out, it's mechanically maybe the best in the series. Also... I just love cyberpunk.

Firewatch
- If you were disappointed by the ending, you weren't paying attention. Or you're an idiot. This game is fantastic.

The Witness
- Man, I don't think I've ever been as excited as I was in opening hours of the Witness. That sense of discovery and wonder, and the knowledge that everything had a purpose and that I would one day discover that purpose and conquer the world!
Unfortunately, I'm not a rocket surgeon so this game broke my brain, my pride, and my marriage. Which is weird, given that I've never been married.

Darkest Dungeon - Goddamn this is a good game, and reminds me of why we used to like turn based combat. Also, the best use of sanity mechanics ever.

Stardew Valley - I played this game for 18 hours straight one day. That's all you need to know.

Superhot - It turns first person shooting into a puzzle game. A very fucking awesome puzzle game.

Salt and Sanctuary - It's like Castlevania if Castlevania was also Dark Souls, which it kind of already is... so it's the best non Castlevania Castlevania game since Castlevania. Also, maybe the best Souls game this year.

Momodora: Reverie Under Moonlight
- A seriously great Metroidvania with an impressive atmosphere and extremely satisfying gameplay.

Ratchet and Clank
-Unfortunately, it's a bit of a disappointment. The originals were funny and well written. This is not. It still plays exceptionally well though.

Alienation - Maybe the best Twin stick shooter I've ever played. It also has loot. Loot is awesome.

Severed - The guys who made Guacamelee return with a game like a seriously fucked up mix of Wizardry, Zelda, and Infinity Blade. It's great.

Duskers - A rogue-lite where you play as drones and control them with command prompts may be one of the most tense and atmospheric games I've played all year.

Total War: Warhammer
- It's Total War and Warhammer.

Furi
- Imagine playing Shadow of the Collossus but while on LSD with an Isometric camera and a combat system kind of similar to Bloodbornes.

Inside
- Better than Limbo, this game is dark, oppressive, and utterly enthralling.

Necropolis
- it sucked on release, but the devs fixed it. If you like Zelda, Dark Souls, or
Spelunky, you should maybe check this out.

Earth Defense Force: 4.1 - A video game ass video game, and some of the most fun you will ever have. Leave your brain at the door and shoot some giant ants.

Quadrilateral Cowboy - Brendon Chung has a new game. It's about spies. All his games are about spies. In this one you hack things. It's cool.

Hyper Light Drifter
- Imagine if Zelda had an amazing vaporwave pixl art and was hard as balls.

Valley
- Imagine if Mirrors Edge was good, and was also Tribes.

Redout
- Imagine if Nintendo released an F-Zero game again. They won't, because they're the worst, but this and Fast Racing Neo have you covered.

Rive
- You shoot robots and it's fun and really hard. I like fun really hard games in case you haven't noticed.

Grim Dawn - It's like Diablo 2. Which means it's far, far superior to Diablo 3.

Enter The Gungeon
- Like Binding of Isaac for people who are offended by Binding of Isaac.

Fractured Space - Like DOTA 2 but in space. And also not shit.

N++
- Like Super Meat Boy but... well, it's a lot like Super Meat Boy. I think this game came first though, and I should maybe research things before I type shit, but I highly doubt you're reading what I'm typing this far down. I could say anything realistically. Mohammad is just a slightly more handsome Jesus. There, I said it.

XCOM 2
- It's like the first one but really really hard. It also ran like arse on release for some reason.

Rise of the Tomb Raider
- It's like Uncharted 4 but worse in every conceivable way. It's still ok though. I know it came out last year, but normal people who aren't idiots can play it this year.

That's a lot of games, and I haven't even played some of the ones that look really good that sites say are really good. I also still feel like I'm missing something for some reason. I'm also really quite sick of typing and maybe bit off more than I could chew for someone who's been awake for far too long.

Goddamn, dude!  You are so much more productive on the gamin front than I am. I envy that.

