Man, people really love Nintendo. To the point it seems like they can do anything and people will support/endorse them.

Release HD ports of gamecube games for full price while condemning other for releasing them at half price? Gotta love Nintendo fans.

Charging exorbitant amounts of money for individual "classic" games while other companies like sega or SNK release them in bundles for half the price of one game? That's absolutely fine.

As is the fact that Nintendo games generally cost more than other games on release AND NEVER GO DOWN IN PRICE! To the point that retail copies of FUCKING WII games are still $120 here.

As is the fact that Nintendo will actively try to claim income for any youtuber who posts any video of anything even remotely featuring something of theirs unless they agree to become a corporate shill, hand over a large portion of their income and only say positive things about them. Again, that's fine if it's Nintendo, but if EA, Activision, or Ubisoft does this they're literally Satan.

Or what about the fact that they had a pokemon themed birthday at a cafe shutdown?

Or what about the fact that their console interfaces are extemely poor and their idea of what the internet is is funamentally backwards.

I could go on and fucking on, but it doesn't matter. Nintendo fanboys will defend literally fucking anything I say.

Nah. Just got something to talk about for once, plus I don't understand how Nintendo fans will jump on things other companies do but turn a blind eye when Nintendo does similar things.

I'm not sure. I think one thing is the quality products Nintendo puts out. Have these products diminished in recent years, like Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D World, and the Wii U?  Yeah, I would have to say they have. But a lot of us have been lifelong fans of the company, having been introduced to them as children, and been provided with almost endless hours of joy by them.  Is it a mixed bag?  Yeah, definitely.

Ninendo is defintely a conservative organization. They're unusual though because sometimes they take daring risks. It is frustrating that they're games rarely get discounted. I finally bought Pikmin 3 when it hit $20. It took four years to get to that price.

Most that stuff is pretty shitty but the games not going down in price isn't something that's as bad in the States. Many games keep their value for a long time, but only the rarest games stay expensive.

I think you're likely blanketing all Nintendo fans, when all Nintendo fans certainly don't feel that way on all of those topics. I'll take myself, for instance. The way they handle YouTube is poor and misguided. They should embrace that platform and support YouTubers who effectively help in advertising their games.

Their pricing models are poor as well. Games need to come down in price over time. It creates a market where, as a fan of their games, I'm in the unfortunate position of buying at full price because it's unlikely I'll ever get the game cheaper in the future. I've been burned a few times with that too, which sucks, but generally I'll stomach that because they make games I enjoy greatly. Their Virtual Console pricing is equally poor. They should be selling those games extremely cheap and they should have a more robust offering of games that cross platforms.

When it comes to their interfaces for control - I love them. I know a lot of people don't, but I enjoy playing games with interesting new interfaces. Are they always perfect? No. But they hit for me more often than they miss.

Their internet offerings are SIGNIFICANTLY better than they've ever been before. I can honestly say that my internet interactions from the Wii U have been no different than playing games online for the the PS4. Not sure what else people want on that front, but the Wii U was no Wii when it came to online play.

Otherwise, I find them to be one of the only reasons I'm still interested in console gaming. Their games are quite enjoyable and their approach to console gaming is unique and interesting. The PS4/X1 are just shitty PCs. I have a PC that I can play games on and it's better than the PS4/X1 in every imaginable way.

I get you feel differently, but all Nintendo fans are not mindless drones. Do we accept some shitty stuff the company does? Yes. There's really no option when you enjoy what they bring to the table. To personify the company, they are very much like an oddball auteur. You're not going to love everything about them, but you accept their flaws/quirks because their art is so great.

Yeah I know they're not all the same, it's just the kind you see most. Probably because they're the most vocal.

By interface, I just meant general UI. Navigating menus and settings seem really unintuitive. Maybe it's not for Nintendo fans, but from someone on the outside, both the Wii-U and 3DS are a clusterfuck to navigate.

And yeah, honestly your right. Again, despite appearances, I don't hate Nintendo. I really don't. It's just that Nintendo fans on other sites drive me so far up the fucking wall I just feel like pointing out they aren't perfect even if it is just venting for my own sanity.

I understand. Some people are so obnoxious about Nintendo it's hard to stomach. I used to write for Nintendo World Report, so I get it totally. There are many straight up apologists who accept everything Nintendo does as gospel and will actively hate other games that are blatantly good, just because they're not on Nintendo systems.

The internet can be a horrible echochamber like that.

Damn, shots fired re: PS4/Xbox being shitty PCs. Lol. I wouldn't say shitty, but I definitely respect Nintendo for actually making, you know, console games and not watered down PC type games or wannabe movies. Same goes for Sega, when they're not making mindbogginbly poor decisions.

I know people get their panties in a bunch when you say something is dumbed down, but this is exactly what happened to PC games when the original Xbox came out. Compare Deus Ex: Invisible War and Thief 3 (still a good game) to their predecessors....

Do you read Sean Malstrom? His views are similar. He's highly critical of Nintendo, but he recently wrote a rant saying similar things.

I've read some Malstrom stuff years ago. Can't say I'm much of a fan, but I am familiar with his work.

As far as the X1/PS4 comments, I guess I'm sorry for coming off so harshly, but it really is the reality of it. Fundamentally, they are walled gardens that offer nothing better/unique to the PC world. No mods, limited compatibility across console lifecycles, worse graphics and framerate, and fewer games. The only thing Sony has going for it are first party efforts, which have been very thin this gen. Bloodborne is literally the only reason I own a PS4. So, yeah.

