Etrian Odyssey V demo

Had some time to wait while my roommate got ready for a day out. Turned out to be quite a while and I got a lot of time in with Etrian Odyessy V demo.

This is more of the same from this series which is great, because I love the formula they've devised for this first-person, turn-based dungeon crawl. I really love drawing the map on the lower screen. Some people would just like it to be an automap, but I love drawing it all in. It's another level of participation that harkens back to the first generation of computer rpgs when we had to pull out the graph paper and draw the dungeons or be lost in them.

I love the U.I. in this game too. The design is very appealing and super intuitive to navigate. Not too simple, not too complex. It's perfect.

What' different? Not sure. So far it's been pretty much the same as the Untold remakes of ETO I and II I played recently. I didn't notice a story mode though, just two difficulty levels, the easier one allowing you to restart a party that gets wiped out just once. Another thing that may be different, I caught a chicken and brought it back to the Inn where it will be kept and give me eggs for when I start to cook meals to give me boosts. Oh yea, and there are challenges just navigating the labyrinth that give you XP. I think that's new.

If this game was out now (not 'til Oct 17), I would trade this Hey Pikmin game in in a heartbeat to get it. It's my ideal handheld game to play.

How long is the demo? I think the chicken idea is good. In the originals you had limited gathering windows so I guess this makes it easier for harvesting. Interesting.

You can play up to level 10. I'm at level 6 or so. I wonder what I can do at level 10. Maybe I can still discover more maps and gather resources. I'm sure I can transfer my save to the full game, when I get it. And I will get it.

I forgot to mention the group abilities. I think it's new, but maybe not, it's been a while. Each character has different skills for group buffs or attacks. You can do them at the beginning of a battle and buff everyone up and still attack normally. They have to build up again over time though, so you can't use them every encounter.

Thanks for the post! Thats why I love my pixlbit! I wouldnt have known about that demo, and its totally rad!!! What does it mean that your party wipes? Does this game have permadeath? It explained this but vaguely and I don't know what it means? I don't remember permadeath being apart of EO? Have you played earlier ones? I played IV on 3DS prior, but don't remember this?

I think on the higher difficulty there is permadeth if your whole party dies (maybe get a game over screen), and you get one party revive on normal mode. So far I've had individual characters get knocked out, but I can revive them, or take them back to the Inn and revive them, no problem. They just miss out on some XP while they're out.

I've played drips and drabs of all the Etrian Odyessy games. I never get quite enough time to play portable games in general and these games take a lot of time to complete.

dude, I tried to download the demo for Monster Hunter and my SD card couldn't handle it. Gonna try Etrian later though.  Goddamn!

So far, I haven't filled it up yet. I've bought some games and a bunch of demos too like Monster Hunter Stories. Not like the Vita. Maxed that out after the first download, darn it.