I think I have Oxenfree, can't remember.

These all sound like great games and I love your descriptions.

That Furi game sounds crazy.  Looking it up now....

I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going to be my Game of the Year.

Yeah, so many great games have come out this year and it truly feels like there's stuff for everyone. Have you played stardew valley yet?

When it comes out on Wii U I may play it.  I know it's coming there.

I had a laugh out loud moment reading your description of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Eventually I'll get back to it and finish it. I have Total War Warhammer in my Steam Library and I started a little bit of it. Just like Tomb Raider I'll get back to it.

I'm hoping there will be sales on Uncharted and Firewatch during Black Friday. Those are two games I want to play.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

I didn't finish it either. I should probably fix that by the end of the year.

Hopefully you do. Firewatch especially should be a bargain. If you have a PS4 it's on sale at the moment.

I have a PS4, but I want to play it on PC because it seems like a game that could be a lot of fun to play while traveling.

Darkest Dungeon has released on ps4 so Ill actually be able to play it. Im quite excited about that. Stardew Valley is amazing, havent been able to update my game though because reseting a password on steam is bullshit. Im waiting for them to contact me after i gave them my information they needed.

There is still a lot of games I need to play from this year.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

That's really unfortunate since the new update adds so much awesome stuf!

I'm just waiting for you to replay Uncharted 2 and 4 close together and admit I was right. I don't see you admitting RotTR is better than 4 though even though it is and remembers it's a video game. Also play ReCore. It's a very you game.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/15/2016 at 07:06 PM

I played Uncharted 4 right after I played 2 and 3. 2 is great but that last 3rd is actually dreadful.

I should play Recore. I don't really like buying things from the Window's Store if I can avoid it though. You should play Shadow Warrior 2. If you liked Doom you should enjoy this.

GOTY already? Jesus on a pogo stick! That's a really great list you got there. I didn't know Shadow Warrior 2 was out. Darn, I need that. Just think, next year EDF 2017 will come true. I'm suiting up as we speak. EDF! EDF! EDF!

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/17/2016 at 09:44 PM

Shadow Warrior 2 is one fo the best games I've played in a long time, and it's pretty cheap too at $39.99.

Oh man. This was the first EDF game I've played. I definitely need more. I found playing it while listening to Amon Amarth was an amazing experience.

I see it's coming to consoles but it's not on Gamestop's books yet.

I'm late as always, so I haven't gotten a chance to play any of the games released this year. I am very interested in quite a lot of these (though some of them i'd rather not bother for reasons i'd also rather not bring up).

I almost bought Oxenfree on the last Summer Sale, but ended up going for other choices.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

You don't have to mention your reasons, but which ones don't you want to touch?

Alex-C25

Firewatch, The Witness and Darkest Dungeon. I would leave it at that please.

Alright man. Sorry.

Ehh don't worry, it's just that I hear enough drama and discourse of gaming that I really don't want to involve them here that much lately.

Dark Souls 3 hater, sort of, I guess. Also, Nick is right. Dark Souls 3 rocks.

Just started Severed and goddamn is it good. I fucking love Drinkbox. I've played some of these games, but not most of them. Salt and Sanctuary is totally on my must-play list. But really it's mostly because I need to keep playing Souls or Souls-like games. I have a problem.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Dark Souls 3 is objectively better than Dark Souls II in almost every way, so it's not the worst. It's just the least surprising. To me, it was the series feeling annualised, and proof that some of the great things from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls would just never be seen again.

It seems like world design is never going to be on par with Dark Souls again, thanks to the use of warping. There's just no need for shortcuts or interlinking worlds if you can warp everywhere. Unfortunately, that means less surprise and cohesion, and it means one of my favourite things in the original has been removed for the sake of convenience, which seems to be the antithesis of Souls design.

