DQ VII Progress, DQ Builders Rage Quit, Skylanders Trap Team

I've been making slow progress on Dragon Quest VII on 3DS during the week. I just got to Alltrades Abbey after 26 hours of gameplay. So far I haven't been mightily challenged by the game but there's been a few moments when things got tense, and I nearly lost my party. Be prepared, when doing seemingly mundane things, like searching rooms and opening chests, a rare surprise might have you fighting for your life when you least expect it.

This weekend, I tried to continue in DQ Builders and was successful for a time. I created some rooms and got to level 4, which allowed me to go on a quest for materials to build bombs and start a multiwave battle with monsters who attack the town. I got several waves in and then kept blowing myself up with the bombs. You place it in front of knights and large golems that you can't hurt with your sword. Thing is, bombs have a very short fuse, and they make the ground a cratered mess. I'd get myself trapped, and then killed, by the blast. It really annoyed me. Then I thought I'd better raise my town to level five so I could create the armory and get my villagers kitted out. Well, I tried to keep within the boundaries of what I was pretty sure was the original town, but I couldn't get a barbeque kitchen to register for points. Then I moved a doorway to my stonemasons workspace and suddenly that wouldn't register either. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I really got fed up and just stopped.

So I switched to XBO and tried to play Minecraft with Mark, but I kept losing the connection because maybe there was some issues on Xbox live today.

That's when I returned to Skylanders: Trap Team and stayed with that the rest of the day. I got my Krypt King figure to the level cap of 20 and found his soul gem to unlock his ultimate upgrade. Then I switched to Wallop, whose soul gem I'd already found. I raised him to level 5. Along the way, I unlocked the rhythm game where your figure takes the stage with a band and you play a simplified Guitar Hero style game. I was able to play on Expert without too much trouble, but as I unlocked more band leaders, it got harder; nothing like Guitar Hero hard, though. I also unlocked the Skystones Smash card game. After playing the Superchargers version, this was even simpler, but just as fun. I'm really loving the environments in Trap Team, very colorful and charming. I'm playing on Medium difficulty right now, but I'm thinking of switching it to Hard again. Certain bosses are a pain at the level though, so I may just leave it be. I've been sticking to the one figure until I max out its upgrades, but I'm thinking now I should play the game as it wants you to, which is to switch figures often. I think tomorrow I'll use that method because I know it will be essential to beating the game on Nightmare difficulty. Plus I want to see more figures in action. Their special moves are really interesting and fun to use in battle, not to mention the wonderful voice work.

That's a day. Bye.

I'm working on reviewing Skylanders Imaginators right now.  Also, Netflix now has a new Skylanders cartoon called Skylanders Academy.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying a game called World of Final Fantasy.

I might check out the cartoon. I love the character design. Much like I love the character design in Dragon Quest. Similar whimsical style.

I played the demo for World of F.F. and didn't like it, but it had some interesting features. I liked capturing enemies. I just couldn't figure out how to make them give me new abilities, or feed them. I put them in my stack, but they didn't add anything to my abilities. What gives?

There are skill trees for each monster that you have to fiddle with to unlock their abilities.  But it's pretty easy.  If I can figure it out, I know you can!

I'm sure if I spent more time with it, it would be clear, but I really want it to be clear from the start. I also didn't much go for the graphics which is a killer for me. Seemed kind of low on the detail like it was a handheld game blown up for console. I liked the monster designs though.

You got to Alltrades a lot faster than I did but then I tend to grind even when I don't need to and I like going back over areas to make sure I haven't missed anything. Especially mini medals because they net you some cool stuff once you find Maximo's Castle.

Everything gets manageable once you have a few vocations under your belt. Kabuff and Kazing come in handy having a couple of allies with Sap works well too.

I'm 110 hours into DQ VII and I'm almost done the last pedestal. I've just encountered my first liquid metal slimes and beaten about 5 of them. 10000 experience each. :)

I don't think I'm near the end though.

I've been trying to avoid every random encounter if I can. There's enough of them already that I'm a little bit annoyed. I've picked up quite a few mini medals because I search everything everywhere. Good to know they'll mean something later on.

I'm at the point now where all but the toughest enemies run away from me, plus you can throw out some holy water if you want. Trust me, grinding is good. I'm at level 41 now.

I'm at 17. Yea, the Holy Water. I could do that. It's kind of fun to try and run around the monsters on the map. Sometimes they chase you around, and sometimes they are too fast for me to escape. Ha ha. Come and get me biaches!

Just beat the demon king today. Nope not at the end by a long chalk.

Dragon's Quest, I never played any of those games before. Traditional JRPGs tend to be these huge undertakings that I just don't have the time for.

I hear ya. DQ is especially guilty of the excessive length of play.

I got to get back to DQ. I really love it, but have been writing nonstop and playing D&D.  I did play a bit of Pillars of Eternity lately.  But I gotta get back to DQ. Such a lovely (though sort of sad) world.

I call it bitter sweet. I'm still trying to resolve Alltrades Abbey at the moment.
