New VG Plan

I got myself overwhelmed with game choices again, and so I’ve got a new plan to get things under control.

First off, I’ve cancelled my Gamefly rental membership. I like Gamefly, but what I don’t like is thinking about how long I have a game out while I’m playing. I always feel pressured to finish a game quickly with a rental even if it doesn’t have penalty fees. I cried pulling Fire Emblem Echoes from my 3DS, but the plan must go on.

Secondly, I’m choosing one console and one portable game per YEAR to get new. I like the idea of sticking with a single game for a long time. To this end, I’m trading in almost all my current gen games to put a preorder down on Agents of Mayhem (XBO) and Culdcept Revolt (3DS). Now, I’m also really keen to get Wolfenstein New Colossus and Crackdown 3 this year, but I think Agents might be just a tiny bit more fun. Wolfenstein will be great but crazy violent, and I’m just not encouraged by recent news of Crackdown 3. I think they may have been too ambitious. They hired Joseph Stanton to do writing for them recently just a couple months before release. I don’t like that at all. But, I may break down come October and November and trade Agents in with some other stuff to get one of those. It slightly breaks my rule but I’ll find a way to keep the cost down to a minimum.

Thirdly is retro. I’m on a retro kick with music by focusing on one year a month starting with my birth year. I’m on 1974 this month. So, I thought I’d do games too and focus on one retro title per month to match the music year. What was going on in ’74? Just Pong and the rerelease of Magnavox’s Odyssey console. I don’t have my Pong console anymore, and I don’t really want to get another one. Pong is really a multiplayer game anyway. But I have Pong The Next Level for PS, and I have a new PSOne I got from Mark. I think I’ll get that working and check out that game.

And if that doesn’t keep me going long enough, I made a list of the pass times I had when I was 7 in 1974. Aside from Pong on the TV, it was: TV, slot cars, model rocketry, and model of the month club. Maybe I can find something video gamey to do along those lines.

I’d like to mention that Dungeons & Dragons came out in ’74. I didn’t include it because I wasn’t aware of it then. I only started playing that in high school sometime around 1981.

Yeah, I got rid of GameFly for the same reason parents won't get their kids Mickey D's. We've got stuff at home, son!

I have ended up accidentally following your second rule with Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Pong was '74, huh? Cool.

And D&D I associate more with the 80s, cause I think that's when the "it's of the devil" talk kicked into full gear along with metal being popular.

Well, Pong came out in '72 but it was the biggest thing going in '74. I'll probably be stuck with Pong until '77 when Atari 2600 came out. That will be November.

I never played the original D&D. I started with Advanced D&D which came out in '77. 1977 btw, is quite the year. Lots of interesting nerdy stuff debuted.

I hope your new plan goes well, i dont think i could do that but I have found that having my goal for beating so many games in a year keeps me focused on finishing them. I was thinking of getting Agents but I might wait.

It's interesting to think of that one game that might be the most wanted for a whole year. I just think Agents might be the better Crackdown game this year. Certainly they nailed it with Gat Out of Hell and Saints Row IV.

I don't know if I could buy just one new game a year.  I usually buy maybe 3 or 4 I guess.  That's not so bad. It could be worse. I buy games on sale though that I haven't gotten around to playing though.  Have you seen this new game Senua's Sacrifice, about the Celtic girl?  Looks sooo cool.

I've already given up on the idea. Too many good games. I started with one, then I saw a dozen, now I have fifty I want to try. What's a gamer to do?

Thanks for reminding me. I forgot that was a Ninja Theory game. On the list!

Pong on the PSOne is surprisingly creative.  So is the PS BreakOut game.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that Breakout game. Maybe when I do 1976 in October.

There was another really big important thing that was created in 1976. :)

Ah yes, my nom de plume. I can play that on my DS but I don't have an Atari deck anymore. Rats, because I do have the paddle controllers.

Nooooo, something else big was made in 1976.  And it wasn't a game either.

Oh. I saw King Kong in the theaters that year. I have a strong memory of it because it was the first theater movie I saw.

No it wasn't a game or a movie.  Although they should make a game or a movie about what I'm talking about that was concieved in 1976. :)

Darn, I'm stumped.

I should've known. You were just the right age when the NES came out. I guess that makes you a Nintendo kid for sure. I'm an Atari kid.

Oh I still remember the Atari days very well, though.  I guess I was playing games at an early age.  In fact, the reason why I didn't get a NES right away was because I was perfectly happy playing Pengo on my Atari 5200.

I've been using the age of 10 as the time to start gaming, but I know other people started earlier. I guess it was 10 for me because that's when the first really big home console came out with Atari. Before that it was just Pong and you can only get so much into pong. It's just too simple to get really crazy about.

I first played Pac-Man when I was five.

I played home pong at that age. I'm not wearing a pong t-shirt now though. I'd rather have an Atari Adventure one. Or those Activision patches, especially the one for Stampede.

That sounds like a solid plan about getting one game and one console per year. No rush on playing through the game and if you do decide on getting another game you can wait a bit and it will go on sale.

Slot cars, I always wanted a slot car set. My folks never got me one, but I did get a GI Joe train set which was my other must have thing as a kid.

I thought about getting a Wii-U the other day with my trade in money. I had about enough for one. I didn't want to blow it all in one place though. This might be the last game money I have for a while.