There also seems to be less surprising narrative moments or secrets that fundamentally alter things. We no longer have things like Dark Anor Londo, or unflooding New Londo. We no longer have things like Astraea or King Allant, where the game will forgo challenge just to unsettle you or provide lore.

The game world too is the least varied in the series too, and I found only one area truly surprised me, and even then, Bloodborne did that secret better.

Dark Souls 3 has improved the series a lot in terms of gameplay, but unfortunately, they've lost a lot as an experience. Dark Souls isn't my favourite game because it's challenging, but because of the atmosphere, the surprises, and the overall experience.

-P.S. Both Salt and Sanctuary and Momodora are very good 2D Souls-like games. If you're still hankering for Souls after Salt and Sanctuary, I highly recommend giving Momodora a shot. It goes on sale quite cheap at times.

I think the world of Dark Souls 3 is really interesting and I appreciated navigating it and seeing the places where things did interconnect. Sure, Dark Souls 1 does that better and that definitely plays a part in why it's my favorite. I thought that the lore on display was pretty fascinating in how it linked back and brought cohesion to the entire arc of the games.

Broadly speaking, all of the games provide the same thing to me, which is a challenging quest of exploration and discovery. There's all sorts of hidden tidbits to uncover, whether it's hidden areas or pieces of story or gear or whatever. Regardless of the game of the series, they all do that stuff incredibly well. The extremely tight gameplay mechanics and the wide variety of build types and play styles make all of the games extremely fun.

With Dark Souls 3 in particular, I felt that they meshed the best parts of Bloodborne's mechanics with the best parts of the more traditional Souls mechanics. This made the gameplay experience extremely enjoyable and the game just felt like an incredible step up after Dark Souls 2. I literally had to stop myself from playing the game a fifth time through after it came out and just move over to finally playing through Bloodborne. To me, that's a pretty clear indication of how tight of a grip Dark Souls 3 had on me.

I think it just comes down to what you want out of the games. While all similar, DaS 1/2/3, DeS, and BB all offer something a bit different and their differences make them unique and interesting to me. First and foremost, I'm a gameplay guy and I think Dark Souls 3 really did it best in the whole series. But as an overall experience, there's just no question that Dark Souls 1 has the best stuff on offer.

I do think that one of the worst decisions they ever made in the series was moving back to having that Nexus-style hub space. Leveling up at a bonfire was awesome and made them feel so much more important in the grand scheme of the game. While Firelink always felt like "home," it didn't play a special role, other than being a centralls located area where other parts of the world looped back to. Majula was a weird cross of the Nexus from DeS and Firelink in DaS, but DS3 and Bloodborne's central areas were totally isolated from the rest of the world, which was a shame. I hope if there's ever a new Dark Souls or another Bloodborne-type spin-off they reassess this decision and leverage the original Dark Souls blueprint.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

You're right. Part of me has to wonder too that maybe this has a lot to do with my expectations, hype, and possible burnout. When I learnt Miyazaki was back, I just assumed we'd go back to the way DS1 did things with bonfires and exploration. I thought that because Bloodborne was a different series with different narrative goals, that's why it had a hub and that DS3 would put things back the way they were before. I was extremely disappointed when I had to teleport from the Firelink Shrine bonfire, especially when it actually connects to the rest of the world.

I thought, fine, we have a hub, but the rest of the world will be super tightly interconnected, Again, I was disappointed the moment I finished the first area and had to be teleported to another level. The rest of the world is connected, but none of it really loops back around to other levels with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions.

I was also super keen for Dark Souls 3, which lead me to play a butt ton of Souls-like games in the lead up, like Salt and Sanctuary, the other Souls games, and even Lords of the Fallen. That possibly lead to a bit of a burnout with the series, but even when I feel like going back to the series, whenever I try to play DS3 I get bored and go back to DS1 or Bloodborne.

Also, with this game, I actually dislike the gameplay. I like Souls because of how it rewarded slow, strategic combat. This seems to actively discourage it. It plays more like Bloodborne and I dislike that a lot.
