News:

First I played the trial for TellTale’s Guardians of the Galaxay game. It was fine. I’m not getting it until its all five episode are out though. I noticed the characters don’t exactly resemble the actors in the movie. That’s probably due to likeness licensing fees. They still look good though.

Then I knocked off two more achievements in Civilization Revolution. First I finished the “win with only one city” achievement. I went for the economic win and built the World Bank. Once I knew how to use the workers, it wasn’t that hard. Then I tackled the “develop a city to produce 200 resources per turn” one. This took some interpreting. I thought it meant combined economic, cultural, and science resources but what it really means is 200 production, which is a different factor. I failed it the first time and thought it was impossible so I read up on it. Turns out, if you change to communism you get a 50% boost in production. I didn’t know that. So I played again and managed to do it. I could’ve stopped when the achievement appeared but I continued. I nuked a city and swept all aside with tanks and planes for the Domination victory. Apparently, as a Democracy you can’t nuke a city because you can’t make a declaration of war, but as a Communist state this is no problem. Turns out, though, you only get one nuke. I kind of wanted to nuke the rest of the civs just for giggles. “I’m Duke Nukem, baby.”

Memory:

Thinking of Xbox in 2001, its release year. I could mention Halo, but I’m still in the marathon and will mention that plenty later on. Another Xbox exclusive from ’01 was Blood Wake. Remember that one? It was a boat combat game. It did a “next gen” job at water graphics. I know I tried it but I don’t think I played it that long. I think it was on an OXM demo disc too. Lovely water.

Meet “team undead” from Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure:

skydead

Hex, Cynder, Ghost Roaster, Chop Chop

Hex was once an exceptional elven sorceress. She was so great at spells that the Undead Dragon King Malefor wanted to kidnap her. He sent minions to find her but she eluded them until one day she got sick of running and entered the underworld to fight Malefor. By going there she became undead herself and in her fury at this defeated Malefor. She returned, still undead, and became a Skylander to protect other magic users from evil. She is mistrusted by most, but Master Eon knows she is good.

Cynder is a violet undead dragon. When still in the egg, she was abducted by The Undead Dragon King Malefor and brought up to do his bidding. Cynder was the villain in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. Spyro defeated her and released her from the influence of Malefor. Spyro convinced Master Eon she had a touch of good in her and he made her a Skylander; although, most of the other Skylanders stay clear of her just in case. Her story is actually very similar to Gamora’s in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Ghost Roaster was once a chef named Olaf. One day, while looking for sheep for his famous sheep-wool stew, he fell down a slope and ended up in the Valley of the Undead. Loving food, he became a very hungry boney ghoul. He saw a town of puffy white spooks and ate them all up. The town’s leader made him pay by attaching a rattling spiked ball to him to warn others. Master Eon took pity on him and made him a Skylander. One of his powers is to turn into a flying flaming skull. That makes me think of the Lost Soul enemies in Doom.

Chop Chop is an undead Arkeyan, a race of machines defeated by the Giants centuries ago. He was one of the few elite guards left functioning. He got bored and left the underworld to seek new orders. He wandered for centuries until he met Master Eon who made him a Skylander.

so they have undead skylanders?  and undead machine skylanders?  PRetty cool.  PRetty imaginative stuff, I think.

I never played Blood Wake. All those next gen water games always die a... watery death, ha ha.

Looks like you sucked the marrow out of Civ.  Good job!

Yea and there are undead, machine, magic skylanders too. Well, techically the Arkeyans are both magic and machine, so Chop Chop is all three.

What is it about water? It's always problematical in games. I guess we're land creatures and like land games. If Dolphins made video games they would be the best at the computer design of water and all their games would be based on Ecco The Dolphin instead of Zelda or Doom.

I've got five achievements left. One is practically done and the rest are about winning on Deity difficulty. It's weird because last I played it, probably in 2009 because I saw a save file labeled that, I had trouble beating it on King difficulty, two levels below Deity. It must've taken 8 years of my brain silently working on it to produce this kind of mastery in 2017. But we'll see if I can handle Deity level.

Yea, you need at least a century to become a master at civ.

Team Undead has cool designs.

I like the fire and tech characters as well, but there's cool characters in every element. I call them elements but their really just categories. There are 8 of them: Fire, Air, Earth, Water, Life, Magic, Tech,  and Undead. Those divisions are the same in every Skylanders game, although there is a Light and Dark category in some of the others but those are for special figures and there aren't many.

Blood Wake! I remember watching like G4 or whatever it was when it was an exclusive video game channel and they were interviewing Aisha Tyler and she was playing it. That was the first time I saw the game and thought it was cool. Years later I ended up buying it, and it is a lot of fun. I think it was one of the first XBox games I finished.

That's cool. I know I still have the demo on a OXM demo disc. I wish I had time to go back and play this game again. I really don't remember what I thought of the gameplay, only that I doubt I finished it.

Sounds like Master Eon will make anyone a Skylander.  I could probably go up to him and say, "I can touch my nose with my tongue and this morning I saw a helicopter."  And he'd say, "You're in."

What would your name be then? Helilicker?

No I was just trying to think of two unrelated and unimpressive accomplishments.

I get it. I just wanted to come up with a Skylander name. I think it's really interesting how they named each character. I contemplated the fact that my user name here is just like a Skylander name.

You could be a character in Supercharged.

You know what's weird? I heard on Antiques Road Show about the Hot Wheels "super charger" which were faux service stations on the tracks that had wheels inside to propell the cars faster. I think Skylanders: Superchargers must be making reference to that. I mean, it's too perfect.