At least Nintendo seeks to differentiate itself from being a pared down PC and I have an appreciation for their efforts to continue being a real console ecosystem. Unfortunately, they've done a lot to alienate third parties, so they've had weak showings for multiple generations on that front, but as I said, I have a PC for that stuff. Although, I would love to see third parties leverage the unique hardware, like we saw on the Wii, but that's a different discussion altogether.

I like my PS4, but even on PS4, most of what I buy and play is from traditional console developers, mostly stuff from Sega, Namco, Square Enix, Koei Tecmo (KT is a shockingly good developer this gen, BTW), SNK, or NetherRealm Studios.

Aren't retailers controlling the prices? They might think it's a system for kids, so might as well rip off the parents because the kids are going to beg for them until their parents decide not to pull more hair out from the incessant nagging. When the other systems have games that are targeted towards the teens/adults which have no nagging powers, and will be more careful about the limited money they can spend, thus their prices go down. Pure speculation of course.

Also, I'm a Nintendo zombie, I don't go gaga over every thing that is Nintendo.

Maybe Nintendo fanboys are the most vocal about the good things Nintendo has because that's just how the group is.

Quite late to the party on my adoption of the Wii U. Paid $300 and got Mario Kart with it. I think there are maybe two games in my collection I paid more than 70 bucks for, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage. The rest of my 19 physical games I got for $40 or less. A couple of them were between $10 and $15 dollars.

I also have 40 or so physical Wii games for it and a pile of virtual console retro games and eShop games.

Mainly I buy games because they look like fun whether it is for my PS4, PS3, Vita, 3DS or Wii U. I may not agree with everything that gaming companies do but as long as they make games I think are fun I'll continue to buy their devices.

OK, except for Microsoft but I've hated them since long before they made their first console. Don't need to go into it because "it just doesn't matter"

Most of us here are a little bit long in the tooth to be fanboys. That's one of the reasons I come here. It is generally free of console wars bullshit

Like I said above and elsewhere, there are many things I think Nintendo is stuck on stupid about (will they get their heads out of their asses and make a not-lazy 2D Mario and decent Metroid for the Switch?), but I respect them for their game design chops and philosophy. They're not making movies, they're not failed filmmakers, they're not trying to make PC games that have none of the depth and complexity of actual PC games. They are still making bonafied console games. Remember when PC games and console games were mostly very, very different? Sure you could play Sim City on SNES, but for the most part two completely different experiences.

As a company, Nintendo does a lot of things I don't like.  But they end up making the majority of the games that i'm interested in, so that's why I still buy their stuff.  But I don't always side with Nintendo.  There have been times that I've preferred another console.  Like the original PlayStation or the Xbox 360.  I just go where the fun games are.

I don't agree with a lot of what Nintendo does, but most of what I don't agree with isn't that big of a deal to me. I don't approve of big companies muscling little kids' parties regardless of who it is. I do wish they'd replace most of their Nintendo of America staff and hire people that have experience in doing business in both Japan and the United States, like they used to have when Howard Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa were in charge. I don't care much about online gaming other than fighting games but I can appreciate how tone-deaf their approach to online infrastructure is. Most of what I would like them to get with the program with is more in line with making them competitive with MS and Sony and ensuring a healthier ecosystem. I wish they would treat Metroid better, but given the fact that Metroid has never been a sales blockbuster they've actually been pretty kind to the series overall.

That said, they make a lot of games I enjoy very much, and they make a lot of games other companies won't touch. Zelda will always be my favorite overall video game series, Mario is unrivalled in platforming. There are other "lower tier" series like Fire Emblem, and Nintendo will also try ideas that generally only come from "indie studios," only they're not also hamstrung by poor budgets like most indie games are. They also do as much as companies like Xseed, Atlus, and NISA to get smaller tier games out of Japan and into the US, especially since Operation Rainfall, and given that I like very little of what's produced in the US and Europe these days, that's important to me. I also appreciate that Nintendo doesn't lick EA's asshole like a chocolate ice cream cone the way Sony and Microsoft do just because of EA's exclusivity with the NFL and FIFA.

And at the end of the day, I buy Nintendo's stuff because they make games I want to play. As long as they bring goods I like I'm willing to forgive them some shenanigans. Sorry... but not sorry.

I think Metroid could be bigger, but my ideas would probably infuriate some of the purists. Like a lot of games from Japan, the aesthetics are something that are hard for westerners to get past, I think. But not because they are too Japanese, because they aren't. But the colors, the designs. Good because it's different, it's own thing, but bad for sales. But I think a more "realistic" art direction could be interesting. Think Interstellar or even the first two Alien films (already in inspiration for the games, but more familiar to the masses). Personally I think they would do well to continue the Metroid game design philosophy (labyrinthine levels, progresssion based on abiltiies) in another property, with a new aesthethic, new protagonist, new monsters*, new weapons/abilities.

*The Metroid creature was always kind of cartoonish. That's one of those visual things that I think didn't grab the masses.  They want the Giger stuff or something equally monstrous.

That's what Nintendo does, and their loyal fanbase goes crazy. I always joke that people will buy the same Zelda game over and over again because its now on the new console (of course I also bought GTA V on the PS3, PS4, and PC). Nintendo found that sweet spot in the market and that's what they cater too. The bad part about this is that I don't think they are willing to take that next step and create a console that leaves that sweet spot to compete with Sony and Microsoft.
